At the first sign of sunlight the following morning, Damon stepped outside for some fresh air and a chance to survey their environment in case there was a surprise waiting for them.

Pascal joined him a few moments later, closing the creaky cottage door as carefully as he could manage without waking any of the two sleeping women. Despite the few hours that had passed, it was clear that he hadn't gotten any sleep…he looked like the definition of exhausted.

“Morning,” Pascal muttered.

Damon nodded to him. He didn’t bother pretending he had slept…Pascal hadn’t either. Neither of them had wanted to. Losing Leo had taken something out of all of them, but for Damon and Pascal…the fighters, the protectors…it left a guilt that wasn't just going to fade overnight.

Pascal leaned back against a beam. “So… what’s your plan now? Because staying in the woods is suicide. VORTEX will try to track any survivors, and Elias is too insane to let this go. Especially with those monstr

No one spoke as they lifted Leo’s body into the back of the truck again. Not a word. Not a sound.Elena climbed in last after the others had all gone in. She touched Leo’s arm one more time…gentle, reverent…and then shut the door without looking at anyone.Damon swallowed the ache that was rising in his throat. He wanted to look at her. To say something. Anything. But the stiffness in her shoulders, the deadened cold in her eyes, warned him to stay silent.Pascal took the passenger seat. Mara lay groaning in the back, resting her head on a bundle of jackets. Elena sat beside her, but she didn’t speak. Didn’t move. She just stared at Leo’s body as if she was memorizing every inch of him before it was gone forever. The drive to the old cottage was slow, somber, weighed down by too much grief and too little hope. The forest closed in around them, with the branches arching overhead like a tunnel

The armored truck finally came to a halt after more than an hour of nonstop driving, with its overheated engine rattling like it was about to collapse at any moment. Damon turned off the ignition and slumped forward, breathing heavily as sweat and blood dried in patches across his shirt and body. No one spoke. No one even breathed too loud. There was total silence inside the metal shell, and grief seemed to overwhelm any exhaustion that they were supposed to be feeling.Pascal was the first to move. He pushed the back doors open with an angry snarl, stumbling out onto the dirt. The night air was still very chilly, but it did nothing to clear the pounding in his head. Mara followed him, clutching her side where deep claw marks and her bullet wounds were still oozing. Her steps were unsteady, but her eyes were glued to the tree line.Because Elena was there…She had followed them the entire way…not slowing down for once, or even allowin

Nobody had noticed when the unconscious Elena sat up. They had been too caught up in the fight to even catch her gasp of surprise, and she had slowly watched it all. Her heart lurched in terror and anguish as she realized what had happened. She tried to rise, to shout, and to intervene, but her body was still too weak and trembling from the previous torture and sedatives that still lingered in her system.Elias, standing back, raised his hands in dramatic triumph, laughing as he watched Leo crumble to the ground. “Do you see now?” he bellowed. “Do you see the cost of your stubborn loyalty? The cost of your love? Nothing you do can stop what I have created! These are perfection incarnate, and your precious pack…your precious Black Wolf…” His voice roared with madness. “Gone! All gone!”But then Elena had seen it all…The Abomination stabbing through Leo. Leo who had jumped in to save Damon.

Elias threw back his head and laughed, a wild, unhinged sound that vibrated across the compound and cut through the lingering smoke and carnage. The sound was inhuman in its malice, cold and triumphant despite everything looking as if he had lost the battle.“You really thought this was the end?” he barked at them, his voice filled with unhinged madness. “Did you think I had nothing left?” He tossed his gun aside carelessly, letting it clatter against the ground. Then, with a surprising calmness considering his earlier antics, he pulled a small radio receiver from his pocket and pressed it to his lips.Damon snarled, baring his teeth as his body tensed, ready for whatever madness Elias was about to unleash. Pascal shifted slightly, keeping one eye on the chaos surrounding them while Mara, still weak and bloodied, gritted her teeth beside him.“I planned for this,” Elias continued, moving with theatrical elegance

Elias didn’t stop laughing. His mad voice swept across the compound…shrill, gloating, and deranged…cutting through the choking smell of blood and smoke that still lingered in the air.“You three look too exhausted,” he mocked, pacing in front of them with delight. “Bleeding. Barely standing. And hopelessly outnumbered. Fighting now would be pointless, wouldn’t it?”Damon’s chest expanded with a low but savage growl. Pascal stayed protectively beside Mara, whose breaths were still thin and ragged. Elena lay unconscious on the ground between them, with her body still trembling weakly from Elias’s experiments.Elias waved a hand toward his reinforcements. Capture them alive,” he ordered with theatrical flourish. “Our new test subjects are ready, and these ones are bound to be…exceptional.”The circle tightened, and weapons were pointed even more dramatically.
