Chapter 23: Going Back

Daphne wasn’t the only one worried. I was, too. I wouldn’t lie about it. The things she had warned me about troubled me, and we drove back to my place in silence.

“How are you feeling?” I asked as we neared my home.

I reached out and took her hand, and she turned to me.

“Still nervous.”

“That’s okay. I am too,” I admitted.

She smiled a little and squeezed my hand. I parked in front of the house, and we both got out before I gathered our things. There wasn’t much. I hadn’t packed extensively. I extended my free hand to Daphne, and she took it as we walked toward the house.

Once inside, I heard hurried footsteps approaching. It wasn’t long before my parents arrived, their expressions serious.

“Jackson!” my mother yelled.

“This is going to be good,” I mumbled under my breath.

My parents stopped in front of me, glaring, but then they noticed Daphne and their expressions shifted to confusion.
