Chapter 19

I was able to make my petitions to the King, who was pausing and sparing time to each and every subject, as I watched, through the window glass, the trampled snow coating the courtyard that was speckled with all different kinds of people. These people, whether they were wealthy or poor, ladies or maidens, widows or others who had problems, could all make their requests to the King.

The temperature was so low that the crowd was shivering. However, in contrast to the biting severity, the challenges of their daily lives and the necessity of submitting pleas to their Majesty seemed more essential.

To tell you the truth, if I had never come here, I probably would have no idea how taxing the life of a King could be. Because he would always be busy and have such large amounts of work to complete, any king's day would be a chaotic and disorganized one from start to finish. Despite the fact that it was just about petitions and enquiries, I found it to be more difficult.
