Hazel POV

Rolland sat on the porch steps like the weight of the world had just dropped on his shoulders. His elbows were on his knees, hands running through his hair over and over again like he could scrub away the memory of Blaine with a heavy pound.

I stood behind him, watching the sky shift. The clouds were heavy with unshed rain, and the scent of pine and wet bark hung low in the air. The wind brushed my cheeks, but I stayed still.

“You don’t have to say anything,” he murmured. “I know how

HAZEL’S POVThe kitchen smelled like cinnamon which was very, a stark contrast to the unease curling in my chest. Marta stood at the counter, humming softly as she rolled dough. She had her a apron flour dusting her hands.“Marta,” I said, sliding onto one of the stools.“Miss Hazel.” She glanced up briefly before returning to her work. “Can I get you something?”“No. Not at all. Your company here is enough.” I replied, watching her steady movements. I was really grateful to have her around. Though in her early sixties, her efficiency had to be studied. She was very coordinated whenever she handled chores and dishes. “Can I ask you something again? I've had it in my mind for a while now. I think it's time to let it out. What do you think?”Her shoulders stiffened just slightly and I could see her slow down her kneading pace. “of course, Mr. Hazel. Do.m ask your question right away. What is it that you'd like to ask me?”“Please,” I began careful with how I asked the question. I didn'

BLAINE’S POVThe call came just after midnight. I lay beside Hazel on the bed, lost in deep thought when my ringing tone tote through the silent room. I reached out quickly for it on the table, pressing it against by chest to reduce the volume while turning down the volume. I got out of bed and headed to my study. The study was dark and the only light came from a single lamp on my desk. Shadows stretched long across the walls, shifting faintly with every movement I made. I answered the call, placing it hastily on my ears.“What are tiy calling me by this time of the night? Huh? Can't it wait till tomorrow?’“You wanted an update. I have an urgent one boss. Sorry for the disturbance.” the voice said.“Alright. Go ahead.”“News reached me tonight that Roland is healing though it's dlower than expecte. He's stable nonetheless. The guard’s following your instructions in making sure he stays alive.”I leaned back in my chair, rubbing a hand along my jaw. “And his behavior? Noticed anything

ROLAND’S POVThe wound had reopened wider than I’d realized. I blamed myself squarely for letting Blaine rage bait me to the extent that I got so lost trying to get past my binder that the would on my shoulder reopened.Blood seeped steadily through the makeshift bandage wrapped around my shoulder, the fabric already dark and damp with blood. It's been tow hours now since Blaine left and no one had entered to check how I was doing. There was nothing, not even a piece of fabric around to contsin the bleeding. Heat pulsed beneath my skin within every slight movement I made, each throb sharp and insistent sending pain radiating down my arm.I rested my head against the bar, my body growing weak. Just when I shut my eyes to rest, I heard footsteps echoing fown the corridor. The door creaked open and the older guard stepped inside. He had a small kit tucked under his arm and had a very flat and unreadable Hexpression etched on his face as always.“Sit still,” he said, crouching in front

BLAINE’S POVThe study door was open when I arrived and seeing it open was enough to set to make it seem off. My study room wasn't off limits but I loved it non tampered with.I stepped inside quietly, my gaze sweeping the room. By the west wing stood Marta. She stood near a shelf dusting with a little too much for a room that never needed so much dusting “Marta.”She didn't know I had walked in and my voice startled her but she immediately composed herself, straightening a stack of files on the desk. “Good day, Alpha Blaine. I didn’t hear you come in.”“So I noticed.” My eyes moved across the room again, slower this time. It wasn't that I didn't trust Marta. I trusted her for the six years she had worked with me but sometimes, somethings just need extra surveillance. I stretched out my lips to a thin line.“Everything alright in here?”“Of course,” she said, going back to dusting the shelves beside her.I stepped further inside, one arm folded behind me.“You’ve been in here a lot

HAZEL’S POVA minute ago, I was asleep. The next, the soft chirping of birds pulled me back to consciousness. I yawned and stretched my arms in exhaustion as I sat up in the bed.The twins were already stirring in their bassinets by the time I opened my eyes. Luckily for me, they didn't disturb me throughout the night and they slept peacefully which gave me a piece. Blaine had left early again. He had actually told me about it during breakfast that he had some meetings he had to attend. mentioned after breakfast and had pressed a quick kiss to my forehead before disappearing down the stairs. Now that he was gone, I got up from the dining room, pushed myself up and made my way to the nursery. The nursery was in the northern wing of the palace and it was located here because it was closer to the valley. The moment I stepped inside, I found Elias already fussing, his tiny fists waving in frustration.“Good morning to you too,” I murmured, lifting him gently into my arms. The moment he

ROLAND'S POV"Where are my children," I said, the words scraping raw out of my throat. Those were the first thing that came in mind.Blaine tilted his head, mock consideration crossing his face. "Which question do you want answered first? There's so many to choose from.""Don't," I said, straining against the ropes despite the pain screaming through my shoulder. "Don't you dare stand there and play games with me.""I'm not playing any games with you, Roland," he said, stepping closer, his hands still tucked casually in his pockets. "I'm simply enjoying the view of you being bound and broken. This is exactly where you belong.""You faked your own death and you fuckin et your own parents bury an empty coffin and you let Hazel grieve you.""She needed to grieve," Blaine said, crouching down to my eye level. "Grief clears the mind wonderfully and makes room for new things to settle in.""You're sick.""Maybe." He shrugged, entirely too calm for a man discussing his own depravity. "But it
