Willow
Large black gates sit in front of us. They are easily twenty feet tall, and looked like they were trying to keep people in as much as keep something out. Two black wolves sat either side of the gates.
I had never been to a pack where they would guard in their wolf form. It was off putting. Their sense of smell would be stronger. They would be faster too.
From the corner of my eye, I see the Alpha watching me. A smug smile on his face. He already knew I was planning on running. And he knew I had just encountered another problem.
The black wolves move to the car, sniffing all around. They pause by the door on my side and one stands on its hind legs to look in through the window at me. It’s brown eyes studying me for a moment.
“She’s mine.” Alpha Zane mutters as he winds down my window
“Mine? Who the hell do you think you are?!” I snap.
He grins as the wolves move back to their original position and the gates begin to open. Stevens restarts the car, creeping it through the opening gates.
Ahead, there are more wolves. Stationed either side of the road. They sit like statues, staring straight ahead.
“What’s the matter, little wolf?” I could hear the amusement in Alpha Zanes' tone.
I don’t answer because internally, I’m screaming. My odds were getting smaller and smaller by the second.
The road to the packhouse was long. Showing just how large his land was. We travel at least ten miles after the gates. The trees begin to fade and houses appear and then shops.
Most packs have their own forest, maybe a river passing through. Yet, shops, schools and anything else would often be shared. There would be neutral zones where people from different packs could hang out. But here, it was its own town. I guess they needed it with this many people.
“Anything you need can be found here.” Alpha Zane is telling me. “Clothes, food, jewellery, books. Whatever you like, we will have it here.”
I glare at him. Why would he think that would make me stay? I could get those things anywhere.
“What kind of things do you like?” His tone was much softer than it had been before. It makes me uneasy.
“None of your business.”
“If Stevens asked, would you answer him?”
I stare directly into his dark eyes. I knew my answer would piss him off.
“Yes.” It rolls off of my tongue with so much spite. I don’t turn away. I wanted him to see that I wasn’t afraid of him. That I wasn’t going to back down just because he was some Alpha.
“Stevens!” He mutters through gritted teeth.
Stevens dazzling blue eyes settle on me in the rearview mirror. “Willow,” He smiles. “Do you have any hobbies?”
I smile back at him. Purposely ignoring the Alpha next to me, even as his grip on my leg tightens. “I like to draw.”
“Was that really so hard?” Alpha Zane demands
“He didn’t demand the answer from me!”
“Is this what you were like, growing up? Always so short tempered. Always disrespecting those in charge?”
“Does a bear shit in the woods!?”
“What the fuck does that mean?” He snaps
“It’s her way of saying yes.” Stevens answers
I was expecting a slap. No one liked a smart ass. But if it means he changes his mind about owning me, then I was all for being a smart ass.
We come to a stop in front of a beautiful manor. Marble pillars sit at the entrance, framing the massive oak doors. Ivy creeps up the side, towards the roof and frames some of the upper floor windows.
For an unclaimed Alpha, it was not the type of house I expected him to live in.
Stevens opens the door for me. He winks at me as I reluctantly get out.
There are wolves stationed here too. They are almost frozen in place. The only thing that gave them away, is the blinking. I was yet to see anyone in human form.
“This way.” the Alpha calls out
As I move in front of the car. I see the grin on Alpha Zane’s face.
“Welcome to Night Watch.”
He holds his elbow out to me. I take it as I expand my lungs and walk up the stone steps with him.
The foyer is huge, with a staircase that splits in two only to meet again at the top. The cool marble floor was comforting on my bare feet. He doesn’t give me much of a chance to take it in. Instead he leads me to a room off to the left.
“Sit!” He points to the single chair that is sat in front of the desk. I assume it is the office.
Taking a seat behind the desk, he watches me. “This will be your home.”
“This is not my home!”
“This will be your new home.”
“This is not my home!” I state again. It didn’t matter how many times he said it, this would never be my home.
Looking over my shoulder, I expected to see Stevens, but the Alpha and I are alone.
“Thinking about running?” He muses
“Not right now.”
He cocks a brow at me, “You are making this a lot harder than it has to be.”
“Good.” I smile at him. “What’s the point in life if everything is easy?”
