Lucas’s arms tightened around me the moment the faint kick fluttered beneath his palm. It wasn’t like the gentle movements I’d felt these past weeks. This one trembled, almost startled, like the child sensed the darkness scraping against the walls of my womb.

“Rose,” Lucas whispered. His voice cracked like something tearing inside him. “Tell me what I need to do.”

The fear in his eyes wasn’t for himself.

It was for us.

For our baby.

I pushed myself upright, wincing as a sharp pain ripped across my abdomen. Jake moved to steady me, but Lucas hissed softly, warning him back.

“I’ve got her.”

Drake stood over us, unusually still, his face tight with calculation. Not triumph. Not mockery.

Worry.

That alone terrified me more than anything the shadow-woman had said.

“Rose,” he said quietly, “you need to describe what you saw. Every detail—”

“No,” Lucas cut in sharply. “Not now. She needs to breathe.”

But I shook my head. “We don’t have time.”

The room blurred for a second. Lucas caught my fa

ROSE’S POV“Rose… look at me.”Lucas’s voice reached me before I fully understood where I was.I wasn’t standing.I wasn’t moving.I wasn’t breathing right.I was on my knees in the ritual chamber, the stone floor cold beneath my legs. Both my hands pressed over my stomach as if holding something in place. My heartbeat thudded too quickly, too heavily, like it was trying to sync with another rhythm—mine and the baby’s.A faint tremor moved through my belly. A flutter. A warning.“I’m here,” Lucas said again, trying to sound steady even though the curse had weakened his voice.I lifted my head. His eyes locked onto mine—grey, intense, and struggling to stay focused. Jake held him upright from behind, refusing to let him collapse. Drake stood several paces away, watching me with an expression that wasn’t pride or satisfaction, but caution and concern.Lucas spoke again, firmer this time. “Rose. Breathe.”I tried, but something cold tightened around my lungs, squeezing hard enough that a

ROSE’S POV“Drake… start it. Now.”My voice didn’t even sound like mine. It vibrated with something sharp, something desperate. The chamber felt too small, too dark, too full of the curse gnawing at Lucas’s life.Drake hesitated for only a breath before he lifted the obsidian dagger. Its surface shimmered with red veins — not reflections, not light. The curse recognized itself. The air thickened. My heart pounded so violently that I had to place a hand on Lucas’s chest just to remind myself he was still here. Still warm. Still breathing. Still mine.“Lie down,” Drake instructed quietly.I sank to the floor, the stone cold beneath me. My hands trembled, but my voice didn’t. “Do it.”Drake knelt beside me, and for once, he didn’t smirk, didn’t posture, didn’t stand like a king. His eyes held something like fear — not for me, but because he truly didn’t know what the ritual would awaken. He placed his palm over my heart. It felt like ice.“The curse is shifting toward the child,” he murm

Rose’s POV“Keep him breathing,” I told the healer as I stood. My voice didn’t shake this time.“Yes, Luna,” she said, bowing quickly before turning back to Lucas.I moved toward the door.“Where are you going?” Jake asked from the hallway the moment he spotted me. His eyes darted past me to the bed, his breath catching. “Is he—”“Alive,” I answered. “Barely. Drake bought us one night.”Jake’s jaw clenched. “And you trusted him?”“I didn’t trust him,” I said sharply. “I chose Lucas.”Jake exhaled hard but didn’t argue. “What do you need?”“The priestess,” I said. “Now.”He nodded once and jogged ahead. The prayer hall was dim, lit only by thin strands of silver candles that lined the walls like stars caught in stone. The priestess knelt before the altar, head bowed, hands folded as if she had been waiting for me.She lifted her face when I entered. Her eyes widened.“You felt it,” I said.“I felt everything,” she replied quietly. “Something monstrous stirred tonight.”I walked straigh

Rose’s POV“Move!” I shouted. The guards rushed in, lifting Lucas carefully from my arms. His skin was burning, his breath uneven, the curse thrashing through him like a trapped storm. The healer ran toward us, but before her hands even touched him, the air in the room shifted.Cold.Wrong.Like the walls exhaled a breath that didn’t belong to them.My heart thudded once, painfully hard. That scent. That presence. That deliberate, amused darkness.A shadow stretched beneath the doorway before a figure stepped through it as if the castle belonged to him.Drake.Alive.Smiling.And walking into my home as though he had been invited.“Easy,” he said, raising both palms slowly as the guards drew weapons. “I heard commotion. Thought I should come see if my future allies were still breathing.”My wolf bristled. No — she snarled inside me, ready to tear him apart.“What are you doing here?” I asked, stepping between him and Lucas instinctively. “The border guards were supposed to escort you.

ROSE’S POV“Lucas!”My scream tore out of me as I lunged into the throne room. The air tasted like burning metal. The torches flickered violently, struggling to stay alive. Magic so thick it felt like poison pulsed through the chamber. At the center of it—Lucas hung suspended, limp, trapped within a rising spiral of red-black sigils that burned themselves into the air. His eyes were closed. His limbs jerked occasionally as though something inside him fought to tear free. The Demon King stood beneath him, tracing the last of the symbols with a hand made of smoke and claws. He did not turn until I skidded across the marble floor, fur bristling, jaws bared. His smile curved slowly.“So. The mate arrives.”Every part of me wanted to leap at him, tear him apart, rip that smirk from his face and drag Lucas out of the air with my teeth if I had to.“You have no right to touch him,” I growled. He chuckled. “I have every right. I gave your line the curse. I decide when it ends.”I crouched lo
