I moved to go to her but she came to me first.

“Soloman, it’s me, Sutton,” she spoke into the phone. “Is Raphe with you?”

“He is,” Soloman replied.

“How is he?”

Soloman’s voice lowered. “Nomi was standing with Osric the whole time,” he explained. “I think it’s sinking in that they’ve been working together behind his back all this time. He’s… not speaking right now.”

Sutton nodded. “I’m glad you guys are safe.”

Luna Kimo’s phone started to ring from across the table. So did Jaden’s next to me. T

“That’s enough,” I yelled as I shot to my feet. “We all know that no one in this room would rush to report something as serious as a firearm without making damn sure they could cover their own ass first. You chose to trust us, Luna Kimo. We weren’t given much of a choice ourselves. So if a single detail is all it takes to make you waiver, then whatever kind of alliance we have at the moment is certainly in jeopardy. And I don’t think I need to point out how that doesn’t just put our lives at greater risk.”“Separating myself from you may put my life at risk, but I think there’s a strong argument that working with him puts my people in far greater danger,” Kimo snapped.“If you truly believed that, you’d be calling your men back as we speak,” I retorted. “But you know as well as I do that out of everyone we have spoken to today, Lucas is the only one who has actually won a war, let alone fought one.”We all stared at each other in silence. Kimo’s frustration slowly subsided as she acce

Then another call came up on my screen as well.“It’s Alpha Renward,” I told the room.“I’ve got Max,” Jaden said.“Alpha Thane,” Luna Kimo said. “We need to set up a conference call for this.”“I need to get off anyway,” Soloman said. “I need to get our exit plan in place. I don’t know how long we’ll be safe here.”The call disconnected. Kimo had already answered her call and so had Jaden. Alpha Renward came back up on my screen as he called back. I answered but didn’t give him time to say anyth

We followed Luna Kimo to a marina about twenty minutes from Korinna’s cottage and boarded a private yacht. I’d been mind-linking with Jaden and messaging Max the entire time getting strategies in place. Doing anything to feel like I was doing something. I didn’t like that I still didn’t have the details of the attack in the capital. I didn’t like that I was so far from my territory when my pack was facing such a threat.“Tell me what you know,” I told Luna Kimo as we pulled out of the marina toward open water. “How long have you been watching the royal family?”Kimo raised an eyebrow. “You figured that out, did you?”“It takes time to get that kind of network of contacts in place,” I commented.“Indeed,” Kimo replied. “Kori and I have known each other a long time. Still, I think it’s safe to say that every pack leader has some form of information network embedded in the capital. Of one sort or another.”“Especially a Luna who declines to take an Alpha for a mate,” I stated. Kimo’s eye

It felt like time was moving at a snail’s pace. Korinna tried to help by talking about Mom, but my heart just wasn’t in it. All I could do was pace to keep from going stir crazy. My mind kept going to Soloman and the council, praying they would make it out okay. Then back home to the Ironpaw Pack and how they needed to prepare for a possible attack. I even insisted that Lucas call his aunt and uncle to have them go to the packhouse until it’s safe. They lived so close to the border, I didn’t like to think about how exposed they were if an attack did happen.Nova paced in my head. She was itching to run. She needed to act. She could feel that her pack was in danger. Still, trying to keep her calm wasn’t as much of a distraction as I would have liked.“We’ll figure this out,” Lucas assured me.“I’m not worried about figuring things out,” I said. “I’m worried that we could be at war by the end of the day.”Lucas sighed, brushing a strand of hair from my forehead. “Yeah, so am I,” he admi

“What… I can’t. We’re on our way to chambers now,” Soloman told me frantically. “What’s going on?”I was already up off the couch, hand pushing through my hair as I tried to figure out what to do. Which was nothing. There was nothing I could do from this far away.“You said there was no way they would be able to meet before tomorrow,” I replied.“Apparently, Osric wasn’t having that,” Soloman stated. “He had already sent men to pick up all the council members who weren’t already in the capital. The meeting is happening now.”“Listen to me, Soloman, you need to get out of there,” I told him urgently. “Osric’s going to attack the council. It’s going to be bloodbath. Grab whoever you can and get into hiding. Do you understand? Just get the hell out of there. Now.”There was a pause. I gave him only a second to let what I was saying sink in.“Solo…”“I’ll do what I can,” he replied. “I’ll call you when I’m safe.”The line disconnected.“We should go,” I announced. “We need to get to the c

“What…? No, that… that can’t be right,” Sutton protested. My heart dropped into my gut. To make accusation like that was a death sentence. To even suggest it to another member of the royal family was beyond treason. This wasn’t a foolish woman. Reading Leanetta’s journals told me enough to know that. If Korinna was going to make such an accusation, she had evidence. But what was worse… what had my stomach on the verge of revolt… was that it made sense. Maybe not to Sutton yet, but the pieces were starting to come together all too easily for me.“Honey,” Korinna continued, “I’m sorry, but it is.”“But… why?” Sutton asked.Korinna sighed. “Honestly, I don’t know,” she admitted. “At least, your mother and I could never really figure that out. All we knew was that he was behind your father’s assassination. And a lot of other things too.”“So, what are you saying…? That there’s some kind of conspiracy going on in the capital? That the king of Lycuria is just having people assassinated?”“H
