Fresh air

“Come in.”

That voice sent chills down my spine. I reached out for the door handle and twisted it. The desk where the CEO’s assistant sat was empty so I proceeded to the main which was on the other side of the white screen. I stood outside the white glass door and waited for more instructions, wondering if Zane could see my outline.

“What are you waiting for?” He asked.

I pushed the door and stepped inside. My body was shaking and I could feel sweat pooling all over my body.

Zane looked up and observed me with his sharp green eyes. I looked down because I couldn’t maintain the stare.

“I’m very sorry for what I did yesterday,” I said.

“What did you do?” he asked.

“I did not respond to your greeting,” I said. “My mind was elsewhere.”

“How nice of your mind, to turn off when you’re meeting the new CEO of the company,” his tone was cold, like ice.

“I’m truly sorry.”

“You do not look like an insolent person, but then again people are not always as they seem. You’re teaching me that. Is that all your sorry about?”

I looked up. “Isn’t that why you called me here.”

“Since you seem to know more about why I called you here than I do, then tell us. Why did I call you here?”

It seemed Zane Carrington had taken an instant dislike to me and there was not much I could do to change his mind. I wanted to give a curt reply, but I managed to restrain myself. It took a lot but at the end of the day, I needed the job. Besides, that was the only job I had had since graduating from college. If I failed to get a good recommendation from the company, it would be hard for me to be accepted by another company.

“I’m sorry for making assumptions.”

“Is that all your sorry about?” he asked.

“I’m sorry for every bad thing I’ve done since you arrived at this company.”

Zane Carrington frowned before standing up. “Does that include your tardiness today?”

Sh!t. I had forgotten about that part. “I’m sorry for coming late to this meeting.”

Zane stood up and came to where I was standing. My heart was pounding so hard and fast I was afraid it would soon pop out of my chest. He continued until his tall and hard muscled body was only inches away from mine. I could almost feel his body and the scent of his manly perfume filed the air. It was so nice that I wanted to breathe it in forever.

I looked up in shock when I felt Zane’s hand touching my left jawline. My eyes met his. His gaze was intense, so intense that his eyes seemed magnetic. He looked more handsome and sexy up close. His lips looked like they were begging to kiss, and if he wasn’t my boss, I’d have been tempted to do it. My mind was screaming for me to look elsewhere but I failed to tear my eyes away from his. His hand on my chin was sending shockwaves throughout my body. I could feel a certain part of my body heating up and emitting sweet sensations.

“Maya Bennett,” he said, finally knocking me out of my trance. He removed his hand from my jawline. A part of me felt disappointed. It had felt so good. “I don’t like disrespectful and irresponsible employees. I don’t know how Mr. Milner treated his employees, but I don’t care because I’m not him. I heard that he treated like his own daughter. Maybe that’s why you’re not very careful with your behaviour. You think you’ll always be favoured. I have bad news for you. Things around here are about to change. You better change before you are changed.”

I nodded, although I was not in the right frame of mind. Being around the man was making me feel so many things at once. I had never fallen in love at first sight and did not believe in. but, they say, there’s a first time for everything. Is this it, I asked myself. No, no, Zane was beyond my league. As if he could even think of me that way. To him, I was just another irresponsible employee who was used to being spoon fed by the former CEO.

“All those things will never happen again, Mr. Carrington.”

“What if they do?”

“Appropriate punishment should be given.”

Zane nodded. “Good. Now that you know how things work, you can go.”

“Thank you for understanding, Mr. Carrington.”

“Look at me when you’re speaking to me.”

I looked up into his beautiful eyes. “Thank you, Mr. Carrington.”

When I was finally out of that office, i took a deep breath and released all the tension that had built up while I was inside my boss’ office. The man was definitely a strange one and knew very little about work ethics.

He had touched me yet he was not supposed to. But, damn, it had felt good. I could not deny that I had enjoyed it and wanted more.

The new CEO was a breath of fresh air in the company. Ever since I started working at Milner’s insurance, the two top positions in Milner had been occupied by old men. Now there was a hot young man. I had a feeling that we would soon start seeing more drama in the company. I was pretty sure every single woman in the building felt some sort of attraction. Not only was he handsome and masculine. He was so damn rich.

Getting into the elevator, I leaned on the side and closed my eyes, then smiled. I had gone to Zane’s office, thinking I would get fired or something but things had gone better than I expected.

There was only one thing that was scaring me. Being near that man had made me feel horny as hell, and there was no one to scratch the itch. I hurried to my office, grabbed a cold bottle of water from the fridge and closed the door.

After drinking it all, I felt better.

Something was wrong. I had the lowest sex drive and had never felt that strongly for someone I’d just met.

No, no, I couldn’t be falling for the one man I was sure I couldn’t have.
