Darkness had fallen slowly, taunting the pack as they shifted anxiously in the trees. I listened carefully for the pack link, waiting for Hudson, one of the warriors in my charge, to confirm we were ready to launch. He had climbed up to the roof of the asylum that was holding our Luna. He was responsible for releasing the gas that was supposed to knock out the humans so they wouldn't see us.
He was already taking longer than usual, and was either focusing, or he was just as quiet as a mouse. A frustrating, unresponsive fucking mouse.
'Hudson, report.' I ordered into the pack link, knowing we couldn't move without confirmation that his part of the plan was complete.
There was a moment of radio silence as I watched the building. My wolf was stirring, telling me that something was wrong and that I needed to get into the building. My enhanced sight immediately picked up the motion on the roof, and I growled lowly in my chest as the sight of two vampires fighting Hudson came into view.
'Hudson's been made! Move-in!' I snapped, knowing the pack could hear me. 'Send back up to the roof! Get that gas going ASAP! The rest, proceed as planned.'
We had all exits and entrances surrounded. Nothing was going to get out. Once we had our Luna, I would burn the damn place to the ground if I could, just to make sure that we didn't miss any fucking bloodsuckers.
I led the charge, my partner, Scarlett, next to me. Together we were an unstoppable force. Ironically, we were both ready to lay down our lives for the pack that had never been welcoming to us.
Everyone made mistakes, but ours involved mates.
That was the most sacred thing in the universe. No one messed with the concept of or the actual soulmate. She loved a man from afar and couldn't have him because he was mated with another. She didn't handle it the best way, but at least she put her heart out there and tried to make a move. She told him how she felt.
I gave my heart to that bitch, Kate, and she fucked my brother behind my back. When I returned home and found them together, I got angry and yelled at her in front of the pack. I became the villain in the situation for reacting that way to a mated pair. Meanwhile, the cheating twat, became the pack sweetheart. Everyone wanted to comfort her and support her new relationship, and they all turned their back on me in the process.
Scarlett was punished by having to work in the compost fields and was put on cleaning detail for disrespecting the Luna after making her intentions with the Alpha known. I was ostracized until I worked my way up to Head Warrior. Yet, we were always the first to risk ourselves for the sake of others.
The sound of the pack racing after me as I rushed through the front door gave me an extra boost of adrenaline, and I ripped the door open before moving inside. We knew it wouldn’t be as easy as barging in to save the Luna, but we had been hoping for minimal casualties. Unfortunately, that was something that vampires didn’t know how to do.
The front receptionist was being held up by a tall, slender man in a lab coat. His teeth were extended by her neck as if telling us that if we took a step further, he would drain her.
The problem was that he was already exposed his kind to her, so she was dead anyway. Either he killed her, we killed her, or the counsel would kill her. Scarlett rushed him, and he plunged his teeth into the human's neck before forcefully ripping her jugular from her body. Blood splattered from the violent action before Scarlett quickly eliminated the vampire.
I jumped forward, protecting her back as another leech rushed us, and the battle commenced.
All around me, more of his kind came rushing out surrounding us but not overpowering us as we continued to eliminate them in quick succession. I made easy work of them as they approached, only one managing to get their teeth into my arm for a second.
'East entrance clear, moving in.' The voice stated through the pack link, being muffled by the sound of fighting around me.
I could hear the growling of the Alpha as he grew more and more impatient outside. Normally, the Alpha would fight with us. However, in the situation where his mate's life was on the line, his judgment was compromised, resulting in him having to wait until the coast was clear before he could go in to get her.
The louder he got, told me that we didn't have much time left until he stormed inside to find his mate. I turned, the crowd thinning as my team finished off the last few of the coven who had charged through to meet us at the front entrance. Scarlett flicked the blood from her hand as she turned to face me. Having had been the closest to the hallway, she had taken the brunt of the damage. Lacerations and bite marks covered her skin, and I knew it would not take long for that amount of poison to take effect.
"Scar, out to the medic. Now!" She pursed her lips at me in anger before stomping out of the building. I did a quick glance around, motioning for two more to join her. The excessive bites could cause a lot of damage to our wolves and needed to be treated immediately when in large amounts.
