Lyra stepped into my path and smiled like she had already won.

I did not hear screams.

I did not hear any blows.

What I heard was worse.

“She’ll carry strong heirs.”

The words slid into my ears like poison.

My body went cold. My breath slowed until it hurt.

I stood still and listened.

“She will,” the first voice said. “Power like that always does.”

“And if she doesn’t?”

A pause. Then laughter.

“Then she served her purpose anyway.”

My stomach twisted. I pressed a hand to my mouth to keep from making a sound.

They were talking about me.

Not like I was a person.

Not like I was listening.

Like I was livestock.

I backed away slowly. Every step felt too loud. Too risky.

Adrian’s hands were iron on my arms, but his eyes betrayed fear I couldn’t name.A scream tore from my throat as the bond flared, and Kieran was there ripping through everything in his path.Adrian’s hands were iron on my arms, but his eyes betrayed fear I couldn’t name.“Don’t fight me,” he said softly, almost tenderly. “I’m keeping you safe.”I laughed bitterly, a sound that surprised him. “Safe?” I repeated. “Is that what you call this? Captivity? Chains? A lie you tell yourself while you watch me suffocate?”“You’re weak,” he said sharply, his jaw tight. “And you don’t understand the danger you’re in. I’m protecting you from Donovan. From Kieran. From yourself.”I forced a smile that didn’t reach my eyes. “From myself? You mean from the only person I can trust.”His hands tightened. Pain flared up my arms, but I refused to cry out. I refused to give him the satisfaction. “You think you’re my savior. But every time you touch me, every time you claim me… you try to own me.”“I do,”

Adrian’s eyes burned through me like fire, and I could feel my pulse answering his rage. Before I could move, strong hands gripped me, and darkness swallowed my world.Adrian’s eyes burned through me like fire, and I could feel my pulse answering his rage.“You belong with me, Nova,” he said, low and dangerous. His voice pressed against my chest like a weight I couldn’t lift. “You always have.”I swallowed, trembling. “I don’t belong to anyone,” I said, though my voice cracked. “And this child… it doesn’t belong to you either.”He stepped closer, and my stomach clenched. “Don’t lie. I can smell it. I can feel it. The Alpha blood… it’s ours to claim.”“No,” I whispered. “It’s not yours to claim. Not ever.”“You think you can defy me?” His teeth clenched. “You think hiding it from me will protect you?”I pressed my hands over my stomach, fighting the panic. My wolf surged, angry, protective, raw. “I’m not hiding it from you because I’m afraid. I’m hiding it because I can’t trust you.”A

Kieran cupped my face again, thumb stroking my cheek. “Nova, I will protect you. From him. From everyone. You don’t have to carry this alone.”I looked into his eyes. “You don’t understand… Adrian can sense it. The Alpha blood. The child…”“Then we stay ahead of him,” Kieran said sharply. “We hide, we train, we prepare. No mistakes.”I shivered. “I don’t know if I can.”“You can,” he said, almost fiercely. “Because you have to. For our child. For us.”A sharp sound cut through the air. My body tensed.Adrian stepped from the shadows. His eyes glimmered with anger, confusion, and something I couldn’t name. Something dark.“Nova,” he said, low and dangerous. “We need to talk.”I stiffened. My heart pounded. Kieran moved slightly in front of me.“I… I don’t know what you mean,” I said.Adrian’s gaze swept over me. It landed on the subtle swell of my stomach.“Don’t play games,” he hissed. “I can smell it. You… you’re carrying his blood.”My throat closed. I swallowed hard. “It’s not your

“There’s a ledger,” he said. “Hidden records. Council transactions. Orders signed and buried.”My mouth went dry. “By who?”Elijah looked at Kieran. Then back at me.“Donovan,” he said. “And others.”The word others felt worse.“What does it say?” I asked.“That your parents weren’t traitors,” Elijah said. “They were threats.”I laughed softly. It came out broken.“I knew,” I said. “I just didn’t have proof.”“You do now,” he replied. “Names. Dates. Payments.”Kieran exhaled slowly. “Where is it?”“Safe,” Elijah said. “For now.”“For now,” I repeated.Elijah nodded. “Someone tried to access it already.”My wolf stirred.“Lyra,” I said.“Yes,” Elijah confirmed. The name tasted bitter.“She won’t stop,” Kieran said.“No,” I replied. “She’ll escalate.”As if summoned by the thought, pain exploded behind my shoulder.I twisted.Instinct moved before fear.I grabbed a wrist mid-swing.Lyra gasped. Her eyes were wild. They gave me two choices, and both tasted like blood. The words Blood Moon Law still rang in my head. Heavy. Final. Ancient laws were never written to save people like me.“The law is clear,” a council voice said. “The accused must either surrender her power or face a challenge.”My chest tightened.“Surrender,” another voice continued, “means binding. Permanent. Her wolf will be silenced.”I knew what they didn’t say.Silenced meant dead. Not today. Not tomorrow. Slowly. Quietly.I looked at Kieran. His face was carved from stone. Rage lived under his skin.“And the challenge?” I asked.A pause.“A duel,” the council replied. “To prove worth. Alpha against Alpha.”I laughed. The sound came out thin.“There’s no Alpha bond to me,” I said.Donovan stepped forward.“There is,” he said smoothly. “Through influence.”My wolf snarled.“Who?” I asked, already knowing. Before Kieran could speak, Adrian stepped forward.“I will,” he said. The room shifted. My heart stopped.“No,” I said sharp
