ALICE’S POV

Callum came up those stairs first, took one look, and started giving orders nobody had asked him for. Every window. Both doors. Two on the front, one on the yard, nobody in or out of this building.

Benjamin and Drake came in behind him.

Benjamin stopped in the doorway.

"Is he alive?"

"Barely breathing." I got up off the floor. My hands were red to the wrist. "Four claw wounds, shoulder and chest. Head injury where he went into the desk. He's lost a great deal of blood. He's stable,

ALICE’S POVCallum came up those stairs first, took one look, and started giving orders nobody had asked him for. Every window. Both doors. Two on the front, one on the yard, nobody in or out of this building.Benjamin and Drake came in behind him.Benjamin stopped in the doorway."Is he alive?""Barely breathing." I got up off the floor. My hands were red to the wrist. "Four claw wounds, shoulder and chest. Head injury where he went into the desk. He's lost a great deal of blood. He's stable, and he needs watching every hour.""How long has he been here?""Hours. He's cold, Benjamin. If I'd come in ten minutes later—" I stopped. That sentence had nowhere good to go.Benjamin held my gaze for a moment longer. Then he turned to the room. The broken window. The blood on the floor. The open drawers.Drake had gone straight to the desk.He crouched at the broken drawer and looked at the lock without touching it."What was he working on.""The investigation. All of it. He keeps a notebook.

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0193: Barely A Pulse

ALICE'S POVMy journal was still on my desk, right where I'd left it. That's the only reason I was at the clinic at ten past six that morning. There was a study in it on muscle recovery after a shift, and I'd been too tired the night before to walk back for it. I told myself it would still be there when I get back.Six o'clock, then. The sky was barely up. Nothing moving across the whole compound except a man carrying feed down toward the paddock. The two guards on the perimeter nodded me through."Early start, Doctor." One of them said."Forgot something." I replied, walking ahead. The waiting room was dark. Reception empty, chairs still stacked where the night girl leaves them. I noticed the light in John's office was still on.Of course it was. That man had slept at that desk twice this month, and I'd told him about it but I guess he won’t quit until someone send him home by forceI went up those stairs putting the words together for the third time. Four steps from the top, and my

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0192:He Knew Everything

LISA'S POVHalf past eleven put me in the trees behind the clinic, because the doctor was the one man in this territory I'd run out of time on.Benjamin's still who everything runs through. That hasn't changed. But I can't turn four men against each other in a week, and John Marlow doesn't need a week. He keeps finding things. Every few days there's one more, and he writes each one down in that book of his, and one morning he carries it up the hill and lays it in front of Benjamin, and I'm finished. So it was never the man I wanted tonight. It was the book. The old footpaths took me down — the ones Cora showed me fifteen years ago, out after wild garlic. The clinic emptied one window at a time. Morwen first, collar up against the cold. Two assistants after her, talking the whole way down the path. The ground floor went dark in a run from the far end, the way Alice always does it. One light stayed on. His office. An hour in those trees and I couldn't feel my fingers. A car came up th

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0191: Exactly What I Needed

JOHN’S POVBenjamin came into my clinic at twenty past nine with Callum a step behind him and Drake a step behind Callum, and I had a young warrior's ankle in both hands at the time.Morwen got to me first."They're in your office. All three.""Then they can be in my office another four minutes."I finished the wrap. I told the boy to stay off that foot for three days, to come back if the swelling climbed past the bone. He said yes. He will not do it. They never do.Then I went through.Benjamin was at the window. Callum had the door. Drake had put himself against my bookcase with his arms crossed, and the sealed pouch with the blue cloth in it sat on my desk where somebody had set it down and nobody had touched it since.Benjamin did not spend any time getting to it."We've missed something.""Go on.""One of the young ones on the search. Barely two years on patrol." He came off the window. "He told Callum there was soap under the herbs on that cloth. Floral. Almost nothing left of i

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0190: No Summons Came

LISA'S POVFour days I gave them, and I woke up on the fourth one having slept the whole night through.Nobody came. No summons, no warrior standing in my path in the dark hours. The dreams are still in there — Lily's face, Cora at my kitchen table with her hands around a cup, not understanding one thing that was happening to her — but they come through a wall now instead of through the room, and I got up at seven and could feel my own hands again.I stood at the mirror and took a good look. Dark under both eyes. Cheeks gone. Hair nobody has spent ten minutes on in a month.Good.Grieving mothers are allowed to look like that. It's the other thing I am that can't afford to look like anything at all.I made myself smile at the glass and watched what my face did with it, then put the brush down.Drake Watson had me alone in a field with nobody inside half a mile of us. He asked me a question, watched my hands while I answered it, then let me walk home, and I've been going around this co

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0189: Not Evidence

John's POVI had everything out on that worktable before the Alpha Benjamin was halfway up the path.Cora Maren's report. My own sketches from the postmortem, both wrists, drawn in a hand I could barely hold steady that first night. The little envelope with the thread from under her left index nail, no longer than a grain of rice. And now the cloth off the branch, out of its bag and flat under the light.Morwen came in with two pairs of gloves and set one down beside me."You're building the board again.""I'm comparing."She pulled hers on and took the other side of the table without waiting to be asked. The cloth first. Dark blue wool, heavy weave, the kind that goes into a coat a man means to keep ten winters. The edges had gone rough and furred after a week of weather on a branch, and mud had dried hard into one corner. Then the thread, under the lens. Same blue — the exact same blue, and I've looked at that thread more times in three weeks than I've looked at my own hands. Set th

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0004. Four Years Too Late

ALICE’S POVThe days that followed had a rhythm I didn’t trust.Benjamin came every morning. He actually sat at the table — something I still hadn’t gotten used to — and ate whatever I put in front of him. He returned every evening and stayed until Lucian’s eyes drifted shut.Four mornings in a row

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0003. Don't Get Used To It

ALICE’S POVBy the time I walked into the hospital room, I had composed myself completely. My face was set.Lucian was awake, sitting up in bed. His face brightened the moment he saw me."Mommy. You came back.""I came back." I lifted him into my arms. He smelled like baby shampoo, antiseptic, and

Alice’s POV"What?""Is this your new plan? To trap me again?" Benjamin’s voice dripped with contempt. "Did you run out of tricks, Alice? Is faking our son’s terminal illness really the best you could come up with?"I couldn’t breathe. The hospital hallway seemed to close in around me, the walls pr

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0001:One Month Left

ALICE’S POVI hadn't slept. I'd counted his breaths instead. It had been four hours since Lucian collapsed at breakfast. Four hours since I’d screamed loud enough to wake every wolf on our floor of the western wing. Now the monitors did the counting for me — soft, steady, mechanical as my son slept
