Chapter Three

The sound of the iron bolt sliding back filled the lower stairwell.

I didn’t stand or reach for the silver blade stitched into my sleeve. I stayed cross-legged beside the hearth, my blood-crusted knees in a basin of warm water I’d dragged from the washstand. Glass shards came free with small wet pops and dropped into the basin, turning the water dark red.

The oak door swung open. Cold air from the corridor hit the room.

Alpha Zion stepped over the threshold. He’d stripped off his ceremonial armor. He wore a dark linen tunic open at the throat and heavy leather trousers. Without the steel, he looked no less dangerous. His black eyes swept the room, stopped on the bloody basin, then locked on mine.

“The pack doctors were delayed by Elder Silas,” he said. His voice filled the room without effort. “I came to inspect the binding marks myself.”

“How generous.” I didn’t cover my torn legs. “I didn’t realize managing captives was part of an Alpha’s duties.”

Zion didn’t answer. He crossed the room in three strides.

Before I could move, he caught my wrist and hauled me to my feet. My wolf surged against my ribs, furious and afraid. I clamped my jaw shut and forced my body still. The basin tipped behind me and bloody water spread across the stone.

“You’re bleeding on my floor again, Emerald,” he said. He pulled me half an inch closer.

“It’s your glass,” I said. “If you wanted a pristine surrogate, you shouldn’t have forced me to crawl.”

His eyes flickered amber. He didn’t release my wrist. His free hand came up and traced the curve of my collarbone, then slid to the raised skin at the base of my throat where the blood-pact seal pulsed gold.

His scent—cedar, pine, ozone—filled my senses. My pulse hammered against his thumb on my neck. I stared straight into his eyes and didn’t tremble.

“Your body is fighting the mark,” Zion said. He pressed his thumb into the glowing skin. A low growl rose in his chest. “Your wolf is rejecting my aura.”

“My wolf doesn’t like monsters,” I said. “She’s selective.”

His mouth tilted. “She’ll learn. The ritual requires three nights of binding. If your body rejects the power by dawn, the contract dissolves, your father dies at the border, and you become nothing.”

“Then stop talking and check the seal,” I said. “Or are you afraid touching a traitor’s daughter will pollute your hands?”

His grip on my neck tightened for one breath. He leaned down, lips an inch from mine.

“You have a lethal amount of pride, little wolf,” he whispered. “I wonder how long it will take me to break it.”

“Try it,” I whispered back. “You’ll break your hands first.”

Neither of us moved. His gaze dropped to my mouth, then rose back to my eyes. Something dark and focused entered his expression.

“You think this is a bargain,” he said. “You think you traded your father’s life for your body and walked away with the better end of it. You didn’t. The Council will test the seal at dawn. Silas will demand it. If the mark has spread to your heart, they will call it proof that your bloodline is corrupt and that the contract is void. They will kill your father before he reaches the border and put your head on the gate beside his.”

“Then you’ll lose your heir,” I said. “And the Succession Mandate will strip your title within ninety days. Silas gets what he wants without drawing a blade.”

Zion’s jaw tightened. “You’ve read the Council’s laws.”

“I’ve read everything they let my father keep before they took his command,” I said. “I know what happens to an Alpha who can’t produce a mate. I know Silas has been waiting for it. I know Sylvia Sterling’s bloodline is poison to your wolf. I know you’ve spent six months testing Omegas and burying the ones who couldn’t carry your aura. You need me alive. That makes us even.”

“We are not even,” Zion said. “You are a captive. Your father is a condemned traitor. The only reason you’re standing in this tower instead of a cell is because I allowed it.”

“Then inspect the mark and leave,” I said. “Or are you going to stand here all night telling me how much power you have?”

His hand slid off my throat. He reached for my right hand—the one with the secondary binding mark on the palm.

I pulled back. My left hand came up to cover my right thumb.

Zion’s eyes narrowed. He seized my wrist and twisted it upward before I could hide my fingers. My right hand was exposed, raw and bloodied. His gaze didn’t go to the contract mark in my palm. It locked onto my thumb.

My heart increased it's pace.

I had been tracing the inner band of my silver ring—a nervous habit I couldn’t stop when cornered. The ring had shifted, tilting outward just enough to expose the inner face of the band.

There, etched in tiny detail and dusted with dried blood, was the forbidden crest of the Royal Kirby House. A lion and a star. Outlawed twenty years ago on pain of death.

Zion looked like he was mapping something in his head. My wolf went silent.

His thumb brushed the blood from the silver. He stared at the emblem. Then his gaze rose from my hand to my face, black and cold.

“Where did you get this ring, Emerald?” His voice was dangerously soft.

I opened my mouth to lie, but his grip tightened until the silver bit into my flesh.

“Don’t lie to me,” he growled. He stepped close enough that his chest pressed against mine. “This is the Royal Seal of the Kirby Lineage. Who are you?”

