BENJAMIN’S POV

"You missed the council meeting again."

Callum stood in the doorway of my office, his arms crossed, his expression carefully neutral. He’d been using that voice a lot lately — the one that sounded like he was stating a fact instead of lodging a complaint.

I didn’t look up from the report I wasn’t reading. “Reschedule it.”

“I’ve rescheduled it twice already. The elders are starting to talk.”

“Let them talk.”

“Benjamin.” He stepped into the room, letting the door swing shut behind

He was just feeling guilt for what he did to his wife and dying son… that was all. He had never knew them or care to do and spent anytime with them so there wasn’t any love lost but just guilt

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0096: One Step Away From Me

JOHN’S POVThe child's name was Toby, and I didn't know he'd be all right until I was down on my knees with the stethoscope, listening for it. Respiratory infection — not the kind that takes a child in the night. But his mother hadn't known that, and neither had I, not until I'd knelt and heard it for myself. The storm had drowned the main road. She couldn't get him to the clinic, so I'd gone to them instead, out across the compound in the rain, soaked clean through before I was even halfway. By the time I reached their door in the east wing the boy was coughing so hard he couldn't find the bottom of a breath."How long has he been like this?""Since this afternoon. It got worse when the rain started." Her name was Lena. Her hands wouldn't hold still. "I didn't know if I should bring him in. The roads—""You did the right thing calling me. Let me take a look at him."Toby was six, and small for it, his dark hair stuck to his forehead with the fever. He sat up in bed with a blanket bun

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0095: Waited In The Rain

ALICE’S POVMorwen set two cups of tea on my desk before I'd asked for either."You've been sitting here since the first thunder." She looked to the window. "That was an hour ago.""I have paperwork.""You have a referral form you've turned face-up and face-down three times." She pulled the spare chair over and sat without asking. Thunder cracked overhead. She glanced at the glass, then back at me. "How bad tonight?""Bad."She nodded like that settled it. She'd sat through storms with me before — back when I couldn't make my face behave — and never once asked what they meant. She brought tea and stayed close and let my hands shake and never said a word about it."He used to try and catch rain in a cup." My voice came out smaller than I meant it to. "Lucian. Stood on the porch with this little plastic cup like he could water the whole garden himself.""Did he ever get any?""A few drops. Never stopped trying." I picked up the tea. The warmth found my fingers before anything else did. "

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0094: Left Shoulder Full Of Guilt

BENJAMIN’S POV"You're still here," Morwen said. The courier had been gone ten minutes. The authorization was still there on the clipboard, signed, where I'd left it, and the pen lay beside it, forgotten — uncapped, drying out, where neither of us had touched it."I wanted to see it done right.""The shipment was fine. You're hovering.""I'm not hovering."She closed one patient file and opened another. Outside, thunder rolled low across a grey morning. Then her hands stopped on the file. She straightened a stack of forms that was already straight, squared the edges twice, and looked up."Is something wrong?" I asked."Alice doesn't like thunderstorms.""Afraid of the lightning?"She turned the clipboard face-down on the counter before she answered, like she wanted her hands doing something while she said it."Not afraid."I waited."Lucian loved storms. He'd drag a chair to the window and count the seconds between lightning and thunder. He believed loud thunder meant wolves were bowli

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0093: Seeds Of Doubt

Lisa’s POVCole let himself in an hour later, no knock, just the click of the door."Productive day?" he asked."Very." I handed him the folder like it was something precious I was trusting to him, which, in its way, it was.He read through it, his face giving me nothing. "This is thorough.""I'm building something." I said it the way I'd say I'm planting a garden — something patient, something that would bloom into gratitude in time, once people understood."So I see." He closed the folder. "And when you're done — when Benjamin doubts her and the pack turns — what do you actually get?"I opened my mouth. Nothing came, which had never once happened to me in front of Cole before."That's not the point," I said, finding the warmth again a beat too late to cover the gap."It is the point. What is it?""I'll know when I get there." I smiled saying it, the way I smile at anything I haven't decided how to answer yet.He nodded like he'd expected that answer and wished he hadn't been right.

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0092: Building Her Ruin

LISA'S POVThe drawing was still propped against the lamp when I sat down — the blue wolf, the woman in the white coat, their shoulders nearly touching, the two of them standing closer than anyone in this house had ever stood for me. I turned it face-down before I picked up the pen. Some things a mother handles quietly, before anyone even has to watch her do it.Six names. Six people who trusted me enough to come and talk, because I've always been the kind of woman people trust.Harris first. A guard, night shift, off duty since dawn, and looking like he'd rather be anywhere but that chair."I'm not in trouble?" he asked."Routine information gathering." I said it gently, the way you'd promise a child the doctor won't hurt a bit.He eased up and gave me exactly what I needed — Alice walked the compound alone at night, past midnight, more than once. He left thinking he'd helped a worried mother look after her own. I wrote: Walks alone at night. No oversight. Someone had to notice. It m

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0091: What Am I Doing?

ALICE’S POVTwo nurses stopped talking when I came around the corner into the break room. Not the wary silence from before — a different one, shaped, like I’d walked into the middle of something.I found the shape of it an hour later. The door between my office and the supply room — the one Morwen kept shut for the stuck hinge — had a rubber wedge under it that hadn’t been there yesterday. A straight line from my desk to the shelf Benjamin restocked every morning.I picked the wedge up, set it back exactly where I’d found it, and went back to my desk. Let them look.Marta brought coffee to the desk without being asked, set it down, and didn’t leave — stood a second longer than a coffee delivery needed, waiting to see if I’d say something. I didn’t. She picked up a folder that wasn’t hers, put it back exactly where it had been, and left.I had patients. I didn’t have time to wonder what either of them wanted.Callum found me in the corridor after that.“Dr. Watson.” He fell into step l

ALICE'S POVI'd just got my shoes off when the knock came.It was late. The compound had been quiet an hour. I sat on the edge of the bed and listened for it to come again before I went.I opened the door when I heard the knock the second time.Drake hung off John's shoulder in the corridor — loose

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0063: You Weren't There

Benjamin POVMorning light filled the kitchen, that warm yellow that comes early and doesn't last, and the whole room smelled like pancakes.Lucian sat at the table, swinging his legs under the chair the way he always did — four years old, legs too short to reach the floor, swinging them anyway."D

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0057: Rejection Denied

ALICE'S POVThe bond was still there when I walked out — the same press against my chest it had been since the clearing. The compound was quiet. I crossed the frozen ground barefoot and didn't feel it.John was on the step outside my door, still in his training coat, the cold pressing it flat again

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0043. I Couldn't Let Her Win

ALICE’S POVBenjamin stood in my doorway, pale, and I knew. Callum had told him I'd gone to Lisa's alone."You went to Lisa's house." His voice was rough. "Alone.""I did.""Why?" He stepped inside and shut the door behind him. His hands hung at his sides, the fingers opening and closing. "After ev
