“No… not Peniel, not my baby,” Mom sobbed, collapsing to the floor, her arms wrapped around Dad’s legs like her life depends on it.
His face twisted with rage, and without mercy, he kicked her in the ribs.
“Mom!” I cried, frozen behind the bedroom window, my voice cracking with fear.
“Shut up!” he roared, kicking her again.
Mom jerked from the blow, but didn’t scream, she was swallowing the pain.
“You useless woman! You think you can stop me, Nadia? You can’t! I swear, I’ll drag that foolish daughter of yours to the Alpha myself!” he shouted, his voice echoing through the house.
Mom coughed, blood spilling from her lips. Her body trembled, but her eyes held determination.
Slowly, she painfully lifted her head. Her face was pale, streaked with tears and blood, and i gasped covering my mouth as I watched her helplessly.
“To keep your title as the most powerful Alpha of our time, you sold your own child as a treaty to a ruthless Alpha? How evil can you be? You monster!” Mom screamed, her voice trembling with fury.
And immediately, a thunderous slap landed on her face. But he wasn’t done, he grabbed her by the neck, lifting her off the ground, choking her. Still, she didn’t back down.
“I… I’d rather die than watch you do this to my daughter,” she gasped, her voice barely audible, her eyes flickering.
Tears blurred my vision, but I couldn’t just stand there anymore. I ran inside, my heart pounding against my ribcage. This wasn’t the first time I’d seen Mom like this, but I’d never get used to it.
“Mom,” I whispered, tears streaming down my cheeks.
She looked at me, her eyes pleading, her trembling hand weakly waving me away. She wanted me to leave, but I couldn’t.
I wouldn’t.
I turned to face the man who didn’t care if she lived or died.
“Dad, please stop! You’re hurting her!” I cried, desperation in my voice. But he didn’t even glance at me.
I wanted to fight him, scream at him, make him feel the pain he’d caused us all these years. But I knew better. He wasn’t just my father, he was the Alpha. The one no one dared challenge.
“Alpha Henry Diego!” I shouted, and he froze.
He froze, with my mom’s body dangling in the air, his hands clasped tightly around her fragile and battered body.
“What did you just call me?” he snapped, his eyes narrowing.
I didn’t answer. Instead, I whispered, “I’ll do it.”
“You’ll do what?” he growled, stepping closer.
I took a shaky breath, trying not to fall apart in front of him.
He was my father by blood, but never for once has he even been a father to me, or a husband to my mom. He was a tyrant I wanted nothing to do with. And the worst part? Everyone in the pack admired me, looked up to me without knowing how often I wished I could trade places with them. Just to have a normal life. A real family.
“I agree,” I said through clenched teeth. “I’ll be your treaty to Alpha Luciano.”
“No… baby, no…” Mom’s cries filled the room as he flung her against the wall, and he stormed towards me, while moved backwards fearfully, until my back was touching the wall.
“You’re not just a treaty, sweetheart,” he sneered. “You’ll be whatever he wants. His maid. His toy. His bedmate.” My heart stopped, and I stared at him, horrified.
“I-I can’t… No…”
He laughed coldly, reaching out to touch a strand of my hair. I could feel his burning hatred digging deep into my soul. How could a father hate his own child?
“You think you have a choice?” he hissed. “Even your mother doesn’t. She’s just collateral damage. Your bags are packed. The driver’s on his way. And when he gets here… you’re gone.”
I shook my head, tears falling freely now. But deep down, I knew, this nightmare was only beginning.
“Think carefully, dearest… or your mother,” he said coldly, pointing at her limp body on the floor.
“N…no, don’t hurt her,” I said fearfully and he smirked,
“Good girl,” he said, patting my shoulder like I was some obedient pet.
Then he smirked. “Make sure you catch his eye. Alpha Luciano isn’t easy to impress, but no man can resist a beautiful woman’s body.”
I felt sick, disgusted at his shamelessness.
“Alpha Henry,” I called, using his title instead of “Dad.” He stopped.
“Promise me she’ll be okay,” I said quietly, barely holding myself together.
“She will… depending on your performance. Now go. Your ride is here,” he said, motioning toward the window.
I looked out and saw the maid loading my luggage into the car.
I sighed and I turned to leave, but he called out again. “Dear… make me proud.”
I wanted to spit in his face, cursed the day I became his daughter, Instead, I walked away, knowing I had no power against him.
I got downstairs and I walked to the car that was waiting for me, the driver opened the car door. I climbed in, and he drove off.
I stared at the house until it disappeared from view. My heart felt heavy as I couldn’t stop thinking about my Mom. How would she survive with that monster? Would I ever see her again?
The questions haunted me the entire ride.
When we arrived, I stepped out and looked around. The mansion was massive, far grander than my father’s. Every inch screamed wealth and power.
No wonder he sold me off. He couldn’t defeat Alpha Luciano like he had with other packs, so he offered me instead.
A treaty to boost his image. And now… I belonged to someone else.
“This way, ma’am,” the driver said, leading me into the towering mansion.
As I stepped inside, my eyes widened. Nearly twenty young women stood scattered across the grand hall. I lingered at the back, wondering if they too had been sold off by their fathers like I had, and a small part of me felt relief that I wasn’t alone.
Then, a movement caught my eye.
