Mary Ann

The cheers and howls from the ceremony still echoed in my ears as the reception spilled into the grand clearing behind the ceremonial grounds. Lanterns hung from the trees, casting a golden glow over long tables heavy with food and drink. Music played—soft drums and strings that should have felt celebratory. Instead, everything felt hollow.

Modric disappeared almost immediately after the vows.

One moment his arm was tense under my fingers as we walked back down the aisle, the next he was gone, melting into the crowd with a muttered excuse about pack business. I stood there alone near the head table, my beautiful lace gown suddenly feeling too tight, too exposed. My wolf whined inside me, still buzzing from that corner-of-the-lips kiss and the electric spark that had passed between us. But my husband? Nowhere to be seen.

Guests whispered behind my back. I could hear the murmurs even as I pretended not to.

“…plus-size Luna for Ironclaw? Bold choice.”

“Modric must be furious. Poor Velvera…”

“She’s pretty enough, I suppose, but can you imagine her running with the pack?”

I kept my spine straight, forcing a small smile as I sipped from a glass of champagne. My curves filled out the gown in all the ways I usually loved—soft hips, full breasts, the gentle swell of my belly but tonight every glance felt like judgment. I smoothed my hands down the fabric, reminding myself I had survived worse. Still, the loneliness clawed at me. This was supposed to be a celebration of our union, yet here I was, the bride standing by herself while the groom vanished.

I stared at the dancing couples, their laughter floating on the night air, and tried to ignore the ache in my chest. This is your life now, Mary Ann. Get used to it.

A shadow fell across my vision. A hand extended toward me, palm up.

“May I have this dance?”

I looked up. Kylian. Modric’s Beta and best friend since childhood. Tall and broad like most Ironclaw wolves, with warm brown hair and sharp hazel eyes. I remembered him instantly always right there in the background at the Elite Alpha Academy, laughing loudest whenever Modric called me “Fat Luna.” One of the boys who had turned my school years into a nightmare.

My wolf perked up cautiously, but I felt nothing but old pain. I stared at his offered hand like it might bite me.

“I have no reason to like you,” I said bluntly, my voice low but steady. No point in pretending. This was my wedding night, and I was done playing nice.

Kylian didn’t flinch. He lowered his hand slightly but didn’t pull away, his expression softening with something that looked like genuine regret. “I know. And you’re right. I don’t deserve even a minute of your time, Luna.”

The title sounded strange coming from him. I raised an eyebrow, waiting.

He stepped a little closer, voice sincere. “We were cruel teenagers. Stupid, arrogant assholes who thought tearing someone down made us stronger. Modric especially… but I laughed right along with him. I’m sorry, Mary Ann. Truly. We hurt you, and you didn’t deserve any of it. None of us were man enough to see how strong and kind you already were back then.”

I searched his face for mockery, but there was none. Just honest remorse. My throat tightened. Years of bottled-up hurt pressed against my eyes, but I refused to cry here in front of everyone.

“You’re beautiful,” he continued quietly. “You always were. The way you carried yourself, the way you never let us fully break you… you deserved so much better than what we gave. I hope this pack treats you right. You deserve to be cherished.”

The words landed soft and unexpected, warming something cold inside me. I hesitated only a second before placing my hand in his. “One dance. And don’t call me beautiful just to be polite.”

He smiled faintly, leading me onto the dance floor. “Not polite. Truth.”

Kylian was a good dancer, confident but gentle, guiding me with a hand at my waist that respected the space I needed. My full figure moved with the music, the skirt of my gown swirling around my legs. For the first time that night, I didn’t feel quite so alone. We didn’t talk much, but the silence wasn’t uncomfortable. My wolf relaxed a fraction, and I let myself breathe.

Then a deep, furious voice cut through the music like a blade.

“May I dance with my wife?”

I turned in Kylian’s arms to find Modric standing there, tall and imposing in his black suit, his gray eyes blazing as he glared at his Beta. His jaw was clenched tight, shoulders rigid with tension. The air between the two men crackled, and I felt that same electric spark from the ceremony flare to life again just from being near him.

My heart stuttered. He had finally returned and he looked anything but happy to see me in another man’s arms.

