(Rowan's POV)

Elira lay there as if she owned the air we stood in, her hands crossed in front of her as if she'd come to deliver some pronouncement from on high.

The light streaming through the windows fell on the silver threads in her dark hair, putting lines on her face older than her years or maybe it was seriousness of what she was to bestow upon me.

"Well?" I pressed, fighting hard not to see my own patience fray. I'd had more than enough of this sort of veiled threat and broad warning in a single day.

Her smile was slow, measured, the sort of smile that caused my skin to crawl. It was the sort of face one would not reserve for delivering ill news-it was the face of a woman savoring a moment well practiced.

"You don't actually remember her, do you?" she said, tilting her head as if observing a highly inquisitive specimen.

I narrowed my eyes. "We have gone over this. Get on with it."

Her smile broadened, and I saw with growing unease that she was enjoying this. Whatever piece of n

(Calla’s POV)It was too quiet. Not the kind of quiet that came with peace, but the sort that set your teeth on edge. The kind that made you wonder what was being whispered behind closed doors while you stood out here, in the open, unarmed.I sat across from Asher in the small sitting room off the main hall, pretending to read the same page in the worn book on my lap for the fifth time. He didn’t press me about my distraction—Asher had always been good at reading the air in his own way. The fire between us snapped and hissed, its warmth failing to thaw the chill coiling inside me.Because I knew where Elira was.And who she was with.Rowan’s study door had shut a half hour ago. She’d gone in with that silken smile, that voice like honey hiding poison, and Rowan—gods help him—hadn’t told her to leave.I told myself I shouldn’t jump to conclusions, but I knew Elira’s games too well. I’d watched her do it to others: drip her words like a slow-acting toxin until they believed the lie she

  • The Alpha’s Forgotten Bride   Chapter 73: Which Side?

(Knox's POV)When I was instructed by Rowan to remove Calla and Asher from the great hall, I knew at once this was less of an attempted attempt at a simple dismissal. His jaw was too clenched, his voice too sharp and his eyes, even when he was stuck staring at Lena's pouting, would dart back to Calla like trying to engrave her presence in his mind."Asher," Rowan repeated, this time softer but more firmly."Take her with you."Calla didn't argue. She stood up, cradling the boy to her chest, and moved toward me. Her muscles were strong, but I could tell she was tense. This was not a typical woman… and the more I saw, the more the reality nibbled at the edge of my head. The walk along the hallways was longer than usual. Pack members we encountered seemed to realize that something was not right, conversation halted, eyes following our small group with inquisitive scrutiny. Some nodded respectfully at me, some looked at me warily and some even questioned Calla. Rumors spread quickly in a

  • The Alpha’s Forgotten Bride   Chapter 71: Spill it!

(Rowan’s POV)The tension in the hall was alive, moving through the air and wrapping around every heartbeat. I could still hear the soft sounds of the elders talking, the quiet words that came after Calla took off her mask. Their voices buzzed like mad bees, each word sharp and cutting.I had enough."This meeting is over," I said, voice low but hard enough to cut. "We will meet again later."Sharp breaths came from around the hall. The elders did not like their big council meeting being stopped early, but no one spoke up. My word was final. It had to be. I could see the way they looked shocked, from the way they opened their mouths. Good. Let them remember who runs things here."Elira," I called, my eyes finding hers. "Come with me to my study."Her chin went up, eyes bright like she had been waiting for this. She stood up smooth and easy, head high. Always looked perfect and in control, but I knew better. There was heat in the way she held herself, and it was not all anger. There wa

(Rowan’s POV)The air between them felt like electric, it was sharp enough to cut skin.Calla stood there with her chin up, her cold eyes, and her body that was stiff like ice. She looked as if she owned the room, like she had never been anywhere she did not belong. Elira was the opposite. She was pure fire. She stared at Calla with her angry look las if she wanted to burn a hole through her. Her hands were placed by her sides, and I could see how her chest was moving up and down with each mad breath."I should have known," Elira said, her voice was quiet but filled with anger that meant trouble. "You always show up where you do not belong."Calla did not even blink. "And you always think that you own things that were never your own."Those words were deep and it hit like a punch. I saw how Elira went stiff. But there was something else too. Pain. Real pain hiding under all that anger. My jaw muscle jumped. I had seen fights before. Pack fights, land fights, personal stuff. But this w

  • The Alpha’s Forgotten Bride   Chapter 69: Smirk at Them

(Calla's POV)That silence that descended on the big hall when Rowan rose was stifling. It wasn't calm quietness of reflection or expectant stillness before happiness, it was stifling, heavy quietness before storms, the sort that left even the most battle-hardened wolves fidgeting in their seats and questioning whether they should make a run for it.I sat still and rigid, back straight as a knife and chin uplifted with the sort of pride I'd learned in decades of surviving courts a good deal more lethal than this one. My fingers traced slow over the darkness blue of my dress, silk worth more than most made in a month and which I'd consciously picked for this moment, for this discovery. Every detail had been considered, from the cut that highlighted me without being risqué, to the colour that would look best with my silver hair when the time finally came to reveal it.Asher's small hand rested in mine, his thumb rubbing back and forth across my palm with the kind of easy tranquillity t