I expected him to respond, but again, he stares at me in silence and starts unbuttoning his shirt. Black ink appears in the shape of a dragon. As he removes his shirt, I see how it takes up his entire chest, wrapping around to his back. He hangs his shirt on the back of his chair and moves around to me.
“Don’t touch me!” I growl. Though I needed him to move a few inches closer and then I would be able to give him a swift kick in the balls.
He keeps the distance, almost as if knows what I will do. He leans back against the table. “Was it your fathers death that made you so angry?”
I feel a twitch in my upper lip. “You don’t get to ask me questions about him.”
His eyes narrowed at me, he had figured out something about me.
“Was it that he was a disgraced Alpha or the fact he put the rest of your family in danger?
“Shut up!”
He rubs through the stubble of his chin. “You lost your pack.” He presses
I jump to my feet, my fists balled at my side. “Shut the fuck up.”
“You lost the chance at becoming an Alpha because of your father’s bad habits.”
Tears burn my retinas. I wanted it to stop, but he keeps pushing.
“He put you, your mother and your little brother in the line of fire.”
I couldn’t look at him. I had spent months pushing it all deep down inside of me.
“Because of him, you ended up in an auction house, being paraded around by fucking humans.”
“STOP TALKING!” I charge at him, slamming my fists against his chest. He stands there, letting me hit him, letting me burn through my anger.
As I break, his arms lock around me. “Everything will be different now, little wolf.”
WillowIt takes me a few minutes to pull myself together. I wasn’t someone who cried. I preferred to push all my feelings down until I could no longer feel them. Yet he dragged it out of me so fucking easily?Pushing away from him, I lower my face, waiting for the tears to stop as I try to force everything back in.He doesn’t speak yet I feel his dark eyes on me, roaming my body as he decides his next move.“Can I get some water?” I murmur, suddenly feeling claustrophobic and hoping he would let me out of this stuffy office.“Of course.”What I didn’t expect was for him to have a mini fridge in his office. He really meant it when he said he wasn’t letting me out of his sight. From the corner of my eye, I watch him pour water into a glass. He hands it to me without speaking another word.Sipping it silently, I was trying to decide whether I should lob it at his head. For now, I decide against it. He was an Alpha, he would heal in no time and I would just make my life ten times more dif
ZaneIt’s quiet when I turn the water off. I knew she hadn’t left. There was no way out of the bedroom without a key and I had it.As I get closer to the door, I hear the subtle sounds of pencil scratching on paper. She sits at the desk with one leg folded up on the chair, her arm wrapped around it as she concentrates. She had pulled her blonde hair back into a loose bun at the bottom of her neck and seemed oblivious to me watching her.Half the packets of pencils had been torn open, the boxes discarded on the floor along with many of the sketchbooks. Her shoulders aren’t so tense and from here I could see a corner of her lip curved up into a smile. The first natural smile I had seen since I laid my eyes on her. I could see why they wanted big money for her at the auction. I had done since I first laid eyes on her.***Stevens and I had been on our way to a meeting when I caught her scent. It wasn’t like anything I had smelt before. Strong cinnamon and I had to find her. There was no
WillowKeep it together, just keep it together.I keep my gaze on the window, feeling Zanes' dark eyes burn into the back of my head. I remember my dads words from when I was a kid. “If a wolf wants to claim you as a mate. Don’t fight it. It will be the better option.”Don’t fight it? Did he really think I was going to lay down and a let a wolf fuck me through life?Zane hadn’t spoken since he had told me that he wouldn’t let me go. I feel him move around behind me. Each movement echoing in my head, waiting for him to put his hands on me again. This time he doesn’t and when I catch a glimpse of his reflection in the window, he is sitting on the bed pulling on his black Timberlands. Not even bothering to watch me.“I have a meeting.” He mutters, standing up to full height. The black jeans and shirt fit him perfectly. They also made him look as though he could disappear in the dark. But they didn't exactly scream 'meeting'.I turn in the chair to look at him. “You are making me go with
