Mag-log inThe dining room was huge with a table that could fit twenty people. Only four chairs were set. Ivy sat down where a woman told her to across from a chair with a name card that said DAMON in small letters. Elena was next to her wearing a sweater and staring at her coffee.
Kade was not there yet. Ivy tried not to notice how empty the room felt without him. She could not help it.
Elena asked her "Did you sleep well?" Her voice was flat like she did not really care.
Ivy said, "I slept fine " even though it was not true. They both knew it was not true. Neither of them said anything about it.
Elena said, "You will get used to the house. It is big at first. Everyone says that." She looked at Ivy taking in her hair, sweater and the coffee stain on her sleeve. "Kade had this part of the house fixed up for you. He even picked out the bed sheets himself I heard."
Ivy said, "I did not know that."
Elena said, "No you would not have."
Then a man came in. He was younger than Kade, with a scar above his eyebrow and a tray of coffee. He set it down. Said, "You are the one everyone is talking about. My name is Rhys. I am in charge of security around here."
Ivy said, "I am Ivy."
Rhys said, "I know. Everyone in the house knows." He. Sat down next to her. "Do not let Elena scare you. She does that to everyone."
Elena said, "I only do that to people who deserve it " and went back to her coffee.
Ivy thought she liked Rhys. Then she decided not to trust him too much not yet.
Rhys said, "So how was night?" He leaned in like he was sharing a secret.
Ivy said, "It was strange."
Rhys said, " good or strange bad?"
Ivy said, "I do not know yet."
Rhys looked at her like he was trying to figure her out. Ivy felt like he was pretending to be casual. Really he was trying to get information out of her.
He said, "People are talking. About how it happened. The first time and already—"
Elena cut him off her voice sharp. "Rhys, not at the table."
He held up his hands. Smiled. "I was just making conversation."
Elena said, "Talk about the weather."
Ivy looked at them feeling like there was tension in the air. She filed the moment away like she did with all the things she did not understand about this house.
Kade found her in the library an hour later. She was staring at a book. Not really reading it.
He said, "You skipped the rest of breakfast."
Ivy said, "Elena and Rhys had a moment. I thought it was a time to leave."
Kades eyes tightened. "What kind of moment?"
Ivy said, "Rhys said people were talking. About how it took. Then Elena shut him up before he could finish."
Kade was quiet for a time. Ivys stomach started to feel sick
He said, "There is a test. It checks if you are compatible with the ritual. Sometimes it shows something."
Ivy said, "You told me that already. You did not finish explaining it."
Kade said, "It is called a mate flag. It does not happen often. Most alphas never get one in their lives."
Ivys mouth felt dry. ". Mine did."
Kade said, "Yes."
Ivy said, "When did you find out?"
Kade did not answer away. Ivy could tell that he was hiding something.
He said, "The day I met you. At the clinic. Before we spoke."
Ivy felt a feeling in her chest. "You knew before I signed anything. Before any of this happened."
Kade said, "Yes."
Ivy said, "You let me sign a contract to be a surrogate of telling me the truth."
Kade said, "The contract was real. The money is real. I needed you to choose this because you needed the money not because I told you some story about fate that you could not verify."
Ivy said, "That was not your decision to make."
Kade said, "I know. I made it anyway. I will live with it if it was wrong."
Ivy stood up feeling like she needed to move. "Does the mate flag change anything? Does it mean the ritual works differently?"
Kade said, "It means it took faster than it should have. Usually one time is enough for a flagged pair.. For someone who is not flagged it might take more times."
Ivy said, "So I am probably pregnant."
Kade said, "We will not know for sure for another week or two.. Probably."
Ivy looked at him feeling many things at once.
She said, "I need some air " and left before he could say anything
She found the gardens of air. They were behind the wing with roses that should not have been blooming that late in the year and a bench that looked like nobody used it.
She was not alone for long.
A man came to the archway leaning against it with ease. He had hair like Kades but sharper features and a smile that seemed too fast.
He said, "You look like you have had a morning. I am Damon, Kades cousin. I would have introduced myself at breakfast. I hear I missed the excitement."
Ivy said, "Word travels fast in this house."
Damon said, "It is a group with not much to do." He walked over to the bench. Sat down next to her. "I bet Kade has been very polite to you. He is good at being polite. Not always good at being honest."
Ivy said, "You are his cousin."
Damon said, "For now ". Smiled again. Ivy felt like there was something under his smile that she could not name something that seemed dangerous but also charming.
He said, "I hope you are settling in. I really do. Whatever happens between now and the solstice I would hate for you to feel like a pawn, in it."
Ivy said, "Am I a pawn?"
Damon said that depends on what Kade decides to tell you. He stood up. Brushed his sleeve like he was getting rid of dust that was not even there. I would keep asking Kade questions if I were you. Kade is better at answering questions than he seems to be.
He walked away the way he came very calmly and Ivy was left alone in the garden. The garden had roses that should not have been blooming at that time. Her cousin Kade had not said anything that sounded scary. Somehow Ivy felt more nervous, than when she found out about the werewolf.
