The plaque on the office door read Internship Coordinator, but it might as well have said Executioner. My heart thudded so hard I could feel it in my teeth, and sweat clung to my back despite the icy blast of the air conditioners everywhere.

I wasn’t the type to flinch from fear, especially not after everything I’d survived, but being fired on my first day would be a fresh kind of humiliation. And I wasn’t ready to deal with it yet.

Still, none of it compared to the time I spent in the elevator. Out of all the people in this god-forsaken city, I had to get stuck in a tiny metal box with Dominic freaking Bloodhound.

I still couldn’t get his scent out of my mind. Not surprisingly, it still had the same paralyzing effect on me it always did. The universe was playing a terribly cruel joke on me, but I was just happy to be out of that elevator.

I drew in a slow breath, straightened the crooked hem of my blazer, and knocked on the door.
