ALICE'S POV

The door clicked behind Benjamin, and I stayed where I was with my hands flat on the examination table.

The vinyl was cold against my palms. The seam under my right thumb was rough and familiar — I'd been pressing on it without noticing, probably since he walked in. The light was unchanged. Everything in the room was exactly where it had been before he arrived, and I was very tired.

My hands were also holding the wolf.

I looked down. The worn fur was compressed between my left finger

It was saying like on anniversaries she thinks about him like the day he turned 7 or when he would’ve started school

This story brings so many emotions to the surface. It's well written and I'm loving how hooked I am. It's not east to find a good book these days.

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0159: She Killed Lily

BENJAMIN'S POVOne of the warriors on the far side of the hole said it first, quiet, meant only for the man next to him, relief riding under it."Well. That's it, then.""No."It carried farther than I meant it to. Nine faces came around."Nothing here is touched until Marlow's been over every foot of this clearing — including the soil you've all just put back on that pile. Nobody speaks of what's in that crate. Not to a wife, not to a brother, not in the pack. You'll hear it from me in the hall, when there's something to hear."Callum was already turning, already splitting them up — two on the trail head, two on the eastern approach, the rest standing off the ground they'd just opened.John stayed down beside her a long time."Same compound," he said when he came up. "Blue at the mouth, the nail beds, the stiffness pattern. The smell of it, and I'd know that in my sleep by now. Lower dose than the child got, and slower with it. Same thing, off the same shelf.""Then say the rest."He

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0158: She Killed Lily

JOHN'S POVAt six in the morning, I was down on the floor of Alice's office with my shoulder against her desk, walking it eight inches off the wall, because I'd run out of places to look that an ordinary man would look.At this point, I had to look at things, not as a doctor trying to prove the innocence of the woman he loves but as a detective solving a murder case.I noticed an imprint on the floor where a piece of folded paper was. Down in the gap between the desk leg and the skirting, pressed flat, wet at some point and dried out again. The stain had gone through it in two places and taken the ink with it. It had been there since that morning, or it had been there since March, and the room wasn't going to tell me which. What was left readable was six words out of what might have been thirty.after morning rounds don't tellIt has no name. No date. Not my handwriting and not Alice's, and I had five months of both to set it against. I sat on that floor with it a while before I got u

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0157: Searching The Hedge

ALICE'S POVI woke up in my clothes with my shoes still on, and I made tea, because that's the first thing I've done every morning of my adult life. The water boiled. I poured it. Steam came up off the mug and I stood there with the pot still in my hand and couldn't set it down, couldn't drink it either.Images of Lily’s hand reaching out toward the desk. The color gone out of her mouth. The tea across the floor and soaking into her sleeve.I dumped the mug into the sink, rinsed it twice, and put it away. My hands weren't steady for a while after that.Twelve days, and I'm a doctor who can't be in a room with a cup of tea.The guard knocked at seven with the tray."Any word?"He looked at his boots first, which is how I know there's been word."They found her necklace, Doctor. Down at the river yesterday. The silver one." He straightened up. "Nothing else. And they've had four teams on that water two days."I carried the tray in, shut the door, and stood in my own kitchen holding it.

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0156: Eleven Days Later

LISA'S POVI dreamed about the honey stall.Regular Saturday, market packed, Lily hanging off my sleeve and pointing at the one with the wooden dipper — the one the old woman always let her taste. In life I said no. We were late and I still had bread to get and I said no, sweetheart, not today. In the dream I said yes. That's all it was. I said yes, and she got up on her toes with her mouth open, and the old woman put the dipper down for her, and I woke up in the dark with her laugh still going in the room.Eleven days. She's still lying in that building.Outside, the compound was holding its breath when I went out. Warriors heading off in twos toward the eastern path. Men leaning on the fence by the training ground who should've been working. Conversations that stopped half a second late as I came past, and picked up again once I'd gone by.I heard three versions before I got to the market. That Cora ran because she'd done it. That somebody took her. That she knows who put it in that

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0155: Only One Walked Away

BENJAMIN'S POVJohn was in my office before I got to it, and the pendant was already out of the bag and lying on the map.Silver wolf on a broken chain. Somebody had tried to fix that chain once and made a bad job of it."Riverbank," Callum said. "Beyond the eastern patrol route, half into the mud at the water's edge. One of the trackers caught the light off it.""How long had it been there?""Not long. No tarnish, no weathering.""That's Cora Maren's." I turned it over with one finger. "That mended chain. She's worn it every day I've seen her.""It proves she was at that river," John said. "It doesn't prove one thing more than that, and I'd rather nobody in this compound started saying it does."He'd been up most of the night and it showed. He'd brought two more things with him too, laid out in the right order — that's what makes him worth listening to."I've been asking the wrong question since Wednesday," he said. "I kept asking who saw what in the corridor. Yesterday afternoon I s

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0154: Pendant In The Mud

ALICE'S POVThe figure came one step out of the trees and stopped. It stayed there long enough that I understood it wanted to be seen. Then it went back into the dark.I didn't call the guards.I stood at the window with my hand on the curtain and worked out the cost. Two men through the trees with a lamp, nothing to show for it, same as last time. By morning it'd be in the council report — the doctor under protection, seeing things in the dark again. Marcus would find a use for that. Every ruling Benjamin had made about me would be worth less than it already was.So I shut off the last light and went to bed.I was up at six. Hair pulled back, shower, the same coffee in front of the same window, watching the pack move without me. Eight days now.Nobody came at seven. At half past I asked the guard if there'd been word from the Alpha's house. No word. At nine I asked again. He said he'd find out. He came back at half past and told me it was in hand.My coffee went cold. I put the kettl

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0002: Thirty Days of Dad

Alice’s POV"What?""Is this your new plan? To trap me again?" Benjamin’s voice dripped with contempt. "Did you run out of tricks, Alice? Is faking our son’s terminal illness really the best you could come up with?"I couldn’t breathe. The hospital hallway seemed to close in around me, the walls pr

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0001:One Month Left

ALICE’S POVI hadn't slept. I'd counted his breaths instead. It had been four hours since Lucian collapsed at breakfast. Four hours since I’d screamed loud enough to wake every wolf on our floor of the western wing. Now the monitors did the counting for me — soft, steady, mechanical as my son slept

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0006: He is a Mistake

ALICE’S POVI should have taken Lucian home.I should have picked him up, carried him away from this festival of false joy and false hope, and tucked him into bed with a story, a kiss, and a promise that tomorrow would be better. But I didn’t. Because Lucian wanted to see the fireworks. And I could

  • The Alpha's Greatest Regret   0005. Kid's First Betrayal

ALICE’S POVThe Blue Moon Festival was Lucian’s idea of heaven and my four-year plan of endurance. He’d been talking about it for weeks—the lanterns, the fireworks, the honey cakes from the booth near the stage. When he’d asked, he’d pressed both hands together like he was praying, eyes wide, and I