The pack's legal counsel confirmed it within an hour — a junior associate, new to the firm handling the Ashgrove land transfers, had needed a placeholder name for the shell company and pulled it straight from a briefing document without understanding what the word actually meant to anyone involved."An honest mistake," Kade said, pacing the length of his study while Ivy sat curled in the armchair by the window, Rowan asleep against her shoulder. "That's almost worse than sabotage. At least sabotage would mean someone was paying close enough attention to be dangerous on purpose.""Careless mistakes are dangerous too," Odalys said from the doorway, where she'd arrived within the hour of getting Kade's call, expression grim. "Perhaps more dangerous. Sabotage can be traced to a motive. This was simply bad luck wearing the shape of a bureaucratic form.""Can we fix it? Rename the company, bury the old filing?""We can try," Rhys said, laptop open on the desk, already three tabs deep into c
Sarah Chen didn't look like Ivy expected. Younger, for one thing, maybe thirty, with a canvas bag over one shoulder and the kind of patient, watchful calm that seemed more dangerous than any aggression could have been."Mr. Voss." She offered a hand at the gate, and Kade shook it, easy and controlled, nothing in his face betraying the tension Ivy could feel radiating off him even from ten feet back. "Thank you for seeing me. I know it's unusual, showing up like this.""You said land use. My assistant mentioned county permits." Kade's voice was smooth, unbothered, a tone Ivy hadn't heard from him since the council hearing. "I'm happy to answer questions, though I confess I'm curious why a reporter drove two hours out for what sounds like a fairly dry municipal story.""Dry stories sometimes turn into interesting ones." Sarah's eyes moved past him, briefly, taking in the house, the grounds, cataloging something Ivy couldn't guess at. "I've been tracking a pattern of land acquisitions in
Dani arrived Saturday morning, overnight bag in one hand, deep suspicion written all over her face the second she stepped out of her car and got a good look at the compound's gate."Okay," she said, staring up at twelve feet of iron like it might start talking to her. "This is either a cult or a cartel, and I need you to tell me which one before I walk through that gate.""Neither," Ivy said, hugging her tight. "It's actually so much stranger than either of those."She told her everything on the back porch that afternoon, Rowan napping upstairs, Kade sitting close but letting Ivy carry the story herself. The clinic. The change. The full moon and the bond and the succession fight and the Ashgrove reveal, all of it, laid out plain the way she wished someone had laid it out for her, three weeks before her whole life turned into something out of a folktale.Dani didn't say anything for a long time after Ivy finished. She just stared at the roses, jaw working, processing in the particular
Dani called on a Tuesday afternoon, voice tight in a way Ivy hadn't heard from her since before any of this started."I need to ask you something," Dani said, "and I need you to actually answer me this time instead of giving me the vague version."Ivy shifted Rowan onto her hip, heart already sinking. "Okay.""A reporter came by my work today. Asking questions about you. About some kind of 'incident' out near where you moved. Animal attacks, unexplained hospital transfers, a security firm buying up land permits under three different shell names." Dani's voice dropped lower. "Ivy, she had photos. Blurry ones, night-vision, something big in the trees near a stone wall. She asked if I knew anything about the Voss family. I said no. I don't know if she believed me."Ivy's stomach dropped straight through the floor."Did she leave a card? A name?""Sarah Chen. Independent journalist, apparently working on something bigger than one weird sighting. She said she's been pulling records for alm
The baby came three weeks early, on a night without a full moon at all, which Ivy would later decide felt exactly right — proof that some things in her life could finally happen on nobody's schedule but her own.She labored for eleven hours in the private wing Kade had built for her that very first week, back when she'd thought this whole arrangement was just a business deal with strange terms attached. Margaret sat on one side of the bed, gripping her hand tight enough to bruise. Kade stayed on the other, steady through every hour of it, murmuring something low and constant that Ivy only half understood but held onto anyway."You're doing so well," Margaret kept saying, tears streaking a face that had gotten stronger every week since the truth came out, since the medicine started working better, since she'd stopped having to pretend she didn't know what her daughter had married into. "Almost there, sweetheart. Almost there."When the baby finally came, the whole room went quiet for o
Thorne agreed to meet two days later, on neutral ground at the edge of Voss territory, a clearing chosen because it belonged to neither pack and both at once.Ivy stood beside Kade and Odalys, security spread wide but not crowding close, and watched Thorne walk into the clearing flanked by four of his own people. He was younger than Ivy expected, sharp-eyed, carrying himself with the same restless energy she'd felt in Corin the night he'd broken into her mother's house."You came," Thorne said, eyes moving over the three of them, lingering longest on Ivy. "Braver than I expected, coming to me instead of hiding behind Voss walls.""I'm not hiding from anything," Ivy said. "I came because this is my choice to make, not something to be decided around me by people who've never actually asked what I want.""And what do you want?""Peace," Ivy said simply. "Between my bloodlines, both of them. Not a war fought over me like I'm territory to be claimed."Thorne's jaw tightened. "Ashgrove was
