Kael POV

The morning air was sharp, filled with the chill of pine and smoke from the hearths scattered through the pack’s grounds. My warriors were already up, sparring in the yard, but I didn’t join them. My thoughts were elsewhere.

Elara.

Her name was like a pulse in my blood. Every step I took, every breath I drew, she was there.

Ronan’s warnings still echoed in my head. Two weeks. The wedding. The pack.

But I couldn’t.

No Alpha could ever forget his true mate.

And so, when the sun broke over the trees, I made my choice.

I left the packlands behind and headed toward the human town.

The dirt road wound through the forest, familiar to me now. I had passed this way before, watching the human world from the shadows. But this time, I didn’t linger at the edge.

This time, I walked straight into the heart of it.

The town was alive with noise—merchants calling out their prices, children chasing each other through the streets, blacksmiths hammering iron. The air smelled of bread, sweat, a

  • The Alpha’s Forbidden Mate   Chapter 33: The Wound and the Scent

Kael POVThe sting of the blade still burned in my arm, a sharp reminder of how reckless I had been. I clenched my jaw and forced myself forward, pushing through the narrow alley that led away from the tavern where the fight had broken out. My boots crunched over gravel, each step heavy, each breath uneven. The scent of my own blood filled my nose—iron and heat. It was faint to the humans who had stumbled away from me in fear, but to my wolf, it was deafening. Every nerve in my body screamed at me to shift, to heal faster, to unleash the beast that lived beneath my skin. But I couldn’t. Not here. Not in their town.If even a hint of my wolf slipped out, it would undo everything. Generations of careful separation between our world and theirs would crumble, and worse—it would put her in danger.Elara.Her name whispered in the back of my mind, unbidden. She was the reason I had even stepped foot here again, despite knowing the risks. The pull between us had been impossible to ignore, a

  • The Alpha’s Forbidden Mate   Chapter 32: The Girl in the Woods

Lyra’s POVThe woods had always been mine. Not by choice—though sometimes I pretended it was—but by birthright. Every twisting path, every fallen log, every stretch of shadowed undergrowth belonged to my bloodline. I knew where the earth dipped into hollows, where the moss grew thicker over stones, where the silence meant danger and where it meant peace. But this day, standing in the clearing, I realized there was something I did not know.Someone.Her.She looked as though she had stepped into the wrong story, as though fate had plucked her out of her world and shoved her into mine. Her hair caught the light between the branches, her eyes wide with fear, and for the first time in longer than I could remember, I hesitated.I should have spoken.I should have demanded to know her name, her reason for being here, her ties to my woods. But I didn’t. I only watched her, and in watching her, I felt something inside me stir.Recognition.The same recognition that had haunted my dreams. The

Her eyes didn’t leave mine.I had never seen eyes like that before—dark, almost black, but catching the dying light in a way that made them glint like steel. There was power in them, though she wasn’t doing anything. Just standing there. Watching me.A shiver ran down my spine. For a moment, I thought she might step forward, that she might introduce herself, maybe even ask me what I was doing in the woods. But she didn’t. She simply stood there, still as a statue, her cloak shifting only slightly in the breeze. And I couldn’t move either.Something in me told me not to turn away, not to show weakness, even though my heart was racing so loudly I was sure she could hear it. It felt like we were locked in some silent contest, a battle fought not with words but with stares.Who was she?She didn’t belong here. That much was certain. Her clothes were too fine, her presence too commanding. She looked like someone who walked through halls of power, not through tangled forest paths. And yet h

The forest was too quiet. That was the first thing I noticed when I stepped deeper inside. No birds, no rustling of small animals—just the whisper of the wind through the trees, like the woods themselves were holding their breath. I should have taken it as a sign to leave. But I didn’t.I couldn’t.Here I was again, standing in the very place I’d last seen Kael, hoping—no, aching—for another chance to see him.But he didn’t come.I tried to tell myself it didn’t matter. He was a stranger. A man who belonged to the woods, Our few words, the bond I feel, should have been nothing. And yet I carried them in my heart like treasure. The way his eyes had found mine, as if I was the only one who had ever existed. I pressed my palm against my chest, as though I could calm the storm raging inside me. “Foolish,” I muttered under my breath. “You’re foolish for feeling this way for a stranger.”But still I stayed. The trees were familiar now, their shapes etched in my mind from the countless time

“Come on, Elara, you’re walking like an old woman,” Mira teased as we left school, her braid bouncing behind her as she skipped ahead.I tried to smile, but something in me was restless. Too restless. The air was different today. Too sharp. Too alive. My senses had been tormenting me all morning—every scratch of chalk, every whispered word, every breath of perfume magnified until I thought I’d lose my mind. But this… this was worse. It started faint, drifting through the breeze like smoke. Then it swelled, heavy and wild, pressing against me until my chest ached.A scent. Familiar. My feet faltered.“Elara?” Mira turned, frowning. “What’s wrong now?”I didn’t answer. My lungs expanded greedily, pulling the air in deeper, trying to capture it, hold it.It was the same. The same pull I’d felt before, that day in the woods when I saw him.Kael.I hadn’t spoken his name aloud, not even once, but his image burned in me every night. The fire in his eyes. The way my body had ached to move to
