Helena

"No!!" Aspyn screams the instant the dagger sinks right into Graven's skull.

I cannot breathe for a second as I watch his blood bursting outward.

A sickening spray splashes across the stone floor, across the boots of the wolf-headed guards restraining him, and partly across the side of the blackwood desk itself.

Graven's body jerks once with horrifying force as he chokes on his own blood. Then he collapses between the beasts holding him upright.

The dagger remains lodged deep in his head

SeraI sit quietly at the edge of Aeron's bed with both hands clasped tightly together while servants move faintly beyond the corridor outside. The entire packhouse has become restless since the death of the servant girl. Everyone is a suspect now.My fingers drift unconsciously toward my stomach again. Is my child safe still there? I ask myself for the umpteenth time.A strange exhaustion weighs heavy through my body now. I cannot tell whether it comes from fear, the late hour, or the horrifying images still replaying endlessly in my mind.Every few seconds, I find myself listening to my own breathing as though expecting something inside me to suddenly feel wrong. The servant girl is dead, but I'm not. Why?The chamber doors open abruptly and Ketura enters. Her movements are hurried beneath the dark cloak thrown over her shoulders. A few strands of her silver-dark hair have escaped the braid resting against her back, and her face is drawn with concern as she reaches me."Sera," she g

Then he collapses between the beasts holding him upright. The dagger remains lodged deep in his head, but his eyes stay open.I look away as I feel my stomach tighten sharply. But I try to force every trace of discomfort away from my face. My fingers curl slowly against the armrest of my chair while I attempt to steady my expression into something colder.Lucian barely glances at the corpse. "Feed the corpse to the rogues."The two massive guards obey immediately. They drag Graven's lifeless body across the floor, leaving a dark smear of blood trailing behind him as they disappear into the dar

Helena"What do you mean?"Julian leans lazily against the edge of the blackwood desk, studying me with eyes far too calm for the cruelty unfolding around us."You're going to choose," he said in a conversational tone. Then he gestures lightly toward Graven. "Him? The man who helped reconnect you to your beloved sons."His eyes slid toward Aspyn, the expression on his face twisting faintly with irritation before he points at her as though she is something unpleasant dragged in from the dirt."Or her, the mere thing."Lucian exhales slowly beside him, his gaze remaining fixed on me."The choice is yours, Mother," he says in a quieter voice. "Consider this a gift we offer you. It's been a while."The word settle over the room like poison, and my throat tightens instantly.I slowly turn my head toward Aspyn. She is still being restrained by the wolf-headed creatures, her body trembling so badly that even her knees struggle to hold steady beneath her. I can see the tears that continously

HelenaFor several long seconds, no one moves. The fire lanterns hanging from the ceilings crackle softly above us while blood continues to spread steadily outward from the dead driver collapsed across the stone floor. The metallic scent thickens the air almost immediately, mixing horribly with thick smoke, wet fur, and the pungent animal musk clinging to the entire chamber.Aspyn remains on the ground trembling violently. Both her hands are pressed against her mouth as muffled sobs continue escaping her.But I barely hear any of it, as my eyes remain fixed in the two men before me.My own sons.Slowly, both of them sheath their swords almost at the same time. The sharp metallic sounds echo deeply through the chamber before silence settles again. Then they take a step toward me.The larger one reaches me first, his movements heavy and almost predatory despite the familiarity clawing through my chest at the sight of him. Up close, the difference between the boys I once loved beyond any

HelenaAspyn's grip around my arms tightens somewhat painfully as another enormous figure passes us carrying what looks disturbingly like the carcass of an unfortunate wild beast. The creature barely spares us a glance before disappearing into one of tents lit by roaring fire pits.I can practically feel Aspyn trembling beside me."Easy now," I murmur quietly, placing my hand over hers for a brief moment. "No harm comes to you unless it reaches me first."She turns toward me immediately, searching my face as though trying to desperately hold onto something steady within this monstrous place. Her breathing remains uneven, but she nods all the same.I smile faintly."Stay close," I tell her before continuing after the driver. The deeper we move into Grimward territory, the heavier the atmosphere around us becomes. Massive fires crackle violently against the cold night wind while beastly shadows continue to move endlessly beyond them.Everywhere I look, enormous yellow eyes gleam through

SeraThe moment I see the servant girl lying unmoving across the kitchen floor, my body reacts way before my mind catches up.I rush forward immediately and drop to my knees beside her, reaching quickly for her wrist. My fingers shake slightly as I desperately search for a pulse, but the moment I touch her properly, dread fully settles into me.The girl's skin is already growing cold beneath my fingertips.A faint bitter smell lingers around her mouth, and visible traces of dark red stain the corner of her lips and chin where wine must have spilled mixed with something far more terrible.I shut my eyes briefly as I say a parting word of prayer for her, then I slowly rise to my feet.Frightened servants continue to whisper amongst themselves while others stand frozen near the preparation tables. A young maid is crying openly now, her hand trembling violently over her mouth.I turn toward Aeron."She's gone," I say quietly.Aeron's jaw tighten instantly, even as his expression remain fr
