“Hello again, little rogue.”

The sound froze the air in my lungs. I turned slowly, my pulse hammering as Drake stepped from the shadows behind the wardrobe. His cloak was torn, ash smearing the edges, but his smile hadn’t changed. Calm and certain. The kind of smile that belonged to a man who believed he had already won.

He looked around the room, the silk sheets, the shattered mirror, the faint glow of firelight from the windows and he chuckled softly.

“So this is where he keeps you now? Dressed like a queen while the world burns outside.”

I stayed silent, backing toward the wall. The silk that had felt soft the night before clung like a trap now, too bright, too fragile for what was coming.

He tilted his head, his eyes tracing the torn hem of my dress. “He really does have a taste for irony,” he said. “The rogue wrapped in royalty.”

“What do you want, Drake?” I asked, my voice steady though my body trembled.

He moved closer, his boots whispering against the marble. “The same thing I

Jake’s POV“Something doesn’t sit right with me,” Clara said, her voice low as she crouched by the old brick wall of the northern courtyard.I leaned against the pillar beside her, folding my arms. “You mean besides the fact that Rose’s sisters suddenly decided to forgive and forget?”She glanced over her shoulder at me, a strand of dark hair falling across her face. “Exactly that.”Her tone was sharper than usual, but I’d come to know that when Clara was angry, it wasn’t the fire you had to fear — it was the silence right before. She ran her fingers across the stone, frowning. “Jake, doesn’t this look… different to you?”I pushed off the pillar and crouched beside her. The bricks were old, stained from rain and age, but beneath the surface I could see faint etchings — symbols burned so lightly they looked like shadows.“What the hell…” I muttered, brushing my thumb across one. It pulsed faintly, a dull crimson glow that vanished as quickly as it came.“See?” Clara whispered. “I told

Rose’s POV“You’re always up before the sun, aren’t you?” Mara said, her voice light but still half asleep.I smiled, not looking up from the rose bush I was tending. “The flowers don’t wait for me. They like to greet the morning first.”She laughed softly behind me, a sound I hadn’t heard from her in years. It wasn’t cruel this time. It almost sounded real. The garden was quiet except for the soft hum of bees and the trickle of the fountain nearby. The roses had opened wide under the early light, pale pinks and whites brushing against one another in a soft blur. I loved this hour — the one that belonged to no one but the earth and me.“You’ve made this place beautiful,” Mara said. I could hear her footsteps on the gravel as she came closer. “Peace looks strange on you, little sister. I almost don’t recognize you.”I smiled faintly. “Peace feels strange on me too. But I think I’m getting used to it.”She crouched beside me, her hand brushing the edge of a blossom. Her fingers lingered

Mara’s POVThe fortress slept in uneasy peace. From the upper corridor, it looked calm enough — the torches along the walls burning in even lines, the sentries moving in quiet rhythm, the banners barely shifting in the soft wind. But peace in a place like this was never skin deep. Beneath it, the air still carried the scent of smoke and iron, a faint reminder that this kingdom had been built on ashes.I had learned to listen for the small things. The breathing of guards at their posts. The way a wolf’s claws dragged when exhaustion began to dull instinct. The sound of heavy doors locking for the night.By the time I reached the west tower, all of it had gone silent. The stone steps were slick with dew that had crept in through the narrow slits of the wall. The cold was sharper here, untouched by fire. I climbed slowly, careful with my footing, my cloak trailing behind like a shadow that had grown tired of pretending to belong to me.The top of the tower opened into a small circular ro

Lucas’s POVThe first sign that something was wrong wasn’t the whispers. It was the silence. The fortress had grown too still these past few days, the kind of silence that came when wolves held their breath, waiting for the ground to tremble. Even the guards moved softer, their boots careful against the stone, their laughter muted as if they were afraid of waking something sleeping.I could feel it too.A shift.Small at first, like the prickle of fur rising along a wolf’s neck before a storm. When Rose laughed in the mornings, the sound carried through the courtyard like sunlight. But now, that same laughter came softer — hesitant, a little too measured, as if she was thinking before every word. I noticed it most after her walks with Mara. She had insisted on those walks. “They need me to believe in them,” she’d said. “They need to see that forgiveness is real.”Forgiveness was a noble thing. But noble things could still bleed you dry.I stood on the northern balcony that overlooked

  • The Alpha's Rogue Mate    Chapter 55

Rose’s POVThe garden had always been my favorite place in the fortress. It was the only part of this stone kingdom that still felt alive — untamed. The vines along the courtyard walls had grown thick despite the caretakers’ efforts, and the scent of damp soil after dawn always reminded me of something old and forgiving. This morning, the sky was pale blue and full of promise. The roses had begun to bloom early this year, white and pink and red, crowding the archway like an apology for every winter before it.Mara stood beside me, silent for a long while. Her gaze moved over the flowers, her expression distant but soft. “You planted all this?” she asked finally.“Lucas did,” I said with a small smile. “But he says the moon goddess sent the first seed the day peace was declared.”She smiled faintly. “It suits you. I remember when you couldn’t even keep a single potted herb alive.”I laughed, the sound light and startled. “You remember that?”“Of course.” She looked at me then, and for

Mara’s POVThe morning light at the fortress was a gentler thing than I remembered from home. It did not sting; it caressed. It filled the corridors with pale gold and made even the cracks in the stone seem deliberate, elegant.I hated it.This place had been built for wolves who had never truly suffered — too clean, too still. Even the servants smiled with something close to joy, as if they didn’t remember what hunger felt like. The peace here was unnatural, and it made my skin crawl.Lila was still asleep when I rose. I dressed in the simple linen gown Rose had sent for us — soft fabric, plain but fine enough that I wanted to shred it just for existing. When I caught my reflection in the mirror, I practiced the look I would wear for the day: humble, grateful, touched by sorrow but holding on to fragile hope.It was a good mask. The knock came precisely as expected. One of the fortress maids entered with breakfast, her arms balancing a tray of fruit, warm bread, and steaming tea. “Th
