I was numb. I had to be. There was no other way to approach the situation.

They covered Daisy’s body but I still had to get Jack out of there. We sent a warrior to run back to pick up a vehicle and meet us at the main road. I would have carried Jack but he refused to let go of Sutton. He clung to her waist every step of the way. When the truck pulled up, he still would let go of her. She managed to coax up into the front bench seat while scooting in next to him. As soon as I got behind the wheel, I felt like I was at a loss for the first time since my parents died.

I just drove. We said nothing. The only sounds were the occasional noises Sutton made to sooth Jack as best she could. Eventually, he fell asleep with his head in her lap.

I’d already circled the town three times when I resolved myself to turn the vehicle toward my aunt’s and uncle’s house. They would need to be the first to know what had happened tonight. Jack had a grueling road ahead of him and would need them more than

I did as I had promised and kept Sera at arm’s length over the next few days. But not just her. I was having trouble opening up to anyone around me. I still didn’t believe that Sera had betrayed us — or at least, I still didn’t want to believe it — but the more time I had to dwell on the subject, the more I began to doubt. However, I didn’t let those doubts eat at me. Instead, I let the whole situation fuel my determination.I had been keeping my plan close to the vest before Lucas’ revelation. Mostly because it was likely foolish and never going to work. But also because I didn’t want anyone to talk me out of it. Especially Lucas. He would never be okay with me taking such a risk but I had to. He would just have to understand that I was doing this for both of us.I’d been buried in my studies and defense training on the days leading up to the summit to make sure I was as prepared as possible for the endeavor ahead of me. I was feeling confident as I packed my suitcase the day before

“I don’t think you should work with Sera anymore,” Lucas replied.“What?” I asked incredulously. “Why?”Lucas didn’t respond. I crossed my arms over my chest angrily, waiting for an answer.“Lucas…” I pressed when he still didn’t say anything.“I don’t think we can trust her,” he said.I was stunned by that answer. We had talked about my friendship with Sera more than once. After she had apologized to me, he said he trusted my judgment regarding any involvement I would have with her. Since her cousin was one of Tarrah’s best friends, it would be hard to avoid her completely. Besides, I genuinely liked Sera, regardless of her history with Lucas. And he had seemed more open to the friendship lately. So this felt like it was coming out of nowhere.“You’re not making any sense, Lucas,” I said. “I know you weren’t impressed with her behavior when we first met, but even then you said you were surprised because she was a good person.”“When we were together, she was,” he stated. “But people

“Luna Camilla is the mate of Alpha Lemont of the Crescent River Pack,” I recited. “They have two children, Grant and Isabel. His Beta is Beta Samuel. They’re the fourth wealthiest pack and our leading source of lumber and marble in the country.” I looked at Sera expectantly. “How was that?”“So close,” she replied. “You got everything except they have three children. You forgot their youngest, Harris.”I grunted in frustration. “I’m never going to get this in time.”“Of course you are,” Motty said. “You’re doing great.”“Give me another one,” I told them.Motty held up another photo. It was an older gentleman with graying hair and a serious scowl. I wracked my brain for a name. I knew he wasn’t an Alpha. He wasn’t a royal. He had to be a member of the Royal Council.“Councilmen Hendrick?” I guessed.Motty pursed her lips, looking at the back of the card. “Councilmen Hawthorn.”I fell back into the couch cushions with a sigh. This had been harder than I expected. I guess I hadn’t reali

“Jack, we didn’t tell anyone she was taken there,” I said. “No one else could have told the Dawn Stalkers.”“But it wasn’t me,” Jack insisted. “I swear, I stopped talking to my mom after that night. I told her I wouldn’t help her anymore. I promise. It wasn’t me.”“Okay, okay,” I replied. “I believe you.”That meant we had another problem. If Jack hadn’t led the Dawn Stalkers to the manor house, who did? We had another traitor within the pack. Someone else was helping them. After we discovered Daisy, we were able to get one of the prisoners to confirm their contact was a woman. I assumed it had to be her. But we were wrong.“Luna Sutton will never forgive me,” Jack said sadly.“That’s not true, Jack,” I told him. “That’s not true at all. She’s already forgiven you. She’ll be here for you no matter what.”“That’s… that’s what Nova said, too.”I looked over at him in surprise. “When did you speak to Nova?”“She spoke to me,” Jack explained. “That night… She told me everything would be o

“Are you sure I should be here?” Sutton asked nervously. “I don’t know if I should be here. He’s probably not going to want to see me. I should go.”I grabbed her before she headed for the door. Taking her by the shoulders and planting her on the couch. We were in the apartment my family stays in when they visit. Aunt Lara and Jack were supposed to be here any minute. Aunt Lara said Jack is talking a little now but still won’t talk about his mother or anything to do with that night. At least, he wasn’t talking about it with her.Still, I wasn’t planning on ambushing the boy with questions the moment he got back. That’s why we were waiting for them in their apartment. I figured it would be more comfortable and less pressure to greet them here rather than out front or having them come to our suite.Sutton was worried that her presence would upset him. That somehow she was more of a reminder of that night than the rest of us. I obviously disagreed.“He’ll be glad you’re here,” I assured

“Anything,” Soloman replied.“Tell me about the Royal Council,” I requested. “I want to know what I’ll be walking into.”“That I can do. Where would you like to start?”“Well, first, I want to know what the Ironpaw Pack’s standing is with the Council,” I said. “How do they feel about Lucas? How did they handle him taking over as Alpha?”“I won’t lie and say everyone was pleased with what happened here a decade ago,” Soloman said. “In fact, that’s why I’m here. Of the nine packs of Lycuria, only three have a Council Ambassador that is a relatively permanent resident in their territory.”“Oh, I didn’t know that,” I said, my brow furrowing.“Yes, I was sent to keep an eye on the new leader,” Soloman continued. “The wolf who led a rebellion against his own Alpha. That’s certainly something they would be concerned about. However, they respect that won his position against Alpha Morgan in fair combat. Our laws dictate that not even the Council can rule against that.”“So, they’re content to
