I was fighting to keep Rhonen at bay. He was going between pushing for control and retreating into the depths of my subconscious. He would hit the barrier with an explosive energy. More than once I started to shift. He only stopped by the impossible position the chains still held us in place. He was losing his mind with the need to get to our… to Sutton.

The pain of the severed bond still clung to my chest. I knew it wouldn’t subside. Not unless I accepted the rejection. I would never do that. But I didn’t think I would have long to live with it. I couldn’t see a way out of that damn room. Hunter was slowly healing but had been bound now, his arms pulled over his head by chains. I didn’t know how long we had been left alone this time.

“Hang in there, Luke,” Hunter urged. “We’ll get to Sutton. We’ll make this right.”

“Stop, Hunter,” I grunted.

“Luke…”

“Stop,” I barked. “It’s done. Sutton won’t listen. Why would she? Mason ensured that she knew exactly what it was to feel that betrayal.

“Oh my gosh. Sutton.”Tarrah came back to find me in the fetal position on the bedroom floor. My vision was blurry and the pain in my chest was intense. Tarrah kept calling my name, asking me what was wrong. Asking me what happened…“I… I rejected Lucas.”I had felt the pain in my heart not long after my call with Helene. I almost didn’t believe it. Nova didn’t want to believe it. But I knew what that feeling was. I had felt far too often for years with Mason. Then we felt it again and again.Nova howled in anguish and rage as I screamed in a ball on floor, praying for it to stop. When it did, I just wanted to think. I wanted to figure out why this was happening. How could Lucas do this? Then I thought about what Nomi had said. I remembered finding Lucas and Sera in the hall the night of ball. He had asked Sera to come to the capital. He’d come to see her. I’d already started to lose him even then. Then I abandoned him…“Sutton…” Tarrah pulled me up to look at her. “What are you talki

The woman adjusted what little of her dress there was, wiping stray lipstick from her heavily made up face. Her appearance explained the amusement I kept hearing in the other room. She was a prostitute. However, the men may have taken advantage of her presence, she wasn’t here for their entertainment. That was clear. Rhonen snarled viciously, a sound that echoed in my chest as I pulled at my chains.“Don’t even think about it,” I warned, feeling Rhonen growing stronger.“You know what you have to do,” Hank told me.“It’s not going to happen,” I snapped.Hank pushed the woman roughly in my direction. She stumbled forward, looking around the dim room. She faltered at the sight of Hunter, tugging at her clothes again. Hank stopped her from taking a step back, grabbing her arm and hauling her in front of me.“Hey, um, this isn’t what I signed up for,” she said nervously.“You signed up for whatever I say,” Hank threatened. “You have a job. You know what happens if you back out.” Hank look

“Wha… what are you saying?” I choked out, pulling my hand away. Nova’s hackles raised.“Sutton, you shouldn’t have to live like this,” Nomi said. “I’ve sensed something for a while now. You talk about trust issues but something had to have made you doubt him. He’s been keeping things from you, hasn’t he?”“I don’t… I mean, it’s not…”“Sutton, you don’t have to explain,” she said. “And you shouldn’t have dealt with this alone all this time.”“I still don’t know what you’re trying to imply, Nomi,” I told her.“You think there’s someone else,” she stated.“What?” I exclaimed. “No, of… of course not. I mean, we’re marked. I would know if he was cheating.”Nomi’s expression changed, like I had said exactly what she wanted me to say. A pit formed in my stomach. I didn’t understand what was going on. My mind was reeling. Nova was pacing aggressively in my mind. Urging me to walk away.“Just because you haven’t felt him doesn’t mean he hasn’t been considering it,” Nomi pointed out.“He wouldn

“Sutton, I think it’s clean enough,” Tarrah urged.I was on my hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor. I hadn’t stopped moving in days. It was making me a little jittery and I had knocked over the pot of coffee, shattering the carafe. I had cleaned the apartment from top to bottom already. Twice. I’d walked the palace. I’d walked the grounds. I couldn’t sit still.“Sutton…” Tarrah grabbed the brush and dropped it in the bucket, taking my hands to keep me from continuing. “You need to stop. You’re going to hurt yourself.”“Why hasn’t he called back?” I asked. “Where is he, Tarrah?”She pursed her lips. “I don’t know, sweetie.”“Why didn’t Jaden tell you where he was? Why didn’t he tell me? What is going on?”Tarrah let out a frustrated breath. “I don’t know that either,” she said, pushing up to bring me to my feet. “But you know what, I think it’s time we figured it out.”“We?”“We’re going home,” Tarrah said. “I’m not asking,” she continued, stopping my protest. “You’ve been away

I choked on a disbelieving laugh. Surely I hadn’t heard him right. But his constant gaze told me I hadn’t. The pit in my stomach grew as I tried to make sense of it. Reject Sutton? I felt Rhonen stir in my mind at the thought.“You’re insane,” I spat. “That will never happen.”“Maybe,” Hank said. “But you are an Alpha, Mr. Danvers. You have a responsibility. A pack to think about. To protect.”Taking the cue, Hunter was met with several more blows to the abdomen.“Stop,” I bellowed. The brute froze, effected by my Alpha’s command. But it only lasted a few seconds, which he showed by landing one more punch to his face.“That’s enough, Jesse,” Hank said. “I think the Alpha gets the message.”Yeah, I got the idea. I had to figure out why. It was interesting that Hank said his “employers” wanted this. Not his Alpha. Not his pack leaders. Employers. Was he hiding his loyalties or was he really only loyal to the paycheck? The sedative had warn off now and some of my strength had returned. I
