Chapter 3
. . . Lina A lump formed in my throat as I checked the contents of the letter. “We have been expecting you.” It was boldly written in red ink. Expecting me? Was this some kind of prank for new students? Or did I already start off with an enemy? “This isn't funny,” I muttered under my breath, turning the paper again. “Hey you okay?” Janna said softly, catching the look on my face. I nodded even though I wasn't sure. I took in a few deep breaths and a sweet scent flooded into my nostrils. It came from the paper I was holding. It was even perfumed? How ridiculous. Before I could process more, Janna cut through my thoughts. “So weird,” Janna mumbled. “I asked to room with my best friend this semester, but they said the space was reserved for someone important.” “Important?” I raised a brow. “Their word, not mine.” She smiled. “But I think it's you, since you came in mid semester.” Me? Does the school know something about this letter? And more importantly, why was I in the middle of all this? I stared again at the words like they might change. They didn't. Who the hell put this under my pillow? I shoved the letter into my drawer and continued unpacking. I turned towards Janna's side of the room. She was gone– probably went back to training. I peeked into the hallway and headed to the room across from ours. A girl with short black hair opened with a crack when I knocked. “Hey… uh, weird question,” I said. “Did you see anyone near our room earlier?” She blinked. “No?” Her tone made it sound more like a question than an answer. “Are you sure? Like nobody walked in or stood around–” “I said no,” she cut in, looking behind her like she was in a rush. Then she closed the door. Okay. That was weird. I went back to my room and sat on the edge of the bed. “Why now?” I blurted, rubbing my forehead. The knock at the door made me jolt. I stood and cracked it open. No one. Just an empty hallway. I checked both ends. Not even a soul. When I closed the door again, my heart was racing. ******* Later in the evening, I headed to shared bathrooms to clear my head. The showers were quiet – a couple of girls talking at a far end, steam curling around the mirror. I brushed my teeth slowly, keeping my eyes on the reflection. Nothing behind me. Nothing close up. But I heard it. Little whispers. It was too faint to catch a word but one thing I knew for sure? I wasn't hallucinating. I turned sharply and found no one. Just one running shower someone forgot to turn off. I sighed. Could my day get any worse? I backed out of the bathroom and walked straight back to the dorm without looking behind me. I got back to the dorm and I noticed that Janna wasn't still back from her training. She was probably a senior because no way we were in same class. I got into bed and had a quick call from my mom. The rest of the night dragged. I tried to sleep, but I was paying attention to the tiniest details which made me sit up. Eventually, I gave up and got ready early. The halls were dim when I left the room. Janna was coming in as I was leaving, yawning and waving lazily. “You are up early.” “Yeah, I couldn't sleep.” “Tell me about it.” She flopped onto her bed, face first. “Training is killing me.” “Well that sucks.” “Yeah, yeah. It was probably a first night thing. You will get used to it sooner or later.” She said. I almost asked her about the note – if she had seen someone come in earlier or something weird – but something stopped me. The way she looked so normal, unbothered. I didn't want to sound crazy. So I let go. The hallway buzzed as I walked down towards my first class. Everyone looked relaxed. People talking about schedules, who got paired with who. While some were laughing loudly. I tried to clear my head and focus but I couldn't. As I reached the door, voices drifted out. I could already hear Brienna's laugh. I hesitated. Then I stepped in.Chapter 8...LinaI realized the curtains had been down since the very day I got here. Despite the weather it was always down. I hadn't really taken note of it before because I liked cool rooms anyways, but the heat today was killing at the moment so my eyes wandered towards the fabric.Janna's bed position was in a weird position too. It was horizontal to the window. I rubbed my hand against my forehand. I must be overthinking things. She probably didn't like much sunlight like me or she gets migraines or something. I sighed, picked up the remote and turned on the air conditioner. While it hummed to life, I went through the messages on my phone. There was a missed call from my mom, so I called her back and we spoke for a while.I sat upright and unclasped my necklace, placing it on the drawer. My eyes lingered to my wrist where Darien had caught earlier and I touched it unconsciously. Then my eyes wandered off to Janna's table and I saw a lilac case with a black crest which caug
Chapter 7...DarienWe got back to our room after parting ways with Lina and Janna in the hallway. I walked to the table where there was a jug filled with water and drank a glass of water before heading to the couch. I sank onto it, exhaling deeply as I covered my face with my palm. I pulled out my phone from my pocket and continued with the game I was playing earlier on. I wasn't even half way to the level when Kai sat beside me and slung an arm over the back of my shoulders.“Easy white chocolate, I'm tryna clear this level before time runs out.” I said shifting slightly, just enough to shrug Kaiza’s arm off.“My battery is flat right now, so I've got nothing to do.” He said, slouching on the chair. I didn't respond to him.“So tell me, you were last seen with Lina before passing out. Mind sharing what you both were talking about?” He said grinning.” “If you're that bored, come help me out and take out the trash or vacuum the floor.” Blake cut in.I paused my game and turned
Chapter 6...Lina I blinked hard, trying to get a picture of where I was and for a second, I thought I saw four angelic figures hovering over me. There were muffled noises nearby and the scrapes of a chair leg. Ha. Then again, luck and I had always been polar opposites, it turned out to be the four guys who somehow always managed to mess with my peace. “She's waking up.” Someone said, low and cautious. My eyes fluttered open, and the infirmary ceiling welcomed me first. I winced, trying to sit upright, then I saw the four of them, each wearing a different expression. Azrael looked like he was forced to be here, he was the furthest from me. Kaiza leaned against the foot of the bed, with his diamond necklace glinting over his half unbuttoned shirt, while Blake was by the window, his hands in his pocket, staring out like he didn't want to look at me and Darien sat near the bed, his arm crossed tightly over his chest. “Our little princess is up,” Kaiza said causally, with his ey
Chapter 5...LinaA low, guttural growl sliced through the silence. My spine snapped straight. Then the door slammed shut behind me, locking me in with them.Four shadows stood in the center of the room. No, not shadows–boys. Huge, shirtless, furious boys, bodies coiled with tension. Their eyes glowed red. All of them. One of them–Azrael, I could recognize him–took a step forward, his hands clenched. His pupils weren’t just red; they were feral.“What did you do?” Kaiza’s voice was sharp, and somewhere beneath it, a snarl twisted the air.“I–” I backed away. My heel hit the edge of the stone step behind me. “I didn’t mean to-”The room suddenly felt chilly and Blake was suddenly in front of me.He didn’t touch me, he just scanned me. His gaze flicked from my face to my throat to my chest, like he was looking for something invisible. I was extremely tense with how up close he was. Then he cursed under his breath. “She stepped on the line.”“Uhm, what line?” I snapped. My heart was t
Chapter 4...Lina My stomach twisted when I got in. The class seemed bitter-sweet. Some looked infuriated, staring at their phone, while some were chatting with their friends. It somewhat made me less tense. There she was.Brienna.Sitting near the middle, a leg crossed over the other, notebook open, pen spinning in her fingers. She looked up as I entered. Her lips twitched into a slow, knowing smirk.I dropped into the seat farthest from her and opened my textbook, but I could swear anyone who took a good look at me knew I wasn’t reading.I could feel her watching me.Like she knew. And that smile? She wanted me to know she knew.“Linaaaa.” Brienna called. My heart raced fast as I turned to look at her.“Hey girly.” I said with an awkward smile.“New seat position?” She asked, tilting her head. “Nah, I just wanna crash here for a while.” I replied.“You're always crashing in the wrong seat.” She said, chuckling. Before I could reply, I picked up an enchanting fragrance. I knew
