Ivy stayed away from Kade for the rest of the day.

She walked the gardens twice. She ate lunch alone in her room. She told herself she wasn't hiding, and she knew that was a lie the whole time she was thinking it.

By evening, she was tired of her own company. She went down to the kitchen instead, hoping for tea and no conversation. She got the tea. She did not get the quiet.

Kade was already there.

He sat at the small table by the window, not the big dining room, just him and a mug of coffee gone cold in his hands. He looked up when she came in and didn't say anything at first. That was new. He always had something to say.

"I can go," Ivy said.

"You don't have to."

She stood in the doorway a moment, then sat down across from him anyway. Some part of her still wanted to hear what he had to say, even after this morning. Even angry.

"I've been thinking about what you told me," she said. "About the mate flag. About knowing, before I ever signed anything."

"I figured."

"I'm still angry."

"You should be." He turned the mug in his hands, slow, like it helped him think. "I've run this pack alone for a long time, Ivy. I make choices for people without asking them first. It's how I stayed alive this long. It's a bad habit when it comes to you, and I know that now, but I don't know how to just turn it off."

"That's not really an apology."

"No," he said. "It isn't. I don't think I know how to give you a real one yet. I've never had to."

Ivy almost smiled at that, which annoyed her more than anything else he'd said all day.

"Tell me something true," she said. "Something you haven't told me yet. No more waiting for the perfect moment."

Kade was quiet for a second. Then he set the mug down.

"My parents died in this house," he said. "Not far from where you're sleeping. There was a fight for the alpha seat, and they lost it, and I was the one who found them after. I was sixteen. I became alpha three days later, because the pack needed someone standing, and I was the only one left standing."

Ivy hadn't expected that. The anger in her chest made room for something else, something softer, before she could stop it.

"I'm sorry," she said.

"I don't tell people that story. Elena knows. Damon knows, because he was there. Nobody else." He looked at her, and for once his face didn't have any walls up at all. "I'm telling you because you asked for something true, and that's the truest thing I have."

"Why me?"

"I don't fully know," Kade said. "Maybe the bond. Maybe just you. I stopped trying to separate the two a few days ago."

Something warm moved through Ivy's chest, the same warm ache from the clearing, quieter now but still there, still real. She wanted to be angry. She was still angry. But the anger had a harder time holding its shape with him looking at her like that.

"I'm not ready to forgive you," she said. "I need you to know that."

"I'm not asking you to. Not yet." A small, tired smile. "I just wanted you to know the whole truth, even the parts that don't help my case."

Ivy's phone rang.

She almost let it go to voicemail. Almost. Then she saw the name on the screen — her mother's home aide — and her stomach dropped straight through the floor.

"Hello?"

"Ivy, it's Carla." The aide's voice was fast, tight, the kind of fast that meant bad news trying to get out before it lost its nerve. "I don't want to scare you. Your mom had a hard afternoon. Her breathing got bad, worse than usual, and we called the ambulance. She's at the hospital now. She's stable, but the doctor wants to talk to you as soon as you can call back."

The room tilted a little. Ivy stood up without deciding to.

"Is she okay? Carla, is she—"

"She's stable," Carla said again, softer this time. "But I think you should come, if you can. Soon."

Ivy hung up and looked at Kade, who was already on his feet, already reading her face before she'd said a single word about what had happened.

"It's my mom," Ivy said. "I need to go home. Right now."

"Then we go right now," Kade said, and for the first time since she'd walked into that clinic four days ago, there was no hesitation in his voice at all.

Behind him, in the hallway, Elena stood frozen in the doorway with her hand still raised where she'd been about to knock. She'd clearly heard every word.

"You can't leave," Elena said. "Not tonight. Not with the moon three days out and half the pack expecting—"

"Watch me," Kade said, and walked straight past her, already reaching for his coat, already pulling out his phone to call for the car.

Elena's eyes found Ivy's over his shoulder, and for the first time since Ivy had arrived at this house, the cold mask slipped just enough to show something underneath it. It looked, for half a second, almost like fear.

"You have no idea what you're about to walk into," Elena said, quiet, only for Ivy to hear. "Neither of you do."

