“You want me to spare a traitor, Emerald? Crawl across this glass and tell me you belong to me instead,” Alpha Zion whispered, his boot on my father’s bloodied neck.

The hall stank of blood and storm. No one moved. Every lord, elder, and warrior watched me—the disgraced daughter of the Kirby bloodline—kneeling on shattered stained glass.

Shards cut through my tunic and into my knees. I didn’t flinch or make a sound.

Beneath Zion’s boot, my father groaned. Elder Marcus Kirby had once commanded the northern territories. Now he was beaten, stripped of his crest, and waiting for the axe at dawn.

“I asked you a question, girl,” Zion snarled and I looked up.

Alpha Zion Pattinson was six-foot-four, broad, and lethal. His black eyes held no mercy. Dark veins pulsed along his jaw. He had taken the throne by force, and everyone in the pack knew it.

“Stop…” my father rasped. “Emerald… don’t crawl to him… Let me die…”

“Silence the traitor,” Elder Silas barked from the dais, his hand on the ceremonial pack seal. “The Council has reached its verdict. Execution by public beheading at sunrise.”

“I am speaking to his daughter,” Zion said without looking back. Elder Silas stopped.

My wolf screamed at me to run, but I stayed. If my father died tonight, the Kirby bloodline would be erased and our hidden heritage would die with him.

I put my hands flat on the stone.

A glass shard sliced my palm. Pain shot up my arm. I bit my lip until I tasted blood, then dragged myself forward one inch. Then another.

Gasps moved through the nobles.

'Look at the proud Kirby princess,' someone whispered. 'Kneeling like a beggar for a traitor.'

I heard every word and memorized their faces. I dragged my bleeding knees over the glass and stopped inches from Zion’s boots. My hands shook as I lifted my chin and looked straight into his eyes.

“I am not begging for mercy, Alpha Zion,” I said. “I am proposing an exchange.”

Zion smiled without warmth. “An exchange? Your land is seized. Your titles are stripped. Your father’s life is forfeit.”

“You need an heir,” I said.

The hall went quiet. Elder Silas stepped forward, but Zion raised one finger and the old man froze.

“Go on,” Zion said.

“The Council gave you ninety days to present a pregnant mate, or they invoke the Succession Mandate and strip your title,” I said. “Sylvia Sterling’s bloodline is toxic to your wolf. Your body rejects her. You’ve spent six months searching for an Omega strong enough to carry your line without dying from your Alpha aura. You haven’t found one.”

Zion’s eyes narrowed. “And you think you can survive me?”

“I know I can,” I said. “My father’s life for my body. Exile instead of execution. Banish him to the outer wastes. In exchange, I will sign the Surrogate Blood-Pact tonight. I will bear your heir.”

“Preposterous!” Elder Silas roared. “She is the daughter of a condemned traitor! Her womb is polluted! Alpha, order her head taken with her father’s!”

“Step back, Silas,” Zion said.

Zion lifted his boot from my father’s neck. My father gasped and coughed into the stone. Zion didn’t look at him. He grabbed my jaw and lifted me until my feet barely touched the floor.

His fingers locked around my face. His scent was cedar and pine. Up close, his Alpha power pressed against me.

“You think this is strategy, little wolf?” Zion whispered. “You come into my hall, bleed on my floor, and think you can manipulate my Council? If you sign any contract, you are not a princess. You are my captive with no rights, no title and no freedom until that child takes its first breath.”

“Do we have a deal, Alpha?” I asked. “Or do I bleed out on your shoes?”

No one dared to breathe.

Zion stared into my eyes, searching for fear. When he found none,, a cruel smile spread across his face.

“Bring the parchment,” he said.

Sylvia Sterling gasped near the throne pillars. “Zion, no! You cannot accept a deal from this trash!”

Zion ignored her. A scribe rushed forward, trembling, and placed the parchment and a silver ritual dagger in Zion’s hand. Zion sliced open his palm and let his blood pool into the silver bowl. Then he seized my bleeding hand and pressed his raw palm against mine.

A jolt tore through me and my wolf howled. The contract burned through my veins and bound me to him. I bit my tongue and refused to scream.

“The deal is struck,” Zion declared. “Marcus Kirby is banished to the northern border at first light. If he sets foot in Ironfang territory again, he dies.”

He tossed the dagger onto the stone, making it clatter loudly.

Zion pulled me against his chest and leaned down, his lips brushing my ear.

“You think you saved a traitor today, little wolf?” he murmured. “You just sold your soul to a monster. And I never let my property go.”

