Elsin Waveridge POV

"Did you really drag a total stranger to the Pack Elders and sign a mate bond behind my back?" Tamsin Whitlocke slammed both hands on the steering wheel of her crimson runner-wagon, screeching the iron wheels to a halt outside the convenience store. "Elsin Waveridge, you don't even have a suitor! Did you pick an outland wolf off the side of the mountain trail?"

"He's not an outland wolf, Tamsin," Elsin said, holding her hands up defensively as her best friend stared at her in utter disbelief. "My mother pulled his profile off the territory notice board. His name is Alaric Westbourne. He works for Westbourne Alpha Holdings, his parents passed into the ancestral grounds, and his wolf is untainted."

"Alaric?" Tamsin frowned, her brows knitting together as she tried to place the name. "Alaric Westbourne... The Whitlockes aren't high enough in the pack hierarchy to attend Council summits, but that name sounds terrifyingly familiar."

"He's just an ordinary low-ranking pack laborer," Elsin insisted quickly, unwilling to let Tamsin’s runaway imagination spiral. "He drives an old iron cart, lives in a rented lower-territory shelter, and works hard. I don't care about silver vaults or noble titles, Tamsin. My mother is sick, and I need my life to be quiet."

"You're insane," Tamsin groaned, leaning her forehead against the leather wheel. "You refused every decent male in the territory after Percival Dainsley betrayed you five years ago, and now you give your entire mate bond to a complete stranger? What about Percival? He just returned from the imperial capital as the chief enforcer for the Pack Court. He bought a massive stone manor down in the Silverhorn Valley! If you just let me reach out to him—"

"I have a bound mate now, Tamsin," Elsin interrupted, her voice turning sharp and unyielding as her golden eyes flashed with raw warning. "Percival belongs to my past. I don't care how many silver manors he owns in the valley. I signed my oath with Alaric, and I intend to keep it."

Tamsin sighed heavily, waving her hand in defeat. "Fine, fine! But if this laborer treats my best friend like trash, I will personally rip his throat out with my claws."

Before Elsin could reply, the heavy silver mind-comm device in her tunic pocket vibrated against her hip. She pulled it out, her chest tightening when she saw the caller ID glowing on the glass screen: My Male, Alaric.

"Where are you, Elsin?" Alaric’s deep, velvet rumble filled her ear, sending an immediate wave of possessive heat straight down her spine. "I'm coming to collect you."

"I'm outside the lower market with Tamsin," Elsin answered, keeping her voice low. "Is something wrong?"

"Send me your exact territory coordinates," Alaric ordered calmly, ignoring her question. "I'll be there in ten minutes."

"I'm done here," Elsin said into the comm. "I'll send the location now."

She clicked off the device and turned to Tamsin, who was grinning like a wild mountain wolf. "Is that the mister?"

"He's coming to pick me up," Elsin muttered, her cheeks flushing warm as she sent her location link. "I have to go."

"I'm staying right here," Tamsin declared, crossing her arms over her chest. "I need to look this laborer in the eye and smell his scent before I let him take my best friend."

Less than ten minutes later, a beat-up, dark iron runner-cart rattled down the stone street, pulling smoothly up to the curb. The heavy wooden door swung open, and a tall, dangerously broad male stepped down onto the cobblestones.

Alaric wore a simple, dark laborer’s tunic, but the way he moved—every step dripping with silent, predatory dominance—made the air around him freeze. His sharp jawline, midnight hair, and piercing gray eyes commanded absolute submission from every common wolf passing on the street.

Tamsin’s jaw dropped so low it nearly hit the pavement. She leaned over and pinched Elsin’s arm hard. "By the Moon Mother, Elsin... If beauty could pay the pack taxes, that male would own the entire mountain range!"

Elsin rolled her eyes, her face burning with embarrassment as she stepped forward. "Alaric, this is my closest friend, Tamsin Whitlocke. Tamsin, this is... my bound mate, Alaric Westbourne."

She stumbled over the word mate, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Alaric’s gray eyes softened as he looked down at Elsin, a faint, dangerous smirk touching his lips before he turned a polite, cool nod toward Tamsin. "It's a pleasure, Tamsin."

"The pleasure is entirely mine, Mr. Westbourne," Tamsin purred, her eyes scanning his broad shoulders and the cheap iron cart behind him with a mixture of awe and pity. "Elsin certainly kept your looks a secret!"

Alaric wrapped a massive, warm hand around Elsin’s waist, pulling her flush against his side with effortless authority. "Shall we head to our new home, little wolf?"

