PENIEL

The world tilted. I felt the blood drain from my face. "Gone?"

My knees buckled. I felt rather than saw the ground rush up to meet me, expecting to hit the hard ground I closed my eyes, except it didnt happen.

From the scent, I could tell I was in my mate's arms. Luciano had caught me. I opened my eyes and stared into the worried gaze of my mate.

He pulled me into his arms, dragging his gaze to meet Preya’s, “Did you notice anything else?”

Preya nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks. "There's... there was a note. Nailed to the table."

I didn't remember pushing out of Luciano's arms and taking off running. My legs just moved. Preya ran behind me, calling my name, but I couldn't hear her over the roar of the wind in my ears.

I got there and nearly wept all over again.

The cottage was a wreck. The comfortable chair was overturned. Herbs were scattered across the floor. A cup was shattered. And there, in the center of the small wooden table, was a dagger pinning a piece of rough

LUCIANOMy gaze darkened. I slowly dragged my eyes back to his. My wolf was at the surface, my vision sharpening, my anger just at the edge. “You’re hurting my mate,” I said, each word holding a promise of vengeance.“I’ll do worse!” he shrieked. “I swear!”I took a deep, steadying breath, letting him see me surrender. “Alright,” I said, my shoulders slumping slightly. “I swear to the Moon Goddess…”He leaned forward, desperation clouding his eyes. “Yes? Go on!”I smiled, a cruel, predatory twist of my lips. “…to give you a head start before I kill you.”His face whipped back, confusion swimming in his eyes. The words didn’t compute. A head start… before I kill you? That split-second of confusion was all we needed.Peniel didn’t wait for a signal. She threw her weight backward with all her strength. The wooden chair legs screeched against the stone floor. It tipped. Kael, caught off balance and already leaning backward, stumbled with her.The knife wavered, slicing a shallow line acro

LUCIANO“Baby, I need you to focus and look around. Tell me in clear details what's around you.’“Lucian…” her voice getting weaker by the second. “I hear… the river? The river. That was something. The west side of the territory had the river running along its edge. But that was still miles of riverbank.Peniel! But her voice was already fading, the connection stretching thin and then snapping. The dampener, or her strength gone.Bile, sharp and acidic, rose in my throat. I had no real direction. Just ‘west’ and ‘river’. And west was a huge area.“Rowan!” I linked, already beginning to run, my paws tearing up the forest floor. “Status! Did you reach the east location?”His voice came back, strained and punctuated by the sounds of combat. Still fighting, Alpha! Resistance is heavy! We haven’t breached the building yet!His voice came back, strained and punctuated by the sounds of combat. “We're still trying to neutralize the enemy, Alpha! Their resistance is heavy! We haven’t even brea

LUCIANO “Rowan!” I mind-linked the other man, the thought screaming through my head. “Change of plan! They're split up! East and west! I don't know which is which! Take your team east! Now!”“On it, Alpha!”I took a step toward the western direction, my body already coiling to run, to shift, to tear through the forest to find her.Silas's voice stopped me."Oh, I did forget to mention the catch," he said, and now a real, ugly smile touched his lips. "You have to get through me first."He didn't wait. His shift was fast and seamless. One second he was a man, the next a large, sleek wolf with fur the color of dried blood and eyes that glowed amber in the dark. He crouched, teeth bared."And Luciano?" Henry's voice came from the side. He was shifting too, his own wolf form emerging, grizzled and gray but still powerful. "There's a time limit. If you're not fast enough… well, you can imagine."Two against one. In the middle of enemy woods. And my mate was waiting in one direction, her li

LUCIANOAcross the crowded ballroom, near a side door, being escorted by two large warriors, was a woman in a simple blue gown , her face cast down. She lifted her face for a second, scanning the room. I sucked in a breath, recognising who it was.It was Nadia. Our eyes met.Her expression filled with pure terror. Then one of the guards yanked her back, and she disappeared through the door. I blinked, processing it all in.She wasn’t in the cellar. She was here. In the ballroom. And they were moving her.The confirmation slammed something into me. The cellar had been a decoy. Kael's tip, whether well-intentioned or not, was part of the diversion. They were playing a game, and they were already two steps ahead of us.I had just sent part of my rescue team to the wrong place. And now my mate's mother was being taken deeper into the beast's lair, and I was alone in a room half of it filled with my enemies. And the worst part, I still didn't know where my mate was being kept.My mind was

HENRYDays before the ball.Silas tried to kill me the moment I walked into the abandoned warehouse. I saw the knife in his hand before he even moved. Young, arrogant pup.“I don’t need a washed-up Alpha’s help,” he sneered, circling me. “Your own daughter humiliated you. Your pack is gone. You’re nothing.”I kept my hands visible, my expression calm. “You need me,” I said, my voice steady. “Because you’re smart, but you’re not cruel enough. Not yet. You want Luciano’s pack, but you don’t know how to break him. I do.”He paused, the knife hovering. “And how’s that?”“You hurt his mate, he gets angry. You kill his mate, he gets vengeful. But if you use his mate to make him fail… to make him watch her suffer because of his own mistakes… that breaks an Alpha. That shatters him. And I know how to make her suffer. She’s my blood. I know every weak spot.”Silas watched me, his cold eyes calculating. After a long moment, he lowered the knife. “Start talking.”A few days later I stood in the

LUCIANOSilas’s eyes glinted with malice. “How very… dramatic.” He drawled, ignoring my last words. “Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. The full moon is a time for peace, after all. For celebration.” He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping. “Enjoy the party, Luciano. Try the wine. It’s a special vintage.”He moved away, Kael following behind him like a ghost. I watched them go, my hands clenched at my sides.“Rowan, report.”“The basement is clear so far, Alpha. Moving to the lower storage.Time was slipping away. I moved through the crowd, smiling stiffly, exchanging mindless pleasantries, alwhile my mind was screaming.I forced myself to walk deeper, back into the ballroom. The music and laughter were only served to churn the dread in my gut. I needed to use this time. I needed eyes and ears.I began to make the rounds, moving through the crowd with a purpose. I wasn't here to dance. I was here to map the alliances in the room.My first stop was Alpha Donovan of the Stone Ridge P
