INICIAR SESIÓNAubrey, be calm. I kept saying that to myself after the alpha’s weird question. I had read about mates, and I knew damn well how important werewolves value their mate. But the issue at that moment was how he could smell his mate on me. I could swear I had no contact with any female wolf on my way to the pack.
“How’s that even possible?” Jeremy asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I drew in a deep breath. “I think you are mistaken, alpha.”
“Mistaken?” He asked in a cold tone, his eyes never leaving mine. “It’s a scent I’ve never smelled before, so how can I be mistaken?”
Could it be the cream? What exactly did the director give to me? “If you can smell your mate on me, what does that mean?”
“Two things!” Jeremy chirped, folding his hands over his chest. “One, you must be very close to his mate for you to have her smell on you.”
I cocked my head with my eyebrows raised, implying that he continued speaking. “Secondly,” he continued. “The moon goddess just blessed the alpha with a gay mate, which is you.”
I shook my head in disbelief at what he had just said. A gay mate? “But, I’m straight though.” I exchanged glances between Jeremy and Logan, wondering if Logan was not straight.
“I’m straight too,” Logan quickly said, as if reading my thoughts.
Jeremy giggled. He was enjoying the sight before him. “So, what now?”
Logan retracted and went straight to his table, topic: a pen and a note. Jeremy and I watched in confusion as he placed the pen and paper in my hands. “I want their names and their address.”
“Excuse me?”
“Everyone you came in contact with before getting here. I want their contact and their addresses,” Logan said, and I could tell he was serious from his tone.
How was I supposed to do that? I guess I could do that as an NIS agent. But I was just a normal wolfie secretary at that point. How was I supposed to investigate strangers I met a few hours ago?
“Add your relatives to the list, too,” Logan added.
Jeremy cleared his throat and moved closer to Logan. “He’s an orphan.”
Right! Aub was an orphan before he went missing.
“Anyway, start writing,” Logan commanded. There was something about his commanding tone that was different from how he had been conversing with me since I stepped into his office.
I gently ruffled my hair since I had a wig on, and I didn’t want it to fall off. “I’m sorry, but it would be hard for me to get what you are asking for done.”
“Are you trying to defile me?!” I flinched at how deadly his voice sounded. How long had he been desperate for his mate to make me write names of strangers I met on my way to the pack?
“I….”
The sound of the door opening interrupted what I was about to say. They really didn’t take knocking seriously. I recognized the man who stepped through the door as the alpha beta. He’s Nathan, the alpha’s right man. He was the one the director told me to be most wary of after the alpha because he was highly suspicious in nature.
“Alpha,” Nathan bowed slightly before Logan. “I heard you found your mate.”
What!?
I shifted my gaze to the alpha, whose gaze was on Jeremy. I guessed Jeremy was the snitch. How could he!?
“I didn’t say he found his mate. I said he’s about to,” Jeremy said in his defense, smiling sheepishly, like calling in a third party wasn’t such a big deal.
“We don’t know for sure if I actually met his mate on my way here, so it’s rather too early to say he’s about to find his mate,” I decided to correct Jeremy.
Logan’s eyes darkened, and he took a step closer to me, towering above my little frame. “Should I take that as your will not to be cooperative?”
What did he mean?
“Of course, I’m here to help out and cooperate on whatever assignment you have for me as your secretary,” I said, giving him a big smile to see if that would lighten his dark eyes a bit. I was wrong.
He smirked. “Did you even ask around about me before setting foot in my office?"
Of course, I read about him. He’s not exactly someone to be messed with, and I knew how capable he was that he could take my life with just a snap of his fingers. I wouldn’t underestimate someone who’s been investigated for a serial murder case.
“Just do as you are told,” Nathan said. I eventually got the chance to take a proper look at him, and he was good-looking as well. But it was as good-looking as Logan. I guessed the werewolves were blessed with beautiful genes. Maybe if my ex were as handsome as they were, I’d have given him a second chance.
“Bullshit!”
“Bullshit!?” Jeremy exclaimed.
Shit! I quickly placed my hands over my mouth. I didn’t realize I had said my thoughts out loud. I couldn’t bring my habit of thinking out loud there with me.
“I mean, I’ll do it,” I had to say something that would cover up my mistake. I should have known nothing good would come out of thinking about my stupid ex.
“Listen to me,” Logan started. “If you want to work here for a long time as my secretary, you need to do a good job at finding whoever left that scent on you before coming here.”
I bowed my head slightly. “Yes, alpha.”
I raised my head, only to see Nathan eyeing me suspiciously. What was his deal?
“Are you sure he’s cut out for this secretary position?” Was he kidding me?
“Why?” Jeremy beat me to it.
“I mean, look at his body and all. He looks too frail to handle heavy tasks. He’s going to always be by the alpha’s side; he needs to at least be a good fighter,” he defended his statement without batting an eye.
Of course, I was a good fighter, but he didn’t need to know that.
“Just let him be for now since he has to figure out who my mate is,” Logan interjected. "You know how much I want to find my mate.” Nathan kept his cool after Logan’s words. I was right about him being desperate to find his mate.
Jeremy walked over to me and placed his hands across my shoulders. “You’ve got some ladies to investigate, buddy!”