Willow“You needed sleep and it was the only way I could be sure of it.” He mutters, unphased by my reaction. “And,” He adds with a smile, “this way, I knew you couldn’t do something stupid and try to run.”I was speechless. If he thought it was so easy to drug me, then what else was he capable of?My thighs clamp together and his eyes shift to the movement under the comforter. “Don’t worry, little wolf, I haven’t touched you, yet. But one day you will be begging me too.”He moves from the chair revealing a plate of breakfast pastries. I’m not going to lie, they look delicious, but what if he has drugged them too? What if this was his plan to make sure I stay here?“They haven’t been touched.” He mutters, like he could read my mind, which only makes me frown. We could both hear my stomach growling, but still, I stay rooted to the bed. I was used to going without food now and again. The grumbling stomach didn’t bother me, I had heard it much louder than it is now.“Eat.” He moves to an
Willow A distraction. He was trying to stop me from jumping. Dragging me in with his stupid questions. Of course I haven’t figured it out, I wouldn’t have asked him otherwise. I edge forwards, holding on to the window frame as the broken glass slices the soles of my feet. “Willow! Don’t test me.” The words come out in a low growl. I glance back at his onyx eyes. Looking into the black holes that stare back at me. He was showing his anger. He wanted me to see it. A warning that if I do anything stupid, a punishment was coming my way. Being here was already punishment enough. “Get your ass down, NOW!” His patience is running thin. I turn in the window to face him properly. Purposely letting the glass pierce my feet. My warm blood slowly drips from my feet, spreading out all along the windowsill. His eyes move down to my injured feet. I watch him shake his head as he steps to me. Grabbing my hips, he lifts me like I’m nothing more than a feather. Carrying me to the bed, he sits me
ZaneShe is infuriating. If I hadn’t left the room, I may have done something that I would have spent my life regretting.I leave the door unlocked and walk away. If she wanted to run, she could try but I guarantee she won’t make it out of the house before I find her.“Going well?” Stevens asks with a raised brow as I head downstairs. He is sitting in the chair outside my office. “Are you waiting for me?”“There have been some requests made by the warriors.” He holds up a notebook. “Just want to run them past you.”He follows me into the office and starts to close the door. “Leave it open.” If Willow was going to try and make a run for it, I was going to make it as difficult as possible.“She really puts you in a bad mood, doesn’t she?” He smirks at me“It’s the attitude.”“I would never have guessed.” He laughs to himself. “She smashed a window.” I mutter, “and threatened to jump. She didn’t even react when the glass was cutting into her feet, and she was purposely standing on it.
WillowShit. Fuck. Shit.I didn’t have much time. I didn’t even know if I would make it out of the house. I had to try. He left the door open. His mistake.I had nothing other than the clothes on my back and the bandages on my feet, but it doesn’t stop me.Keeping my eyes in front, I refuse to look back. It was clearly the reason I fell in the forest and I wasn’t making that mistake again.Jumping the final few steps, I land painfully on my feet and let out the tiniest whimper when I hear my name roared from upstairs.Making a beeline for the front door, I rip it open, feeling the rush of warm air. Wolves were scattered everywhere and my heart plummets. Somehow, I had forgotten about them. Still, I don’t stop, letting my feet pound the driveway as wolves charge after me.I could feel them, close on my heels. Centimetres away from locking their jaws around my ankles. Though not once do I hear a snap or a snarl. It takes a few more minutes to realise what they are doing. They aren’t ch
WillowI don’t try to escape again, not yet anyway. I will, but I need to get my timings right. I barely had minutes and I needed to find a way to get out without the wolves tracking me.Each day Zane pushes a little more, trying to get answers from me. The silent treatment made him angry and he often stormed from the bedroom, locking the door behind him. Sometimes, in that moment of frustration, a smile would sneak on to my face because it was getting harder and harder for him to hide his anger. For an entire week he redressed my feet daily, carefully inspecting the wounds. Not once did I mutter a word of gratitude. I know I should, but does the man who is holding me captive deserve it?On the seventh day, he doesn’t rewrap my feet after inspecting them. He rises to his full height. “Put your shoes on.”“I prefer….”“I don’t care. Put your shoes on.”There was something different about his tone. Darker, more sinister. And if my stomach wasn’t already tying itself in knots, it certai
