Kael's POV

"She's going to die, and you're just letting it happen."

Damon's words hit me like a punch to the gut. My beta stands across my desk, arms crossed, his face hard with judgment.

"It's her choice," I say, though the words taste like ash in my mouth.

"Is it?" He leans forward, pressing his hands flat on my desk. "Or did you make it impossible for her to choose anything else? You let her fall in love with you, Kael. You let the bond grow strong. Now she can't leave even if she wanted to."

He's right. I know he's right. But what was I supposed to do? Push her away harder? Tell her the truth sooner? Would any of that have changed the outcome?

"I tried to warn her," I say weakly.

"Not hard enough." Damon straightens up, shaking his head. "The council meets in an hour. They're going to demand you send her away."

"Let them demand." My wolf snarls inside me at the thought of anyone trying to take Clara from me. "I won't do it."

"Then you're a fool." Damon heads for the door, then pa

  • The Alpha's Last Choice   Chapter 34: Sister's Arrival

Clara's POV "I don't care what you say. I'm not staying locked in some safe house while my sister is dying."Emma's voice carries through the hotel room door before I even knock. She's arguing with the guards Kael assigned her… two patient warriors who clearly didn't sign up for babysitting duty.I open the door. "Emma."She spins around, and her face goes through several emotions… relief, anger, fear, then back to anger."Clara." She crosses the room and hugs me so hard my ribs protest. Then she pulls back and punches my shoulder. "What the hell is going on? Armed men grabbed me from my apartment. Told me I was in danger. Wouldn't explain why. And you…" She stops, really looking at me. "Oh my God. What happened to you?"I catch my reflection in the hotel mirror. I've lost at least fifteen pounds. My skin is pale, almost translucent. Dark circles under my eyes make me look like I haven't slept in weeks. Which I haven't, really."It's complicated," I say."Complicated? Clara, you look

  • The Alpha's Last Choice   Chapter 33: Damon's Confession

Clara's POV "Sarah's grave is in the south section. Near the old oak tree." Damon's voice is quiet as we walk through the pack cemetery. We arrived in the city an hour ago. Emma is safe, extracted by Shadowclaw warriors and currently in protective custody. The wolf watching her apartment was Bloodfang, confirming Marcus is still playing games. But instead of going straight to the coven, Damon asked to stop here first. Said there was something he needed to tell me before we went any further. The cemetery is peaceful. Old headstones dating back generations. Pack members who died in battles, from old age, from the normal dangers of being supernatural. And some who died because their Alpha was distracted. "Here." Damon stops in front of a simple marble stone. "Sarah Mitchell. Beloved mate, fierce warrior, taken too soon." The dates show she died three years ago. Age thirty-one. "She was beautiful," I say, looking at the engraved photo. Dark hair, bright smile, the kind of person

  • The Alpha's Last Choice   Chapter 32: Clara's Circle

Clara's POV"Turn left here. The hospital should be two blocks down."Damon's voice pulls me from the haze of pain that's been my constant companion for the last three hours. We're supposed to be driving to the coven, but I made Kael stop when I saw the sign for Mercy General. My old hospital. Where I used to work before my life became supernatural chaos."Clara, we don't have time for this," Kael says from the driver's seat. "The coven…""Five minutes. Please. I just need to see it one more time." Before I'm not human enough to walk through those doors. He parks in the visitor lot. It's 2 AM, so the main entrance is locked, but I know the staff entrance code. Some habits die hard.Inside, the familiar smell hits me…antiseptic, floor cleaner, and that indefinable scent of sickness and healing mixed together. I worked here for three years. Saved lives in these hallways."You okay?" Damon asks, staying close."Yeah. Just... nostalgic, I guess." I walk toward the ER, drawn by muscle memo

  • The Alpha's Last Choice   Chapter 31: The Waiting Approach

Clara's POV "You met with Marcus Bloodfang behind my back."Kael's voice is ice when I walk into his office. Damon stands by the window, looking guilty. So much for keeping it quiet."He had information I needed," I say, setting Margaret's journal and Marcus's documents on his desk."Information." Kael's laugh is bitter. "Is that what we're calling enemy propaganda now?""Read it." I push the journal toward him. "Margaret Chen figured out the truth seventy years ago. Your grandfather's mate. She knew Elara was sabotaging the bonding attempts.""Margaret died of cancer…""Caused by Elara's poison. It's all documented. Read it, Kael. Please."He opens the journal reluctantly. I watch his face change as he reads, confusion, then shock, then dawning horror."This can't be real," he whispers."Marcus had photographs. Records going back two centuries. The Thorne family has been ensuring every bonding attempt fails because they're terrified of what a successful human-wolf hybrid would becom

  • The Alpha's Last Choice   Chapter 30: Marcus Offer 2

Clara's POV "Kael will lose his mind if you go to Marcus…" "Then don't tell him until I'm already there." I reach the garage and grab keys to one of the SUVs. "I'm taking guards. Four of them. Marcus promised neutral ground and safe passage. If he breaks that promise, you'll know exactly where to find my body." Damon looks torn between tackling me and letting me go. "Four guards. Armed. And you wear a tracker." He pulls a small device from his pocket. "If anything goes wrong, we'll have a strike team there in five minutes." The abandoned church sits exactly on the border between territories. It's old, maybe a century, with broken stained glass windows and ivy crawling up stone walls. Beautiful in a haunted way. Marcus waits on the front steps, alone. He's not what I expected, older than Kael, maybe early forties, with salt-and-pepper hair and the kind of face that belongs in boardrooms, not battles. He wears an expensive suit like he's come from a business meeting. "Ms. Veyron

  • The Alpha's Last Choice   Chapter 29: Marcus's Offer 1

Clara's POV "Clara, breathe. Just breathe." Emma's voice comes through my phone as I hide behind the archive shelves, listening to Helena and her companion descend the stairs. My sister doesn't know about wolves or curses, but she knows panic when she hears it. "I can't… there's no way out…" "There's always a way out. You're a doctor. You've handled worse than this." Emma's practical voice cuts through my terror. "What's around you?" I force myself to look. Old shelves. Boxes. A ventilation grate near the ceiling. "Vent," I whisper. "But it's too high…" "Stack boxes. Move. Now." I shove my phone in my pocket and start moving boxes as quietly as possible. The footsteps pause on the stairs. "Did you hear something?" Helena asks. "Old building. Probably rats." I climb the makeshift tower of boxes, Margaret's journal tucked in my jacket. The vent cover is rusted but comes loose after precious seconds of pulling. I'm squeezing into the narrow space when my phone buzzes. Too lo
