The grand heavy doors of the Lycan Citadel slammed shut behind us with a deafening thud. The sound echoed through the massive black stone foyer, sealing me away from the only world I had ever known.

I stood shivering on the cold marble floor. The oversized black sweater Lucien had given me swallowed my small frame, reaching down to my thighs. Hundreds of Lycan guards stood at strict attention along the perimeter of the room, their silver eyes tracking my every breath.

"Take her to the high tower suite," Lucien ordered, his voice echoing authoritatively off the vaulted ceilings. He didn't look back at me as he tossed his heavy coat to a waiting attendant. "Bathe her, feed her, and ensure she doesn't leave the room."

"Wait," I called out, taking a step forward. My voice sounded small against the vastness of the hall. "Am I your prisoner?"

Lucien stopped. He turned slowly, his sharp, aristocratic features completely unreadable under the glow of the crystal chandeliers.

"A prisoner is kept in the dungeons, Lyra," he said smoothly, his eyes raking over my pale face. "You are being kept in luxury. But make no mistake—until I understand the silver fire burning inside you, you are not free to roam."

Before I could protest, two imposing female Lycan warriors stepped up to my sides. Their expressions were stern, but their movements were surprisingly gentle as they guided me toward the grand spiral staircase.

As they led me away, I looked over my shoulder. Lucien was watching me go, his piercing silver gaze locked onto mine with an intensity that made the sleepy wolf inside me stir.

He is dangerous, the ancient voice whispered in the back of my mind. But he is the shield we need until I am fully awake.

The high tower suite was grander than the entire Alpha floor of the Bloodstone Packhouse. A massive canopy bed draped in rich crimson silk sat in the center of the room. A roaring fireplace crackled in the corner, throwing warmth across a table piled high with fresh fruits, roasted meats, and fine pastries.

For the first time in seven years, I wasn't the one preparing the feast. I was the one being served.

After a hot bath that washed away the dirt and dried blood of my old life, I sat by the window, wrapped in a plush robe. I ate hungrily, the rich food restoring the energy Kael's rejection had drained from me.

The physical pain of the broken mate bond was gone, completely suppressed by whatever magic Lucien's touch had sparked. But the emotional scar remained. Every time I closed my eyes, I could still hear the pack’s cruel laughter and see Kael's arrogant smirk as he tore our souls apart.

A sudden, sharp knock broke the silence of the room.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Lucien stepped inside. He had changed into a simple black tailored shirt, the top buttons undone, revealing the strong cords of his neck. Without his heavy royal robes, he looked less like a distant king and more like a lethal predator.

"You look better," he noted, walking over to the fireplace. He leaned his shoulder against the mantle, watching me.

"I feel better," I admitted, keeping my distance. "The bond... it doesn't hurt anymore. Why? A rejected mate is supposed to suffer for weeks. Some die from the heartbreak."

"Lesser wolves suffer," Lucien countered, his voice dropping to a low, hypnotic register. "But you are not a lesser wolf, Lyra. When I touched you in the woods, my aura suppressed the remnant of your old Alpha's magic. He is too weak to bind someone like you."

He stepped away from the fireplace, closing the distance between us until he stood right in front of my chair. The scent of ozone and blood-wine flooded my senses, making my pulse quicken.

"Tell me about your parents," he commanded.

I blinked, caught off guard. "My parents? My father was the Head Warrior of Bloodstone. He died in a rogue raid when I was thirteen. My mother died alongside him."

"And your mother's lineage?" Lucien pressed, his silver eyes burning into mine. "Where did she come from?"

"I... I don't know," I stammered, realization suddenly washing over me. "She never talked about her pack. My father met her in the neutral territories. She didn't have a pack marking. Everyone assumed she was an omega rogue."

Lucien let out a low, dangerous hum. "A rogue. That is the lie she told to protect you. The silver fire I felt inside you tonight does not belong to a rogue. It belongs to a bloodline that was thought to be extinct for a thousand years."

