Caelan's POV

"She's my mate. Of course I believe she's worth it." I didn't hide the fierce protectiveness in my voice. "But beyond that, yes, I believe stopping the Shadow Council from continuing their killing campaign against ancient bloodlines is worth the risk. I believe protecting the lost princess of Silverwood... the rightful heir to one of our oldest lineages... is worth fighting for."

"Pretty words," Marcus said. "But let's talk reality. If we help you and this goes badly, our packs could be decimated. Warriors killed, territories vulnerable to other threats. What do we get in return for that risk?"

I'd expected this. Marcus always thought in terms of transactions, advantages, what he could gain.

"Alliance. My pack stands with yours if you ever face threats you can't handle alone. We share intelligence networks, coordinate on regional security, support each other politically and militarily." I paused. "And if Aeliana survives, if she reclaims her position as Silverwoo

Caelan’s POVAn Arbiter stands inside our war tent. One second, the space in front of the map table is empty. The next second, it is occupied by the presence of an Arbiter with robes that keep changing color like oil on water. And where its face should be, there are only two black holes that hurt to look at.Every wolf in the room stops breathing. My wolf snarls inside my chest, claws out, ready to shift and fight. The entity inside me and Aeliana clamps down hard, like a hand on the back of my neck.Calm, it says in my head. This one is Observer-of-Consequence. It only watches. For now.Hands move toward knives. And feet slide into fighting stance. The three visiting Alphas step in front of their seconds without thinking. Even Marcus Silverstone’s fingers close around the grip of his pistol. The air feels thick, like trying to breathe syrup.“What the hell is that thing?” Marcus Silverstone asks. His voice shakes just a little.“I am an observer,” the Arbiter answers. The words come

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 122

Caelan’s POVFour days after the battle, the valley's life was starting to feel almost normal again. Pups chased each other through the grass. Someone was roasting meat over an open pit. The smell of pine smoke and fresh bread drifted on the breeze. Then the growl of engines ruined the quiet.Three separate convoys rolled in at the exact same minute, dust clouds rising like signal fires.Riverside Pack from the north road. Blackwood Pack from the east. Silverstone Pack from the west.Alpha Thomas, Alpha Sarah, and Alpha Marcus of Silverstone stepped out of their trucks almost in unison. They had clearly planned this joint arrival. No one drives six hours each way just to “drop by.”Aeliana and I were already waiting at the main gate with Liora and my Gamma Marcus on either side. The closer the trucks got, the heavier the air felt.“They’ve been talking,” Liora muttered. “A lot.”“No kidding,” I answered. The three Alphas walked forward together, their seconds and guards a respectful

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 121

Caelan's POV A commotion near the medical tent drew our attention. I felt Aeliana tense beside me as we both turned to look.Jolene emerged with a grave expression. She spotted us and headed over with purposeful strides, Theron trailing behind her looking equally serious."We need to talk," the witch said without preamble. "About what you've become and what it means.""Can it wait?" I asked. "We have wounded to tend, dead to bury....""No," Theron interrupted, and the wizard's usual scholarly demeanor had been replaced by something sharper. "It can't. Because what we've discovered in our research...Alpha, Luna, the dual vessel phenomenon isn't just unprecedented. It's prophesied."Aeliana and I exchanged glances. I can feel her wariness mirror my own."Prophesied how?" she asked carefully.Jolene pulled out a worn book, flipping to a marked page. "Ancient texts. Pre-dating most m

Caelan's POVThe sun was setting by the time I could finally stand still long enough to take stock of what we'd lost.We have seventeen dead. Thirty-two wounded. Twelve of those might not see the morning. The numbers sat in my chest like stones.I stood on what used to be our front line, my boots sunk in churned-up earth that still smelled of blood and burnt magic. Wolves moved around me in slow, quiet patterns: carrying the injured, wrapping the dead, and stacking broken weapons. No one spoke above a whisper. Even the wind seemed afraid to disturb the valley tonight. We had won. The Shadow Council was shattered, the Seekers were gone, and Annalise was in chains. But none of it felt like winning.Through the bond I could feel Aeliana the way I felt my own heartbeat: she is steady, exhausted, and aching. The Entity lived in both of us now, like a quiet third presence that tasted our grief and stayed politely silent."You should sit down," I sent to her, the thought sliding across

Third-Person POVShe brushed an invisible speck of dust from her sleeve.“They were so close to a breakthrough. A way to make our wolves immortal, to shield us from silver, from death itself. They just needed a little more power. What was needed was just a few more sacrifices. But the pack didn’t understand. Instead, they got scared and sent for help.”Her voice stayed dreamy, almost singsong.“Your parents came (the King and Queen, so noble, so certain they knew best). They arrived with soldiers and judgment in their eyes. My mother and father welcomed them. Offered tea. Explained everything. Begged them to see the vision.”Annalise’s smile turned sad, forgiving.“But your family doesn’t share, does it? They never have. They saw power they didn’t control and decided it had to be

  • The Alpha's Forgotten Mate   Chapter 118

Third-Person POVAnnalise stood alone on the broken ridge, wind whipping her dark hair across her face, as she watched the impossible happen in front of her.Caelan and Aeliana faced her together, shoulder to shoulder. With blood streaking on their skin and ash clinging to their clothes, between them danced a raw, living light (white-gold and beautiful). The Entity’s power moved back and forth from one body to the other like breath shared between lovers. Two hearts beating as one. Two vessels for a force that had never, in all recorded history, chosen more than a single host.Annalise felt her carefully built world tilt and slide toward ruin. She had spent so many years preparing for this day. Many years of deals made in the dark, of memories sold, and of nights spent with things that had no names, all so she could stand here and claim the Entity for herself. And now these two wolves (these stupid, noble,