I gave him a half smile that barely reached my face. The only person I’d be investigating is Logan, the alpha of Silvermoon pack, for a serial murder case.
I’d been away from the pack, driving for almost two hours, but I couldn’t shake off the uneasy feelings I’d woken up with. It started the previous night, nagging in the back of my mind. And the more I drew closer to the NIS, the stronger it got. Kate hadn't replied to my email.I pulled over at a rest stop and grabbed my phone, scrolling through my messages. Nothing. No missed calls, no texts, no emails. The last communication I'd had from her was over a week ago. I hadn’t even gotten a chance to tell her about all that’d happened between Logan and me. That wasn't like Kate. She was meticulous about staying in contact, especially when I was on a mission. Even when she was busy, she'd send a quick message to always check up on me. It only stopped when she said she wasn’t sure if her calls and texts were being monitored by the director. And that was why we decided to start conversing when she was off the clock. I opened my messages and typed quickly.Me: Kate, I'm on my way back to
AubreyI stood in front of the mirror, adjusting my wig for what felt like the hundredth time. My bag was packed, the tracking device tucked safely in my pocket. Everything was ready. So why did I feel like I was leaving something important behind?I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. I had a mission to complete, a director to confront, and a life to reclaim. Logan and whatever happened between us at the spring could wait.Had to wait.A knock on my door pulled me from my thoughts."Come in," I called out.Logan stepped in, his expression carefully neutral. "Ready?"I nodded, slinging my bag over my shoulder. "As ready as I'll ever be.""Good." He gestured toward the door. "I've gathered some of the senior pack members in the main hall. I'm going to make it seem like I'm assigning you an official task, so no one gets suspicious about why you're leaving.""Smart."We walked down the hallway in silence. The tension between us was thick, suffocating. I wanted to say something, t
LoganI arrived at the spring thirty minutes early. I couldn't help it. My wolf had been restless all day, pacing back and forth in my mind ever since I sent that text.I stared at the water, watching the moonlight dance across its surface. What was I doing? Aubrey was leaving in two days. She had a life to get back to, a dangerous situation to handle. And here I was, asking her to meet me in the middle of the night like some lovesick teenager. But I couldn't help it. Ever since her confession this morning, ever since I saw her real face, her real eyes, something had shifted inside me. My wolf knew what it was and had been trying to tell me for weeks. I just hadn't been ready to listen. The sound of footsteps made me turn. And there she was.Her hair was down, flowing past her shoulders in thick waves that caught the moonlight. Without the contacts, her blue eyes seemed to glow in the darkness. Fully mesmerizing and ethereal. She was breathtaking."You came," I said, trying to keep my
I was almost at my office when my phone beeped in my hand. It was a text from Logan. Without hesitating, I opened it.Logan: Let's meet at the spring behind the pack house, where Jeremy saw you about a month ago. You don't have to come in disguise. And take off your contacts, too. I love your eyes. 1:00 a.m.I chuckled after reading the message. It wasn't hard to tell he struggled with putting his sentences together.Of course, I'd be there. There were a few things I needed to put straight with Logan. The rest of the day dragged on painfully slow. Every time I looked at the clock, only a few minutes had passed. I tried to focus on the paperwork Logan had assigned me, but my mind kept wandering to what he might want to talk about.By the time dinner rolled around, I could barely eat. My roommates noticed."Are you okay?" Lucas asked, staring at my barely touched plate.I nodded quickly. "Just tired, I guess."Steve raised an eyebrow. "You've been staring at that piece of meat for ten m
Jeremy once told me I’d be shocked to see Aubrey’s eyes. He didn’t tell them the details, and I never asked. He didn’t warn me that I could get hypnotized. I’d seen people with blue eyes, but Aubrey’s own were on another level. Her eyes were captivating and gorgeous, so I was too stunned to speak. “Why is everyone looking at me like I’m being weird?” Aubrey’s voice cut through the silence. “I only took out my wig, please.”I shook my head slightly. “Your eyes…”I failed to complete my statement because words failed me. Aubrey brought her hand to her face, slightly touching her eyes. “Oh,” she muttered. “I shouldn’t have taken my contacts off. It does send people off.”I could sense the nervousness in her voice. Did she misquote me?Nathan cleared his throat. “It’s fine. We were just a bit surprised, since we didn’t know you’ve been wearing contacts all along.”“Sorry,” she said, lowering her head as she tried to fix the contact lenses. “You can be yourself here,” Jeremy stated, hi
No one dared speak after his command. Not even I. I didn't have the gut to speak when Logan was angry."You can't leave, Aubrey," Logan said, his voice still filled with anger but a bit softer. It wasn't the time for that, but I still loved the way my name rolled off his lips.I folded my arms over my chest. "You can't tell me not to leave."The room went silent again."I don't know why you are being like this, but I promised to protect you," Logan's voice cut through the silence.I shifted uncomfortably in my seat. "Because I'm your mate?""Yes," he replied, drawing a sharp breath."Then reject me," I retorted. "That would make it easy for everyone."The words hung in the air like a sharp blade. Jeremy's eyes widened, and even Nathan looked uncomfortable.Logan's face went completely blank, which was somehow worse than his anger. "What did you just say?""You heard me," I said, forcing my voice to remain steady even though my heart was racing. "Reject me. That way, you can marry Jan