Mary Ann’s POVOne year later. There were children in my garden.Six of them.Possibly seven. They moved too quickly for me to count properly.“Stop running near the fountain!”Nobody listened.I lowered my paintbrush and stared through the open doors of my studio.A little girl darted past carrying a wooden sword while two boys chased her.“I am Alpha!” she shouted.“You can’t be Alpha!” one boy yelled.“Why?”“Because I am!”“You can both be Alpha,” another child suggested.“No!”I smiled.Apparently, political reform had not reached children’s games yet.My studio occupied most of the greenhouse Modric and I had argued about the morning after our second wedding.I had won.Obviously.The eastern side remained a proper greenhouse, filled with wildflowers, herbs, and several plants Greta insisted would die because I forgot to water them. She was correct about three. The western side was mine.Large windows.Canvases.Paint.Shelves filled with brushes.Finished and unfinished pieces

Mary Ann’s POVSeveral months later.Modric hated the northern cliffs. Not because they were ugly. Not because the journey had been difficult. Not even because I had forced him to leave Ironclaw for an entire week without allowing him to turn the trip into an unofficial inspection of neighboring packs. He hated the wind.“This is unreasonable.”I continued painting.Modric stood several feet behind me with his coat pulled tightly around his body.I smiled.“What is unreasonable?”“The weather.”“It is beautiful.”“It is trying to kill us.”I looked toward the sea.The northern cliffs were exactly as I had imagined them.Perhaps better.Dark rock stretched along the coastline in both directions. Far below us, enormous waves crashed against the cliff walls, leaving white foam across the black stones. The sky was pale. The sea seemed endless.Wild grass covered the land behind us, bending beneath the constant wind.Beautiful.Wild.Free.I dipped my brush into blue paint.“You are a were

Modric’s POVI woke before Mary Ann.For several seconds, I did not move.Morning light slipped through the curtains, falling across the bed and the woman sleeping beside me.My wife. The word should not have felt new.Mary Ann had legally been my wife for a long time. But this morning, it did.She was lying on her stomach, her face turned toward me, one hand beneath the pillow and the other resting between us. Her hair was everywhere.I smiled. Then memory arrived. Our first wedding morning.I had not woken beside her.I had not even slept in the Luna Wing.I had spent our wedding night with Velvera.By morning, Mary Ann had been alone in a bed prepared for two people.I remembered returning later.I remembered avoiding her eyes.I remembered behaving as though she was the inconvenience. The memory hit hard enough that the bond shifted.Mary Ann stirred.I immediately forced myself away from the past. Not today.I was not going to turn our first morning after the second wedding into

Mary Ann’s POVOur first wedding reception had felt like a council meeting with music.Everyone had watched everyone else.Ironclaw had watched Mooncrest.Mooncrest had watched Ironclaw. The elders had watched Modric and me as though every glance between us needed to confirm that the alliance was working.I had spent most of that night wondering whether my new husband wanted to escape. He had.Tonight, my husband was trying to stop Kylian from telling three packs about the first time he attempted to court me.“And then,” Kylian announced, raising his glass, “our mighty Alpha spent nearly forty minutes choosing a book.”The garden erupted with laughter.I covered my face.Modric stood beside me.“Kylian.”Kylian ignored him.“He had survived assassination attempts.”“Kylian.”“Political rebellions.”“Kylian.”“Silver poisoning.”“That was not me.”“Not relevant.”More laughter.Kylian pointed dramatically toward Modric.“But put this man inside a library and tell him he needs to choose

Modric’s POV“Entirely.”One word. That was all Mary Ann said.Yet somehow it affected me more than any vow from our first wedding.Entirely.She was here because she wanted to be.Not because Mooncrest needed an alliance. Not because Ironclaw needed stability. Not because a seer had spoken. Not because the mate bond demanded anything. She had walked half the aisle alone, stopped in front of me, and chosen me.My eyes burned again.Mary Ann noticed immediately. Her lips curved.“If you blame the wind again, no one will believe you.”A few guests laughed.I lowered my voice.“Can we discuss my dignity later?”“You still have some?”“Barely.”Tomas cleared his throat.“We could continue the wedding.”“Yes,” I said.Mary Ann smiled.“Please.”Liora stepped aside, leaving Tomas between us.“No traditional vows will be used today,” he said. “Mary Ann and Modric have written their own.”My stomach tightened.Kylian was somewhere behind me.I could practically feel his amusement.I ignored h

Mary Ann’s POVThe garden did not look like a place where treaties were signed. That was the first thing I noticed. There was no raised throne. No giant Ironclaw banner behind the altar. No Nightveil crown waiting on a cushion. No Mooncrest council seated in a position of honor above everyone else.Instead, the three pack symbols appeared quietly around the garden.Ironclaw’s black wolf.Mooncrest’s silver crescent.Nightveil’s midnight branch.Equal.Separate.None larger than the others.Exactly as I wanted. And everywhere, there were wildflowers. So many wildflowers.Purple moonbells from Mooncrest.Silverleaf blossoms from Nightveil.White forest flowers gathered by Ironclaw children. The combination created a scent so familiar that I stopped near the entrance and laughed softly.Greta turned toward me.“What?”“It smells like me.”She looked around proudly.“That was intentional.”“Of course it was.”“You said wildflowers.”“I did not realize you meant every wildflower in three t