'North entrance clear, moving in.' I released into the pack link, hearing the South and East reply with their status shortly after. As soon as confirmation was received that all entrances had been controlled, Alpha Gabriel burst through the front door. His pitch-black wolf and glowing red eyes would have been terrifying if I hadn't grown up with him. He wasted no time rushing down the hallway, my warriors chasing after him, eliminating any threat that dared to step forward.
Several human bodies were found throughout the compound, having been drained by vampires who presumably needed to heal after sustaining some type of injury during the fight.
A mouthwatering smell tickled my nose, and my wolf perked up, pushing me to shift so he could take control and find the source. One brown eye and one green eye flashed to my mind before I shook the thought free. As soon as we saved the Luna, I was going to go find my mystery woman, no matter the cost.
I rubbed my irritated nose as the smell was covered by the gas that had finally been released into the air vents. We didn't have long now until we needed to be out. It would impact the humans well before it started to affect our kind, but that didn't mean we weren't working on the clock.
Gabriel turned to a closed-door, slamming his body against it. I wanted to move forward and open it for him, but I knew better than to step between an angry Alpha and his mate. That was a death sentence.
The door crashed inward upon his last impact, and he stalked forward. The smell from before grew increasingly stronger, but I knew my duties. I needed to stand guard to make sure the coast was clear, until he got the Luna out.
'All clear,' rounded through my mind by several people, letting me know the compound had been swept. I let my stance relax slightly, but I kept my focus on the area around me just in case.
"I knew you would come for me," I heard Luna Olivia whisper, and I tried to focus on anything other than the glorious smell coming from the room. My wolf wanted me to burst in there and tear it apart until we found the source, but until Olivia was out, I had to stay on guard. "She needs to come with us. We need to keep her safe."
She? Of course, there was someone else in the room.
Gabriel came walking out silently a moment later, jerking his head into the room as he spoke into my mind, 'grab the girl.'
He brushed by me carefully, with Olivia laying limp in his arms, flanked on both sides by warriors. I waited until she was a few steps away before turning and rushing into the room. I could hear them breathing, but could not see them until I stepped forward.
There, lying face down on the ground between the beds, was the most glorious creature to ever have been put on this Earth.
I fell down to my knees, carefully turning her over in my arms. Her short brown hair barely touched her shoulders, and I knew if she were to open her eyes right now, I would see the same pair that had been haunting my dreams for the past few days. Her beautiful lips had a split along the bottom one with blood dripping from her nose, presumably from the fall due to the gas. I held her body close to mine, savoring the feeling of her warmth. The smell of the gas grew stronger the longer I sat there holding her, not realizing how long I had been staring at the angel in my arms until I was called for through the pack link. We had to get out, we had been in too long, and the gas was going to start affecting me. I got to my feet, stumbling slightly as I waited for the dizziness in my head to clear before making my way down the hallway, holding her tightly in my arms. I had been so consumed by her that I had not been aware of the clean-up that was already underway. All of the bodies had bee
Kaylee's P.O.V. "She was quite a character," I said as Kate stormed out of the room. I knew she would hear me. I wanted her to. With her wolf, she would probably be able to hear everything I said until she left the building. She knew very well what she was doing when she came in here talking to me like I was beneath her. Her disgust and disregard toward me were plain as day. "Yes, dear. That, she is." Parker's mother said with a chuckle as she patted my knee. The sound of a door slamming made me purse my lips together to hold in a laugh, as I knew Kate had heard her comment on her way out of the infirmary. "I take it there is a story there?" I asked as I looked up at Parker. His cheeks turned pink, and I stared at him in fascination. How could a man so large and intimidating be blushing? Was he blushing because of his past with Kate or because he was embarrassed that I was the one asking about it? "I really wish there wasn't." His large hand moved up to rub the back of his neck a
Parker's P.O.V.It didn't matter that I had volunteered myself to sleep on the couch. The last thing I wanted was for Kaylee to sleep anywhere but my bed. There was nothing that would make me happier than having her feel safe. Now that I finally had her here, I would be able to start the blueprints and outline for me to build our future home on the pack land. We would be out of my parent's house as soon as possible, and we could enjoy being together without anyone interrupting us or eavesdropping. After I showed her my room and gave her some clothes, she immediately climbed beneath my blankets and passed out. I didn't miss the way she seemed to take in a slightly deeper breath as her head hit my pillow. It seemed that she liked the way I smelled almost as much as I liked her scent. She was intoxicating. It took everything in me not to crawl into bed with her and hold her. Seeing her between my sheets had made me feel like everything was finally right in the world.I rolled onto my bac