He reached out, his long fingers gently catching my chin, forcing me to look up at him. The moment our skin connected, that same electric warmth surged through my veins, making my inner wolf purr with satisfaction.

"The Moon Queen," I whispered, remembering the vision of the parchment.

"The last Moon Queen vanished during the Great Lycan War," Lucien said, his thumb brushing lightly across my lower lip. "Her descendants were said to possess a wolf so pure, so powerful, that its roar could command entire packs to drop to their knees. If you carry her blood, Lyra, you are the most dangerous being in this territory."

"But my wolf never awakened," I argued, my heart hammering against my ribs. "I'm twenty. If I were a queen, wouldn't I have changed by now?"

"Your wolf was suppressed," Lucien explained, his gaze dropping to my lips before snapping back to my eyes. "The Bloodstone packhouse is built on a cursed ley line. They choked your power, keeping you weak so they could use you as a slave. But Kael's rejection broke the shackles. He thought he was discarding trash, but he inadvertently unlocked your cage."

He let go of my chin, stepping back, though the heat of his presence remained.

"Tomorrow, we begin your training," Lucien said coldly, his royal mask slipping back into place. "If the packs find out what you are, they will march on these gates to claim you or kill you. You must learn to wield the fire in your blood."

"And what do you want from me, King Lucien?" I challenged, standing up to face him. "You didn't save me out of the goodness of your heart. What is your price?"

Lucien paused at the doorway, looking back over his shoulder. A dark, enigmatic smile played on his lips.

"I have lived for centuries, Lyra. I have seen empires rise and fall, and I have never found a woman who could withstand my touch without trembling in fear," he murmured, his voice sending a shiver down my spine. "You don't fear me. And that makes you the only interesting thing in this world."

With that, he exited the room, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.

I sank back into my chair, my mind racing. I was a servant no longer. I was a weapon in training. Kael had wanted to purge weakness from his pack, but he had thrown away the ultimate power.

Meanwhile, across the border, the Bloodstone Packhouse was in utter chaos.

In the private study of the Alpha, Kael Blackthorn slammed his fists onto his mahogany desk, splitting the heavy wood clean down the middle.

"What do you mean she is with the Lycan King?!" Kael roared, his sea-storm eyes flashing with a wild, uncontrollable fury.

Beta Thomas stood trembling before him, a thick white bandage wrapped around his bruised throat. "Alpha... we tried to bring her back. But King Lucien intercepted us at the border. He slaughtered the vanguard and threatened to destroy the entire pack if we crossed into his land. He claimed she is under his protection."

"She is an omega! A servant!" Victoria shrieked from the couch, her face twisted in ugly jealousy. "Why would the Lycan King care about a packless mutt? Kael, you rejected her publicly! If the other packs think we let a servant run away to the Lycans with pack secrets, we will look weak!"

"Shut up, Victoria!" Kael snarled, turning on his betrothed with a savagery that made her flinch.

Kael rubbed his temples, a strange, suffocating pressure tightening around his chest. Ever since the rejection ceremony, he hadn't felt the triumph he expected. Instead, a hollow, agonizing emptiness had settled deep in his gut. His wolf was restless, clawing at his mind, howling in deep, mournful regret.

You threw her away, his wolf hissed in his mind. You rejected the prize.

"There is something else, Alpha," Thomas whispered, his voice shaking. "Before the Lycan King took her... the scouts reported a massive spike in spiritual energy in the eastern woods. The ancient warning runes didn't just flash. They shattered."

Kael froze. The warning runes were designed to react only to royal or ancient bloodlines.

"Bring me the archives," Kael commanded, his voice suddenly turning deadly quiet. "Bring me the ancient lineage scrolls of the founding families."

Thomas rushed out of the room, returning minutes later with a dusty, leather-bound cylinder. Kael tore it open, unrolling the ancient parchment across his broken desk. His eyes scanned the family trees, tracing the lineages of the families that had joined the Bloodstone pack centuries ago.

He stopped at the name of Lyra's mother.