The dark-fire boulder didn't hit us.Before the flaming mass could crash into our ridge, Zion swung his obsidian broadsword in a sweeping arc. A violent wall of pitch-black shadow erupted from the blade, catching the boulder mid-air and shattering it into a million harmless, smoking fragments that rained like black snow over the cliff edge. The shockwave whipped our cloaks back, but Zion's stallion didn't flinch an inch. He sat in the saddle like an ancient mountain god, his dark eyes locked on the enemy commander across the Black River gorge."Is that the best your ghost can throw, Garrett?" Zion roared, his voice carrying across the freezing canyon with the terrifying force of an absolute monarch.Across the gorge, on the elevated enemy ridge, Commander Garrett didn't flinch. He slowly lowered his double-headed battleaxe, his scarred face twisting into a cold, grim smile that we could see even through the spyglass. My heart pounded against my ribs. The realization of who was leading

My heart slammed against my ribs as the realization echoed in the silence of the war room.I stared into Zion's pitch-black eyes, searching for a trace of deception, a flicker of manipulation. But there was only cold, unyielding iron. He hadn't jailed me as a helpless prisoner; he had hidden me behind the absolute authority of an Alpha's claim."If you kept me alive," I rasped, my voice barely carrying over the distant blare of war horns outside, "then prove it now. Take me to the river."Zion didn't hesitate. "Get your armor."An hour later, six heavy warhorses thundered out through the northern gate of Ironfang Keep, their hooves kicking up clouds of grey frost against the jagged mountain trail.Zion rode at the front on a massive midnight-black stallion, clad in full obsidian plate armor that absorbed the morning light. I rode right beside him on a swift grey mare, encased in light star-steel mail beneath a heavy fur cloak. Flanking us were Beta Julius and four of Zion's elite Shad

His words hung in the cold war room like a freshly drawn blade.“They want me to execute you for it,” Zion repeated, his thumb still resting against the curve of my jaw, his thumb pressing just hard enough to feel the frantic, rabbit-fast thud of my pulse. My chest heaved against his heavy chest armor. Outside, the distant horns blared again—a low, mournful drone across the frozen valley—but inside the chamber, the silence was suffocating."If you know the banner is a fake, why lock down the keep?" I demanded, my voice sharp despite the adrenaline flooding my throat. "Why drag me into a war room surrounded by generals who want my head on a spike?""Because half those generals take silver from Silas," Zion growled, his obsidian eyes burning into mine with an intense, unyielding heat. "And the other half are stupid enough to believe whatever flag is flying across the river. If I don't give them a lockdown and an army on the march, they'll call it treason and try to take my crown before

The iron gates of Ironfang Keep slammed shut with a metallic boom that vibrated straight through the soles of my boots. Heavy chains rattled into place. Portcullises dropped like giant iron teeth along the perimeter walls, sealing the fortress off from the snowy valley below. Within ten minutes, Alpha Zion had placed the entire capital under martial lockdown. No one entered. No one left. Anyone caught near the outer ramparts without an officer’s pass was to be executed on sight. I stood on the stone balcony of the central command wing, the freezing mountain wind whipping my hair across my face. Down in the outer courtyards, hundreds of armored war-wolves were assembling in dark, disciplined ranks. Torches flared through the heavy morning fog, casting bloody reflections on silver shields and broadswords. They were preparing for war. Against my bloodline. My knuckles turned white as I gripped the freezing stone balustrade. The distant horn calls from the northern border post hadn't s

Morning arrived not with sunlight, but with a cold, suffocating fog that blanketed Ironfang Keep in grey ice.I didn't sleep. I sat beside the cold hearth, my back pressed against the stone wall, the silver blade resting across my knees. Every muscle in my body throbbed from the impact when I'd tackled Zion, but my wolf was wide awake, pacing beneath my skin like a caged beast. When the heavy iron bolt on the door finally retracted, it wasn't Zion who stepped into the room.It was Elder Silas, flanked by four elite guards clad in full black-iron armor."The sun is up, little surrogate," Silas rasped, his withered face twisting into a sinister smile as he leaned heavily on his ebony cane. "And the High Council does not wait.""I took a bolt for your Alpha last night, Elder," I said coldly, staying seated, my fingers tightening on the hilt of my hidden blade. "Where is Zion?""Alpha Zion is currently at the northern wall, dealing with the aftermath of last night's... unfortunate breach,

“I will ask you once more, Emerald,” he growled. “Where did a traitor’s daughter get the Royal Seal of the Kirby Lineage?”My wolf screamed at me to pull away, to draw the silver blade in my sleeve and put it in his throat, but I forced my face still.Panic would get me killed. I needed him to doubt me, not dismiss me.“I stole it,” I said. I looked straight into his black eyes and didn’t blink.Zion’s jaw tightened as his thumb pressed harder against the inner band of the ring. “You stole a royal house crest?”“My father was a commander before you stripped his rank,” I said. “When the High Council ordered the Kirby house slaughtered and the estate burned twenty years ago, my father was in the vanguard. He dragged a chest of scavenged jewelry back to the northern border.”I took a short breath and leaned into his space instead of pulling away.“I took it from his private stash when I was twelve,” I said. “I kept it because silver buys food when an exiled family is starving. I didn’t k