The pack's legal counsel confirmed it within an hour — a junior associate, new to the firm handling the Ashgrove land transfers, had needed a placeholder name for the shell company and pulled it straight from a briefing document without understanding what the word actually meant to anyone involved."An honest mistake," Kade said, pacing the length of his study while Ivy sat curled in the armchair by the window, Rowan asleep against her shoulder. "That's almost worse than sabotage. At least sabotage would mean someone was paying close enough attention to be dangerous on purpose.""Careless mistakes are dangerous too," Odalys said from the doorway, where she'd arrived within the hour of getting Kade's call, expression grim. "Perhaps more dangerous. Sabotage can be traced to a motive. This was simply bad luck wearing the shape of a bureaucratic form.""Can we fix it? Rename the company, bury the old filing?""We can try," Rhys said, laptop open on the desk, already three tabs deep into c

Sarah Chen didn't look like Ivy expected. Younger, for one thing, maybe thirty, with a canvas bag over one shoulder and the kind of patient, watchful calm that seemed more dangerous than any aggression could have been."Mr. Voss." She offered a hand at the gate, and Kade shook it, easy and controlled, nothing in his face betraying the tension Ivy could feel radiating off him even from ten feet back. "Thank you for seeing me. I know it's unusual, showing up like this.""You said land use. My assistant mentioned county permits." Kade's voice was smooth, unbothered, a tone Ivy hadn't heard from him since the council hearing. "I'm happy to answer questions, though I confess I'm curious why a reporter drove two hours out for what sounds like a fairly dry municipal story.""Dry stories sometimes turn into interesting ones." Sarah's eyes moved past him, briefly, taking in the house, the grounds, cataloging something Ivy couldn't guess at. "I've been tracking a pattern of land acquisitions in

Dani arrived Saturday morning, overnight bag in one hand, deep suspicion written all over her face the second she stepped out of her car and got a good look at the compound's gate."Okay," she said, staring up at twelve feet of iron like it might start talking to her. "This is either a cult or a cartel, and I need you to tell me which one before I walk through that gate.""Neither," Ivy said, hugging her tight. "It's actually so much stranger than either of those."She told her everything on the back porch that afternoon, Rowan napping upstairs, Kade sitting close but letting Ivy carry the story herself. The clinic. The change. The full moon and the bond and the succession fight and the Ashgrove reveal, all of it, laid out plain the way she wished someone had laid it out for her, three weeks before her whole life turned into something out of a folktale.Dani didn't say anything for a long time after Ivy finished. She just stared at the roses, jaw working, processing in the particular

Dani called on a Tuesday afternoon, voice tight in a way Ivy hadn't heard from her since before any of this started."I need to ask you something," Dani said, "and I need you to actually answer me this time instead of giving me the vague version."Ivy shifted Rowan onto her hip, heart already sinking. "Okay.""A reporter came by my work today. Asking questions about you. About some kind of 'incident' out near where you moved. Animal attacks, unexplained hospital transfers, a security firm buying up land permits under three different shell names." Dani's voice dropped lower. "Ivy, she had photos. Blurry ones, night-vision, something big in the trees near a stone wall. She asked if I knew anything about the Voss family. I said no. I don't know if she believed me."Ivy's stomach dropped straight through the floor."Did she leave a card? A name?""Sarah Chen. Independent journalist, apparently working on something bigger than one weird sighting. She said she's been pulling records for alm

The baby came three weeks early, on a night without a full moon at all, which Ivy would later decide felt exactly right — proof that some things in her life could finally happen on nobody's schedule but her own.She labored for eleven hours in the private wing Kade had built for her that very first week, back when she'd thought this whole arrangement was just a business deal with strange terms attached. Margaret sat on one side of the bed, gripping her hand tight enough to bruise. Kade stayed on the other, steady through every hour of it, murmuring something low and constant that Ivy only half understood but held onto anyway."You're doing so well," Margaret kept saying, tears streaking a face that had gotten stronger every week since the truth came out, since the medicine started working better, since she'd stopped having to pretend she didn't know what her daughter had married into. "Almost there, sweetheart. Almost there."When the baby finally came, the whole room went quiet for o

Thorne agreed to meet two days later, on neutral ground at the edge of Voss territory, a clearing chosen because it belonged to neither pack and both at once.Ivy stood beside Kade and Odalys, security spread wide but not crowding close, and watched Thorne walk into the clearing flanked by four of his own people. He was younger than Ivy expected, sharp-eyed, carrying himself with the same restless energy she'd felt in Corin the night he'd broken into her mother's house."You came," Thorne said, eyes moving over the three of them, lingering longest on Ivy. "Braver than I expected, coming to me instead of hiding behind Voss walls.""I'm not hiding from anything," Ivy said. "I came because this is my choice to make, not something to be decided around me by people who've never actually asked what I want.""And what do you want?""Peace," Ivy said simply. "Between my bloodlines, both of them. Not a war fought over me like I'm territory to be claimed."Thorne's jaw tightened. "Ashgrove was
