The Council arrived just before dawn.

Elise stood near the edge of the training grounds, hands clenched into fists as the convoy of sleek black SUVs rolled in through the iron gates.

A procession of wolves in ceremonial uniforms stepped out first; warriors who were likely handpicked to escort the Elders.

Then came the Council.

Four figures cloaked in deep, forest-green robes, each with a silver sash draped across their shoulders, stepped out in unison.

The air grew colder, more tense.

Elise could feel the weight of their presence before they even spoke.

It wasn’t power she sensed—but judgment.

Kai moved to stand beside her. “You don’t have to face them alone,” he murmured.

She didn’t answer, eyes fixed on the group moving toward the main hall.

She knew she’d stutter if she answered.

She had to save her breath so as to not stutter when the council questioned her.

All the tears she grew up wolfless, the council didn’t care about her.

Now, she was still wolfless but with a glow, the

The words they had said, the judgements, the stares, the disapprovals all still lingered long after the Council left.By the time the sun had reached its peak, Elise sat alone on steps of the backyard at the packhouse, her fingers clenched tightly to the hem of her sweater. Her breath showed in the early morning air, though spring had technically arrived. She kept sighing in the cold which made her throat dry.She barely felt it. Not the air. Not the warmth of the day. Not the dryness of her throat.Nothing.She had become a ghost in her own story.Inside the packhouse, the Council had come together once again. Another meeting. Another door closed in her face. This time, they wanted to talk to “the truth wolves”. The thought of this made Elise’s stomach churn. She could hear the low hum of voices from the war room—Kai, Elder Kion, Marcellus, and others speaking in sharp husky tones. Occasionally, a voice would rise above the rest before falling silent again. They had been me

Elise sat alone on the wide stone steps of the packhouse, knees drawn to her chest. The night air stung her cheeks, but she barely noticed. She just sat there, staring out at the moon as if it could explain what had just happened. The wind carried the scent of blood and smoke, but it was the silence pressing down on her that hurt the most.Behind her, the packhouse buzzed with muffled voices, she didn’t blame them. They were as fearful and confused as she is.Even she has never seen anybody glow the way she was glowing.Inside the packhouse, she would have to see all the confused faces and she’d feel guilty about the fact that they’re all confused because of her.More so, most of them sustained injuries because of her. Because the shadowborns came for her.But out here, it was just her and the moonlight.Moonbreather.The word repeated in her mind like a song she couldn’t stop humming. Not wolf. Not human. Something else. Something ancient. Something none of them seemed to un

Elise couldn’t tear her gaze away. The figures moved like smoke, no footsteps, no words, just the rustle of cloaks too black for daylight. Each one was faceless, the hoods drawn so tightly they might as well have been carved from night itself. But the eyes; those pale, glinting eyes locked onto hers with chilling familiarity. From her dream. The same haunting stare. The same silence.Lucien’s arm slid in front of her like a shield. “Inside. Now.”But Elise remained rooted, breath coming in shallow bursts. Her body refused to obey.Kai stepped in, his voice a low growl. “Elise. Go.”The command in his tone finally snapped through her paralysis. She staggered back, grabbing onto Lucien’s sleeve as her legs moved on instinct. Around them, warriors were assembling, shifting, snarling, blades gleaming as the scent of tension thickened the air.But even with their numbers, something felt… off.The forest itself seemed to recoil.“Elise, come on.” Lucien guided her up the steps and thr

Elise stood on the front steps of the packhouse, her fingers clenched tightly around the hem of her jacket. The morning air was cold on her skin, but she barely noticed. Every part of her felt too warm, too exposed. She sighed, her breathe showing in the cold.Elder Kion was arriving today. And though she’d tried to convince herself she was ready, her nerves betrayed her. Her stomach churned, and her pulse rose.Kai had offered to wait with her, but she’d asked him not to. She didn’t want his comforting presence to mask her fear. She needed to face this on her own, even if it broke her.The packhouse had been polished until it gleamed. Guards stood at their posts awaiting the Elder of the pack. Even the air smelled different, it smelt sharp, metallic, like lightning before a storm. She didn’t have to wait long. The low growl of an engine drifted through the trees. A sleek, black car rolled down the path like a silent predator. Every one of the pack members was standing on the

Elise hadn’t slept well. After the strange peace she’d found in the focus circle, and the quiet moment with Kai by the riverbank, she’d expected rest to come easily. But the images that haunted her dreams weren’t her usual memories of the Thea’s sharp voice. Instead, she kept seeing that flicker of light again, the spark in her chest. The way it had ignited and then disappeared like smoke. And worse, she dreamed of eyes watching her from the forest. Cold, shadowed eyes that never blinked. This was a new type of dream and she felt scared. All her dreams were usually about somethijg that has happened, and now, this one was something that is yet to happen.By the time the day broke, Elise felt more exhausted than when she had closed her eyes. She rolled out of bed and paced across the room, splashing water on her face at the basin. As she stared into the mirror, she expected to see something different. Some glow in her eyes. A mark on her skin. But she looked the same; messy ha