Elsin Waveridge POV"I am the one who set these terms, Tamsin," Elsin said, resting her hands on the polished mahogany counter of the market post. "I refuse to take advantage of him. We don't know if this mate bond will even survive the winter, so long-term expectations mean nothing right now."Tamsin Whitlocke crossed her arms, her golden eyes narrowing as she searched Elsin’s calm face. "You carry yourself like a martyr, Elsin. You were top of our warrior training class before your father died, and now you waste your golden years managing a low-tier trade stall. What about Percival Dainsley? He just returned from the Capital after securing a massive seat on the Enforcer Council.""I have a bound mate," Elsin said smoothly, her voice dropping an octave as her wolf stirred with quiet warning beneath her skin. "Percival belongs to my past. I don't care how many silver manors he owns in the upper valley. I signed my oath with Alaric, and I intend to honor it."Tamsin opened her mouth to

Elsin Waveridge POVElsin’s wet fingers slipped uselessly against the rough timber of the heavy crate, her strength giving out under the punishing assault of the storm. Just as the wooden edge tilted toward the mud, a massive, warm hand shot through the rain, taking the full weight of her burden without a single tremble."Allow me," a deep, velvet voice rumbled right above her head.Elsin gasped, looking up into the shadows as the male thrust a wide, dark umbrella into her shivering hand. Before she could process his presence, he lifted the massive crate effortlessly against his chest and strode toward the stone entrance of her apartment dwelling. She snapped back to her senses three seconds later, rushing after him to hold the canopy over his head until they cleared the threshold into the lit lobby.Alaric Westbourne carried her heavy cargo all the way up the stone stairs, setting the crates down neatly outside her doorway without dropping a single drop of rain onto her precious spir

Elsin Waveridge POV"Elsin Waveridge, did you forge a fake pack parchment just to shut me up?" Georgiana Waveridge pointed a trembling, clawed finger at the glowing crimson seal, her pale eyes wide with suspicion. "You expect me to believe a mate bond just fell into your lap?""Mother, look at the ancestral stamp," Elsin said, setting her leather satchel down on the worn wooden table. "It came straight from the Frostwick Elders Hall. The pack elders witnessed it themselves. It's real.""Then where is my son-in-law?" Georgiana pressed, her gray tail-tuft twitching with restless agitation as she paced the small stone room. "Why didn't he step through the threshold to present himself to your mother? I told you to go on a simple date, not bind your wolf to a stranger. Do you even know who he is?""You were the one who pulled his notice off the territory board," Elsin said quietly. "He works for Westbourne Alpha Holdings, which means his position is stable. He's thirty, his wolf is untaint

Elsin Waveridge POV"You never linked your wolf-comm frequency with mine," Alaric Westbourne said, his voice deep and commandingly low as Elsin Waveridge turned on her heel to leave the cobbled steps of the Elders Hall. "How am I supposed to reach my female when the pack borders close?"Elsin froze, her skin prickling as her dormant wolf stirred under the sudden, possessive weight of his tone. She reached into her leather satchel and pulled out her silver mind-link transceiver. "I forgot."Alaric stepped closer, his broad shadow completely swallowing her. He tapped his iron token against her device, flashing his private wolf frequency onto her glass screen."Reach out if your wolf senses danger," Alaric said smoothly.Elsin glanced down at his screen out of the corner of her eye. Her breath hitched. Right above her newly registered frequency, Alaric had already typed a single, permanent label: Luna."I will," Elsin muttered, her chest tightening with a strange, sudden pulse of heat. S

Elsin Waveridge POV"Are you going to sign the mate bond or keep wasting my breath?"Elsin Waveridge kept her spine rigid against the wooden booth, her golden eyes locked onto the towering male sitting across from her inside Silverthorn Pack Lodge. She did not flinch. She couldn't afford to.The male before her was lethal—sharp cheekbones, midnight hair, and slate-gray eyes that burned with a suffocating, predatory aura. Even dressed in a simple dark tunic that marked him as an ordinary low-ranking pack worker, his broad shoulders and commanding posture screamed dominant strength. He left every other male her mother had forced her to meet in the dust. This was her tenth blind date in three months. Her mother, Georgiana Waveridge, had spent the last ninety days threatening to starve herself if Elsin did not secure a mate and carry on their bloodline."We just sat down," the male said, his voice a deep, velvet rumble that made Elsin's dormant wolf stir beneath her ribs.