Kaylee's P.O.V. There was a fine line between respect and disrespect. Something I had to refrain from crossing when Alpha Gabriel refused to let me visit with Olivia. She was the only person who knew even a fraction of what I had gone through having experienced it herself. I had already come to terms with my situation. It took a long time. It was hard to accept without anyone to help me or who I trusted, but I did it. So, I wanted to be there for her during her recovery. She didn't need to be alone after being locked up in the insane asylum with me, being fed off of by those bloodsucking corpses. I knew she had her mate, but I wanted her to know that she also had friends, someone who knew what she was going through and who she could talk to about it. I was kidnapped and held because they wanted to use my ability for their own personal gain. Olivia was taken because they wanted to make the pack weak. Without the Luna, the Alpha would fall. In return, so would the rest of the pack. T
Kaylee P.O.V. The rest of our walk was silent. I was so stunned by his declaration that I couldn't find words to respond. Love. He said I was the only woman he wanted to love him. With the intense pull to him, even without knowing anything more about him... I wanted to be that woman. I glanced up at him as he led me through the forest and toward the smell of fresh water. The light humidity in the air was refreshing in the midday heat. Before we even broke out of the tree line, I caught a glimpse of the lake. There was no point in masking my excitement. I hadn't seen a large body of water like this since I was a kid. Pulling out of Parker's arms, I rushed forward. My borrowed flip-flops slid off easily, and I ran right into the water until it reached my knees. A child-like giggle broke free from my lips as I kicked up, splashing water around me. "You are so beautiful," Parker said softly, and I froze, turning to him with my smile still in place. "You're not so bad yourself." With
Parker's P.O.V. "You would warn me, right? If you decided to leave, I mean. So, I could prepare myself and my wolf?" I asked as I gathered some clean clothes from my dresser. Everything in me regretted asking the question as soon it passed my lips. She was my mate, but that didn't mean that she would be accepting of my mark. Just because someone had a soulmate, didn't mean that everyone chose to be with them. After the unwelcoming first day Kaylee had here, I was surprised she hadn't left yet. The only person who had been truly happy to meet Kaylee was my mother. That didn't say a lot for my pack, but while they respected my position and the title I had earned over the years, it seemed that they still didn't respect me. When I had come home and found out that Kate had moved on from me, that not only had she been fucking my brother but had mated with him as well, I was livid. To me, I had reacted appropriately. I had waited for her for years as I busted my ass in training. I thought
Kaylee's P.O.V.There was a spring in my step. I was aware of it. I felt happy…free.I had woken up on top of Parker, his arm wrapped around me and our legs intertwined on the couch. As soon as I moved, he had held on tighter. It was the best sleep I had gotten in years. At first, I had given in to the temptation to snuggle into him further, pressing my face into his warm neck and relaxing back into the dream world. It was the sound of his father moving past us and toward the kitchen that burst the peaceful bubble I had been in. After the tense dinner that we had the night before, I was expecting at least one snide comment to come from him. Perhaps a look of disgust or disdain. But, as he moved passed, I cracked one eye open to see him staring back at us. He dipped his head in our direction, acknowledging our presence before continuing on.That brief, civil interaction had shocked me, but it wasn't the cause for the pep in my step. It was the way Parker had held my hand when we left t
Parker's P.O.V. I was ecstatic after getting the approval to start the blueprints for our home. Everyone in the pack was allowed a house of their own after finding their mate, under the condition that they contributed to the building of it themselves. Normally, the pack works together and brings the lines on the paper to life, but it was voluntary. I knew from my history that there wouldn't be many people lining up to help me. If there was one thing a wolf was guaranteed to do, it was holding a grudge. Our memories weren't perfect, but there wasn't too much that we would forget. It had been five years since I came home and reacted to Kate cheating on me with my brother. Knowing that pack hadn't forgiven me yet, meant that it would define me forever. That one outburst of hurt and betrayal had been held over me at every possible opportunity. Kaylee had gotten home before I did, and I had only hoped that no one was there to bother her. My mother adored her, but Kate, Jack, and my fath
