I could escape

Nothing interested them as their work was neat. Maria, who knew how they were, thought it would be nice to give them listening ears, be patient and overlook some things. You would wonder if they know what they want.

At Twilight Maria who was very exhausted, on her way home felt dizzy as if something fetid perched on her but yet none. She could feel her feet fanciful not knowing what to do at the moment.

Dark tree trunks, shadows, and overhanging limbs across the path were seen at the last second, clumps of bushes, barely visible black trails snaking through the undergrowth, the moon was shining through a lattice of leaves, the patchy sky & stars were seen in glimpses through tree breaks, and tall shadowed pines stretching up like arrows into the sky. All of a sudden she felt her feet weaken and her eyes misty. Yes, she was beaten by something not specific; it felt like bees.

The wolves encircled the vampire glaring into each other's eyes and growling ferociously. The sounds rattled the bones of the surrounding werewolves, who howled and pawed the ground. Some wanted this to happen but others wished it wasn't this way.

Maria rushed through the path of the thick bush which had tall grasses, almost tripping over an exposed tree root. Fear gripped her because she knew nothing that was going on there. She wanted to help stop the fight.

Ruthie's upper lips curled over his sharp incisor "stay out of this lanthe" he said in wolf speak.

"Oh really??" Lanthe replied, mimicking his gesture.

"Maria will never choose you. You're the only one who got in the way!"

"Just because you're the alpha doesn't mean you get everything you want. I also am a leader in my clan and you have to understand that". Some of the wolves growled in either agreement or disgust at what the leader of the vampire said.

"So you admit to taking my mate" he drew back his lips in a smile. Ruthie's growl resonated from deep in his throat.

"She is not your mate!" Without another word, he launched at Ruthie and his claw spread ready to kill then he paused as if being controlled. He could perceive humans coming. It smelled like a feminist.

Maria had rushed to save a halt at a point. She sensed danger then she heard the sound of a wolf echo from within. She looked up and it was a full blue moon. She thought to herself they would find her and see her if she made any noise.

They had only gone a few meters when there was a sound of hurried footsteps behind them. Without hesitation, lanthe appeared in front of her followed by the alpha wolf to stop him. Maria broke out in cold sweat petrified, she then took another path hoping and praying hard to get home. Her heart was racing and her feet were wobbly as she ran. She could see their shadows from her frightened state, she could hear their voices telling her to wait, and she could see Grandma waiting for her. Everything seems to be faster.

She got to her doorstep trying to call out to Grandmother but her voice seized and there she slummed. Grandma who was in the yard got a feeling to rush out and when she did, Marie was breathless for almost 7 minutes. She called Darren who just parked a few months ago for help.

Darren was one of the medical assistants in the Air Force and had just returned to Kerkstraat for holiday. He was dark and chubby, having a bald head and full beard.

He's a divorcee who never had a chance to say goodbye to his little Saida. His slogan was believed and has always believed things to be alright. "She'll be fine," he said.

He took her in and placed her on the chaise longue. He placed one hand on her forehead and gently tilted her head back. He placed the fingertips of his other hand on the point of her chin and lifted her chin. He looked, listened, and felt for normal breathing and placed her in a recovery position. Maria's temperature was normal so she needed a rest.

Grandmother had prepared Steak And Spinach Mashed Potatoes for dinner with orange juice. She had set the dining table when she heard Marie call her using a weak tone. "Imogen, thank God you're awake. Have water". Mum watched her as she drank slowly then she got the cup and kept it on the side stool. "Mum, what happened? I'm hungry," she said, still with her eyes closed. Mum brought her food to her and fed her little by little.

Grandma had no daughter nor a son and had blessed God to find Maria and had taken responsibility for her. As if looking at something beautiful then she bid her good night making sure everywhere was closed and the light off except the living room where Maria was.

She was left alone in the room and her focus was drawn to the tall trees in the yard and then to every corner of the room. She could see the creature in the void and their voices. The argument they had earlier, all went through her mind then she knew she had a blackout.

Waking up the next morning, she felt sharp pains in her head, and ice was applied to cool down her temperature. She thought about what had happened last night but yet she didn't know. She knew she felt pain, something stung her. Then she remembered she slummed.

Grandma has always been supportive notwithstanding. Although she wasn't hers she took it her responsibility to take care of her. She felt bad she wasn't there for most of the time and now she's ill. Remembering what happened last, grandma didn't forget to be watchful. She felt something was going on; something she never knew something Maria may have not noticed it told her.