A man began descending the staircase, draped in a long black robe. Beside him was a woman in a red floral gown. Their faces were hidden weren’t visible at first, but something about the way he walked demanded attention and I couldn’t look away.
As he stepped into the light, his face came into view, he was manly and tall, broad-shouldered, with piercing blue eyes and dark curls that fell partly over his face. He looked almost unreal, like something carved from the moonlight. But beneath that beauty, I could feel the dark aura enemating from him.
And as I continued staring at him, my breath hitched as his blue eyes ran into mine. It was surprising that despite the crowd he noticed me. I shook slightly as it felt like there was a magnet pulling the both of us together.
Something I’d never felt before.
“Mate! Mate!” a voice echoed in my head, jubilating, while I stood frozen, stunned. This couldn’t be real.
But it was.
“Arghhh!” I screamed as sharp pain shot through my head and legs.
I collapsed to my knees, gasping. My eyes darted around until they landed on a guard standing close, gripping a whip.
“How dare you!” The guard shouted, his eyes burning with fury.
I blinked, confused. What had I done?
Then I saw it…everyone else was kneeling, heads bowed before Alpha Luciano. I’d been so lost in thought, I hadn’t noticed.
I closed my eyes, panic rising in my chest, I knew what this meant. My father wouldn’t forgive me if I messed this up.
“Please, Lord…” I whispered under my breath.
“You worthless girl! Take her to the dungeon!” the woman beside Alpha Luciano snapped. Her voice was cruel, like she enjoyed watching others suffer.
“No, please! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…” I tried to explain, but the guards didn’t care. They grabbed me roughly, dragging me across the floor.
Tears welled up in my eyes. I hadn’t even been here an hour, and I was already being punished. What would I tell my father? What about my mom? Would she be okay? I felt dizzy, overwhelmed by fear.
Then, a voice cut through the chaos.
“Stop. Take her to my room.” Immediately everyone went silent.
My heart skipped. “His room?” I repeated the words in my head, stunned.
Why? What did he mean by that?
PENIEL“Where is Preya?” I asked suddenly. The question slicing through the tension in the air.Silas blinked in confusion, then his eyes widened in realization. He turned and snapped at a nearby she-wolf. "Find the maid Preya. Now."The she-wolf scurried off. She returned only a few minutes later, her expression uneasy. “She is not in her room, Beta. No one has seen her since this afternoon.” she whispered into his ears.Silas turned back to me, his expression grave. "Preya is also missing." He said, stating the obvious like I wasn't three feet away from him.Of course she was. The pieces must have finally clicked together in his mind because he asked, “You think they went together?”“I know they went together.”“It is… very possible,” Silas said carefully, avoiding my eyes. “Especially as they seemed to have bonded. During the… during the period she.. you know arrived, and then everything…” he trailed off.He didn’t need to finish. During the time she needed her mate, and I was too
PENIELThe nagging feeling started as a tightness in my chest while we were searching the northern woods. We had been searching for hours, sweeping in a wide grid for any sign of Peniel's mother. The night was cold and silent, broken only by the sounds of my warriors moving through the bushes.By the time the sun had begun to set, it had spread, hurting like a physical ache. I ignored it, pushing it down, as we combed the woods. It was just worry. Just the leftover anger from the fight with Peniel. Just the strain of knowing Henry was out there, dread of what Henry might have already done to her mother. It was just the ache from the fight with Peniel. She had shut me out completely. After our fight, she’d slammed the door between our minds. I couldn't feel her at all, not her fear, not her anger, just a blank, silent wall where my mate should have been. She thinks I don’t care. The thought echoed in my head, bitter and sharp. She thinks I’d let her mother die to keep her safe. Doesn
PENIELA test. He was watching, or listening, to see if I had brought anyone.“I’m alone!” I called out, my voice bouncing off the stone walls. “Just like you wanted! Now, where is she? Where is my mother?”Silence. No one answered.I looked past the stool. The tunnel continued on the other side of the cavern. But written on the wall in what looked like mud were the words:THE MOON’S EYE SEES THE TRUTH.The moon’s eye? What was that supposed to mean? The moon… it was out tonight. Did its light… did it shine down here? I looked up. There were thin cracks in the ceiling of the cavern, and faint moonlight filtered through in one spot, creating a small, bright circle on the far wall. The moon’s eye. That spot of light.I walked over to where the light touched the wall. The beam was so bright it made the surrounding stone look even darker. I ran my hands over the wall inside the circle of light. There, almost invisible unless the light touched it, was a narrow, vertical crack in the stone.
PENIELI lifted the trapdoor, coughing as plumes of dust rose up. Peering into the darkness, I debated with myself for a bit, then fuck it! I was heading in.But first, I looked around the edge of the trapdoor. And was thankful I did, cause scratched into the wooden frame was another clue. This one a riddle. I stared at the riddle scratched into the wood. My mind felt slow, clogged with fear.I'm as small as an ant, as big as a whale. I'll approach like a breeze, but can come like a gale. By some I get hit, but all have shown fear. I'll dance to the music, though I can't hear. Of names I have many, of names I have one. I'm as slow as a snail, but from me you can't run.The words swirled in my head, a confusing poem in the flickering candlelight. Something that could be big or small… something that comes gently or with force… something people fear and can’t escape. What could it be? I tried to think like him, like my father. He loved games that made him feel smarter than everyone else.