Beneath the false name recorded by the pack elders, a faint, hidden magical seal began to glow under Kael’s touch. The illusion melted away, revealing the true crest hidden beneath the ink—a silver crescent moon surrounded by white roses.

The crest of the Moon Queen.

Kael’s breath caught in his throat. The parchment slipped from his trembling fingers, fluttering to the floor. The room felt entirely devoid of air.

"No," Kael whispered, his face turning entirely pale as a wave of absolute horror washed over him. "No, this is impossible. She was an omega... she had no scent..."

"Kael? What is it?" Victoria asked, stepping closer to look at the scroll.

Kael didn't hear her. The realization hit him like a physical blow to the chest, shattering his arrogant composure. He hadn't just rejected a useless servant to secure a political alliance. He had publicly humiliated and discarded the sole heir to the most powerful bloodline in werewolf history. A woman whose mere presence as his Luna would have made him the emperor of the entire continent.

And now, she was in the arms of the Lycan King.

"Assemble the warriors," Kael choked out, his voice cracking with a sudden, desperate panic as he gripped the edge of his desk. "We are going to the Lycan border."

"Kael, are you insane?!" Victoria yelled. "Lucien will kill us all!"

Kael turned his terror-stricken eyes toward her, his chest heaving as the weight of his monumental error crushed his soul.

"You don't understand," Kael roared, tears of pure rage and regret welling in his eyes. "I gave her away. I gave the Queen to the Lycan King!"

The sky above the Lycan border had turned the color of bruised iron. A torrential rain began to fall, freezing the moment it hit the dark, jagged stone of the Citadel's outer gates.I stood on the high stone parapet, hidden from view by the deep shadows of the battlements. Down below, the iron gates groaned as a massive force gathered outside.Dozens of Bloodstone vehicles and armed riders formed a dense, hostile semicircle in the snow. At the very front, astride a massive black warhorse, stood Kael.He was no longer the pristine, smiling Alpha from the ballroom. His formal uniform was soaked through, mud splattered across his chest, and his sea-storm eyes were bloodshot and wild. He looked like a man possessed, his knuckles white as he gripped the reins. The heavy iron gates of the Citadel slowly ground open.Lucien walked out alone. He didn't bring an army. He didn't even draw a weapon. He simply stepped into the freezing rain, his long black coat trailing in the slush, his hands tu

The following morning, the Citadel did not wake to the sound of birds, but to the rhythmic, bone-jarring thrum of training daggers hitting target dummies.I stood in the center of the subterranean training hall, my chest heaving. Sweat slicked my skin, and my muscles burned with a fatigue I had never known. The training armor they had strapped me into—lightweight dragon-hide, black as coal—felt heavy and unnatural."Again," Lucien’s voice cut through the air, cool and detached. He stood ten paces away, his arms crossed over his chest. He hadn't lifted a finger to help me, yet his presence was a constant, crushing weight that forced me to be better.I lunged forward, blade outstretched. I was fast—faster than any omega had a right to be—but Lucien didn't even shift his feet. He simply flicked his wrist, and the wooden training sword in his hand caught my blade, sending a jarring vibration up my arm that nearly made me drop it."You are fighting like a pack servant," he critiqued, his s

The sheer weight of his aura pressed down on the clearing, forcing the dark trees to creak and groans under the pressure. Rogues froze in fear at the mere mention of his name, yet here he was, standing over me in the freezing snow."Stay... back," I choked out, my voice barely a whisper.Every breath felt like inhaling shards of glass. The scent of roasting wild boar and expensive French perfume clung to the stone walls of the Bloodstone Packhouse. Tonight was the Ascension Ball.It was the night Kael Blackthorn would officially take his place as Alpha. It was also the night the entire pack expected him to announce his political betrothal to Lady Victoria.I kept my head low, the rough fabric of my servant’s apron scratching against my collarbone. I hauled another heavy tray of crystal flutes up from the kitchen. My hands were raw, chapped from scrubbing grease since dawn."Move it, Omega," a sharp voice snapped. Before I could step aside, a heavy combat boot shot out.
