I heard the laughing of men before anything else. My mind worked to grasp what was going on, reaching for a memory of what was going on.

The warehouse.

Hunter and I had returned to the warehouse. Everything felt the same as it had before. Everything was how we had found it. All we needed to do was plant the explosives and get out. Something obviously went wrong. What the hell had gone wrong?

“Wakey, wakey,” a voice mocked as a hand slapped against my face.

I snarled and jerked away, forcing my eyes to open. I didn’t move far. I couldn’t. My wrists were bound and pulled taught on either side. My knees touched the cold concrete floor but I was suspended. It explained the burning of my shoulders as they held my weight for who knows how long. I tugged at my restraints angrily.

“Now, now, none of that,” a strange male spoke in front of me. My eyes focused on his face. He was middle-aged, maybe older, but in good shape. He was familiar but I didn’t know where I knew him from. “There’s no us

I paced Lucas’ office, ignoring Max’s intense gaze as he waited for me to tell him what to do. Well… more like give him permission. We hadn’t heard from Lucas or Hunter in nearly three days. They were supposed to check in once a day. That hadn’t happened. The last time we heard from them, Lucas had told us what they had found inside the warehouse. The next step in the plan was to eliminate the threat. It would be a risky endeavor for many reasons. So I wasn’t necessarily any more worried when we didn’t hear from him right after the attack but when another day passed, worry was all I could do.“Come on, Jaden,” Max urged. “We can’t wait any longer. We need to go find them.”“And potentially blow their cover if we do?” I replied.“Their cover must already be blown,” Max argued.“Or they had to lay low longer than they anticipated,” I retorted, throwing my hands up in the air before falling into a chair. “I don’t know what the hell to do. I can’t go looking for Lucas and Hunter. Someone

“The king wants to see you, Sutton,” Raphe told me. “Now.”“Just the king?” I asked anxiously.“I’m not sure,” he replied. “Come on. I’ll take you.”I swallowed, working to hide my apprehension. If it was just my grandfather, I wouldn’t be so worried. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t relish lying to him. I wasn’t looking forward to it at all and I would tell him the truth as soon as I felt it was safe. But he would understand better than the Council would if and when he found out the truth.I let Raphe guide me through the royal wing to Grandfather’s office suite next to his rooms. He knocked but didn’t wait for an answer. He ushered me inside, where I was immediately faced by my grandfather and, to my surprise, Princess Nomi. Raphe stayed, too. Leaving me standing in the center of the room with three sets of eyes staring intensely at me.The fur on the back of Nova’s neck ruffled out. ‘I don’t like this,’ she said in my mind. ‘Something feels off.’I had to agree with her. I couldn’t say

I had expected a visit, but not so soon, nor by the person on the other side of the door.“Uncle…” I was stopped as Raphe pushed his way into the apartment, shutting the door behind himself.“I’m not here to ask questions,” Raphe said abruptly, looking between Soloman and Tarrah.“I’m not sure what more we could tell you if you were going to ask questions,” I stated.“Good,” he replied. “I hope that means your alibi will standup to that statement because Anders isn’t going to let them just take you at your word.”I felt a bit uneasy that Raphe was the first to show up at my door. This was the first I’d seen him in several days. He’d been out of the palace. I hadn’t had a chance—or the nerve—to ask him about the photos of Anders and him when they were younger. I still didn’t know what their actual relationship was or if it had truly ended. I couldn’t see Raphe as the uncle I’d been getting to know these last weeks. I wasn’t sure I could trust him anymore. So, I’d keep playing it safe,

Anders jerked his arm away as one of the royal guards attempted to take him. With another snarl, he turned on his heel and headed toward the royal wing. King Osric nodded for the others to follow before turning back to me.“We’ll talk later,” he told me with a raised eyebrow.I nodded my acknowledgement. I wasn’t fully in the clear yet, but I wasn’t worried about my grandfather. Hannah chose to come with me and once he found out that Anders had hit her, he wouldn’t push to get her back. Regardless of the law.Princess Nomi came to stand next to me as we watched everyone disappear around a corner.“I hope she is safe,” she said. “It is concerning that there doesn’t seem to be any trace of her. You wouldn’t have any idea where she would go?”I shook my head. “I don’t seem to know anything about my sister these days,” I told her.“And you’re sure you didn’t have anything to do with her leaving?” she pressed. “Not even through Lucas? I thought he would be visiting this week.”My brow furr

I had explained to Hannah that I needed to go back to the capital to keep her safe. I had to deny having anything to do with her disappearance. Otherwise, Anders would tear our pack apart looking for her and, thanks to lycan law, our grandfather wouldn’t be able to stop him. I told her we had everything planned out. She would never be left alone and no one would suspect where we had taken her. But that would put others in danger if I didn’t go back to keep control of the situation.Hannah’s fears eventually faded after she found out Sera would be there later in the day. However, I wasn’t sure that made things better. She just seemed angry at me now. That did make it easier to leave. She was safe. I had no obligation to stick around and deal with her mood swings. Especially, since I was exhausted. It took us a couple of hours longer to get back to the palace than it did to get Hannah to the safe house. It was midday when Tarrah and I arrived back at the palace to find a hectic atmosphe
