“I was tired,” Maera said coldly. “The war has a way of draining one’s appetite for festivities.”

“Tired? Or simply disinterested?” another Elder chimed in, chuckling. “I’ve heard the kitchen staff placing bets. Some say you have a heart of stone. Others say… well, others say you’re looking for something a bit more ‘sturdy’ than a lady’s silk skirts.”

The room erupted into low, masculine chuckles. Maera hated that it was crude, aggressive, and pointed.

“Is that so?” Maera asked, her voice dropp

Maera turned to Theron. "I am going to the armory " she said."Can you ride a horse?" Theron asked her. He looked at her stomach, his eyes showing a flash of worry."I have to " Maera said. She walked out of the hall, her pace was quick even though her ribs hurt. She made her way to the level of the fort where the soldiers were busy checking their gear."Yule!" she called out. He was probably here somewhere.Yule appeared from behind a rack of spears. He was holding her sword and a clean cloak. His face looked uneasy. He did not say anything about her injury. He had seen Lady Ravvyne follow her into the room and put two and two together. He knew there was no point in arguing."Help me with the vest " Maera said.Yule stepped behind her. He pulled the leather straps of her vest until they were tight. Maera bit her lip to keep from groaning as the leather pressed against her bruised skin. He buckled the plates over her chest and shoulders."Your horse is ready Commander " Yule said. He

Ravvyne stared at her for a long second, then nodded. She reached for the leather vest and started to pull the straps tight, her face set in a grim line.“Hurry on then. I shall join you later, I need to find oht some things,” lady Ravvyne said. The bells were still ringing when Maera reached the center of the hallway. She ignored the fire in her ribs and walked right up to Theron. He was surrounded by guards, his face looking dark and angry.“What exactly is going on?” she asked, stopping him in his tracks. “They shouldn’t have come to attack so quickly.”Theron turned around quickly. He looked at her with a mix of surprise and worry. “You should be in your room, Cael.”“Answer me,” she said, her voice sounding even. “The Council, Alpha,” another messenger gasped as he ran uo to the rwo of them. He leaned his back against the stone wall. “The scouts heard the enemy shouting from across the river. They are laughing. They say the Crescent Moon Pack sent a letter two days ago begging

“Rav was crying, Theron! I walked in and she was on the floor, looking like her heart had been ripped out or maybe she had been hit,” Colin yelled, his voice echoing off the stone walls. “What was I supposed to do? I saw him standing there and I just let go. I punched him in the stomach.”“You hit an unarmed man?” Theron roared. He grabbed Colin by the collar of his robe and shoved him back against a pillar. “You used your strength on my Commander because a woman was crying?”“I thought he hurt her!” Colin shouted back, trying to pry Theron’s hands off him. He hasn’t expected Theron to be that protectuge of the commander. “You’re a fool!” Theron spat. He let go of Colin with a shove. “He is a soldier under my command. If you have a problem with him, you come to me. You don’t lay a hand on him!”Colin rolled his eyes. “How badly is he hurt!” Theron seethed. “Well…”“Well what?”“He started coughing up blood, Theron,” Colin said, his voice dropping. He looked a bit shaken. “I didn't

“Can you sit?” Ravvyne asked, reaching out to catch Maera’s elbow as she stumbled.“I think so,” Maera wheezed. She leaned her shoulder against the wall, her face looking pale in the dim light of the hallway. Every breath she took was extremely painful. She gripped her stomach, trying to hold it inside. Normally, she didn’t feel much becayse she had extra layers of protection covering her ribs, but today when her guard has been let down, Colin had punched her out of the blue. She wondered if there was anything between Ravvyne and Colin that he was so protective, but then she brushed it away. They didn’t seem like lovers— especially with Ravvyne pining after her dead brother. Maybe Colin saw her like a younger sister. Ravvyne looked around to make sure the hallway was empty. “Just a few more steps.”They moved slowly toward the commander’s quarters. Maera’s boots made a dull dragging sound on the floor. She kept her head down, her jaw clenched tight to keep from groaning. She was th

The word came out from both Maera and Ravvyne at the exact same time. It was filled with a frantic energy that made Colin freeze. He looked at the two of them, his eyes narrowing as he took in the way they were huddled together.“I’m fine,” Maera added in her deep, strained voice, clutching her ribs. She tried to steady her breathing, but the pain in her chest was like a hot iron. “It’s just a bruise. I don’t need a healer poking around my chest.”“And I can look after him,” Ravvyne said quickly, wiping her face with a trembling hand. “I have… I have medicine in my travel bags. There is no need for a scene, Colin. Truly.”Colin slowly withdrew his hand. He looked between Ravvyne’s tear-stained face and the Commander’s pale one. The story about the dead sister seemed plausible—death was common enough in these times—but the way they were acting now? It felt like they were guarding a castle under siege.“Right. Medicine in your bags,” Colin repeated, his tone dry. “If you say so.”He sto

“What?” Her voice came oht as a strained whisper, her eyes becoming glossy with unshed tears. “What do you mean… you… you’re.” “I am not Cael. I have only assumed his position— as his twin,” stated Maera swallowing hard. “Twin sister. He died five years ago.” “Oh goddess,” Ravvyne moaned, the tests spilling down her cheeks in torrents. She sank onto the floor, ger dress gathered around her as she wailed into them. “No, it can be… Cael? I…” Maera stood there awkwardly, staring at her and not sure how to comfort her. She wasn’t sure if Ravvyne was going to appreciate a hug, or if she was the type to want to be left alone in grief. The door swung open just then without a knock, revealing Colin. “Hey, Rav— what in the world did you do to her?” The sentence ended with a harsh punch to Maera’s abdomen. Her eyes widened in shock as she reeled back from the force— it shoukd have felt like nothing. Only this time around she wasn’t wearing any protective armor. The wrap she had was on he