The dark-fire boulder didn't hit us.Before the flaming mass could crash into our ridge, Zion swung his obsidian broadsword in a sweeping arc. A violent wall of pitch-black shadow erupted from the blade, catching the boulder mid-air and shattering it into a million harmless, smoking fragments that rained like black snow over the cliff edge. The shockwave whipped our cloaks back, but Zion's stallion didn't flinch an inch. He sat in the saddle like an ancient mountain god, his dark eyes locked on the enemy commander across the Black River gorge."Is that the best your ghost can throw, Garrett?" Zion roared, his voice carrying across the freezing canyon with the terrifying force of an absolute monarch.Across the gorge, on the elevated enemy ridge, Commander Garrett didn't flinch. He slowly lowered his double-headed battleaxe, his scarred face twisting into a cold, grim smile that we could see even through the spyglass. My heart pounded against my ribs. The realization of who was leading

My heart slammed against my ribs as the realization echoed in the silence of the war room.I stared into Zion's pitch-black eyes, searching for a trace of deception, a flicker of manipulation. But there was only cold, unyielding iron. He hadn't jailed me as a helpless prisoner; he had hidden me behind the absolute authority of an Alpha's claim."If you kept me alive," I rasped, my voice barely carrying over the distant blare of war horns outside, "then prove it now. Take me to the river."Zion didn't hesitate. "Get your armor."An hour later, six heavy warhorses thundered out through the northern gate of Ironfang Keep, their hooves kicking up clouds of grey frost against the jagged mountain trail.Zion rode at the front on a massive midnight-black stallion, clad in full obsidian plate armor that absorbed the morning light. I rode right beside him on a swift grey mare, encased in light star-steel mail beneath a heavy fur cloak. Flanking us were Beta Julius and four of Zion's elite Shad

His words hung in the cold war room like a freshly drawn blade.“They want me to execute you for it,” Zion repeated, his thumb still resting against the curve of my jaw, his thumb pressing just hard enough to feel the frantic, rabbit-fast thud of my pulse. My chest heaved against his heavy chest armor. Outside, the distant horns blared again—a low, mournful drone across the frozen valley—but inside the chamber, the silence was suffocating."If you know the banner is a fake, why lock down the keep?" I demanded, my voice sharp despite the adrenaline flooding my throat. "Why drag me into a war room surrounded by generals who want my head on a spike?""Because half those generals take silver from Silas," Zion growled, his obsidian eyes burning into mine with an intense, unyielding heat. "And the other half are stupid enough to believe whatever flag is flying across the river. If I don't give them a lockdown and an army on the march, they'll call it treason and try to take my crown before

The iron gates of Ironfang Keep slammed shut with a metallic boom that vibrated straight through the soles of my boots. Heavy chains rattled into place. Portcullises dropped like giant iron teeth along the perimeter walls, sealing the fortress off from the snowy valley below. Within ten minutes, Alpha Zion had placed the entire capital under martial lockdown. No one entered. No one left. Anyone caught near the outer ramparts without an officer’s pass was to be executed on sight. I stood on the stone balcony of the central command wing, the freezing mountain wind whipping my hair across my face. Down in the outer courtyards, hundreds of armored war-wolves were assembling in dark, disciplined ranks. Torches flared through the heavy morning fog, casting bloody reflections on silver shields and broadswords. They were preparing for war. Against my bloodline. My knuckles turned white as I gripped the freezing stone balustrade. The distant horn calls from the northern border post hadn't s

Morning arrived not with sunlight, but with a cold, suffocating fog that blanketed Ironfang Keep in grey ice.I didn't sleep. I sat beside the cold hearth, my back pressed against the stone wall, the silver blade resting across my knees. Every muscle in my body throbbed from the impact when I'd tackled Zion, but my wolf was wide awake, pacing beneath my skin like a caged beast. When the heavy iron bolt on the door finally retracted, it wasn't Zion who stepped into the room.It was Elder Silas, flanked by four elite guards clad in full black-iron armor."The sun is up, little surrogate," Silas rasped, his withered face twisting into a sinister smile as he leaned heavily on his ebony cane. "And the High Council does not wait.""I took a bolt for your Alpha last night, Elder," I said coldly, staying seated, my fingers tightening on the hilt of my hidden blade. "Where is Zion?""Alpha Zion is currently at the northern wall, dealing with the aftermath of last night's... unfortunate breach,

“I will ask you once more, Emerald,” he growled. “Where did a traitor’s daughter get the Royal Seal of the Kirby Lineage?”My wolf screamed at me to pull away, to draw the silver blade in my sleeve and put it in his throat, but I forced my face still.Panic would get me killed. I needed him to doubt me, not dismiss me.“I stole it,” I said. I looked straight into his black eyes and didn’t blink.Zion’s jaw tightened as his thumb pressed harder against the inner band of the ring. “You stole a royal house crest?”“My father was a commander before you stripped his rank,” I said. “When the High Council ordered the Kirby house slaughtered and the estate burned twenty years ago, my father was in the vanguard. He dragged a chest of scavenged jewelry back to the northern border.”I took a short breath and leaned into his space instead of pulling away.“I took it from his private stash when I was twelve,” I said. “I kept it because silver buys food when an exiled family is starving.
