Clara’s POV

I woke up smiling before I even remembered why. For a moment I just lay there on the bed half tangled in the blanket, feeling warmth in my chest that had no business being there after weeks of chaos. Then my mind flashed back to the dream I just came out from, one that made me wish not to wake just yet.

Jake.

I saw him talk to me with his voice low and sexy, his hand brushing a stray curl from my face. He’d told me I was safe with him and I so much believed him.

The smile on my face broadened as I turned on my side, searching the other half of the bed as some ridiculous part of me thought he might be there even when I clearly saw him leave last night after he came to keep me company.

My fingers met only cool empty sheets and I sighed, burying my face in the pillow.

“Pathetic,” I muttered. “You’ve officially lost it, Clara.”

My wolf stirred inside me in amusement. “Maybe you just miss his scent and it isn’t any big deal.” she teased with a giggle.

“Stop it,” I whispered laug

The passage breathed. Not in the way lungs do, but in a slow, patient rhythm that pressed against my ears the farther we went. The torchlight bent strangely along the walls, shadows stretching where there should have been none, shrinking where they should have gathered. The symbols carved into the bone-like surface were older than language, older than the packs, older even than the goddess stories the elders loved to recite. This place had not been built for wolves. It had been built to wait.I moved carefully, one hand braced against the wall, the other resting over my belly. The child was quiet now, watchful. That frightened me more than the kicking had. When he went still like this, it meant he was listening.Behind me, Jake and Clara followed in silence. Ben brought up the rear, his presence steady, protective. None of them spoke. The mountain did not feel like a place that tolerated noise. The door at the end of the passage loomed closer with every step. Bone, yes, but polished s

The floor did not stop cracking.Stone split in long, jagged lines beneath us, crawling outward like veins breaking through skin. The ritual chamber groaned, pillars shuddering as dust rained down in choking waves. Somewhere above, a bell began to ring, not in alarm, but in confusion, as though the castle itself did not yet understand what had been unleashed.I tightened my arms around Lucas as another tremor rolled through the room.He was breathing. That was the first thing I checked. Ragged, uneven, but real. The golden glow had faded from his eyes, replaced by their familiar gray, dulled with exhaustion and shock. The curse marks were gone, but the absence felt almost louder than their presence had ever been.Jake knelt beside us, gripping Lucas’s shoulder. “He’s alive,” he said, as if saying it out loud made it more certain. His jaw was clenched tight. “But whatever you did… it didn’t end cleanly.”“I know,” I said.I could feel it.The pressure hadn’t vanished. It had shifted. D

Drake had always known how to enter a room. Not loudly. Not with force. He entered the way rot entered wood. Quiet. Patient. Certain that everything would eventually give. The runes along the chamber walls pulsed brighter as he stepped closer, responding to him the way they never responded to Lucas or Jake. That alone told me more than any confession could have.“You planned this,” I said, keeping my voice steady even as my pulse thundered. “The elders. The healer. The priest. You let them believe they were in control.”Drake’s mouth curved slightly. “Belief is a very useful leash.”The priest remained bowed, unmoving. The elders did not look at me anymore. Their eyes were fixed on Drake, waiting.I forced myself to breathe slowly. Panic would weaken the bond. Panic would feed the curse.“You’re late,” I said instead. “I expected you days ago.”“I wanted you desperate first,” he replied. “Fear opens doors that pride keeps shut.”The baby kicked again, sharp and urgent. Not pain. Warni

I didn’t run. That surprised me most.My steps were steady as I left the old chapel, my breathing controlled even as my pulse thundered in my ears. Panic would have been easier. Fear would have been familiar. But clarity had settled over me instead, sharp and unyielding.Someone inside these walls believed my child was a solution. Not a life. Not a future.A tool. The corridor swallowed me in shadow as I moved, every torch I passed revealing familiar stone that now felt subtly hostile. The castle hadn’t changed, not really. I had. And once you see betrayal clearly, you start noticing how many doors are meant to close quietly behind you.By the time I reached my chamber, my hands were shaking.Lucas was awake. He sat on the edge of the bed, already dressed, his posture tense in the way it only became when the bond screamed before words could. His eyes lifted the moment I entered, silver-grey sharpening instantly.“Where did you go?” he asked.I shut the door behind me and locked it.Th

“Rose.”Lucas’s voice cut through my half-sleep, sharp and urgent.I sat up immediately. “What is it?”He was already on his feet, pulling on his boots. The room was dim, the hour before dawn when the world holds its breath. I felt it again, that pressure from earlier, stronger now, closer.Jake burst through the doors without knocking. “We have movement.”Lucas didn’t ask where. “Show me.”I was already standing. “I’m coming.”“No,” Lucas said instantly, turning to me. “You’re staying here.”I met his eyes, steady despite the fear coiling in my stomach. “If this has anything to do with me, I’m not hiding.”For a heartbeat, he looked like he would argue. Then his jaw tightened. “You stay within the inner ward. You do not cross it.”“I promise,” I said, and meant it.We moved quickly through the corridors, the castle unusually quiet. Guards stood at attention, tense but controlled. Whatever Jake had sensed, it wasn’t chaos. It was precision. The moment we stepped onto the inner observa

“Rose, you need to eat.”Clara’s voice was firm in the way only someone who loved you could manage. She set the tray down on the small table by the window and didn’t leave, didn’t pretend she hadn’t noticed the way I’d been staring at the wall for far too long.“I will,” I said. “I just… give me a minute.”She folded her arms. “You said that ten minutes ago.”I sighed and reached for the cup, sipping slowly. The tea was warm, grounding. The baby shifted, calmer now, as if agreeing with her.The castle had settled into an uneasy routine since the demon king’s messenger left. No alarms. No attacks. No shadows slipping through corridors. That silence pressed harder than any battle ever had.Lucas hadn’t slept properly in days.Neither had I.He was outside now, moving through the inner courtyard with Jake, pretending they were discussing guard rotations when I knew they were really measuring time. Counting what could be done without looking like action.“Jake’s been switching patrols aga
