ELOWYN

“My dearest Luna. The one who stood by me when I had been too wounded for company. The one who nursed me and sat beside my bed until I began to feel whole again… This is how I have chosen to reward you…”

Alpha Kieran muttered, slinging one leg over Sabrina’s and pulling her closer.

I shut my eyes and tried not to cry. After the ceremony, Sabrina had chosen me as her maidservant and ordered that I remain in the chamber while she and the Alpha consummated their bond.

She hadn’t only stolen my dress and the place that should have been mine, she was now going to make me watch as the Alpha claimed her body in the sacred act of mating.

I watched as the Alpha’s hands moved over the bodice of her gown, his eyes closed, his expression intent as though he were seeing her with his senses. His long, capable hands trailed slowly down her stomach, and my own body clenched as though it were me he was touching.

When his fingers reached the hem of the gown I had worn earlier today and began to bunch it upward, I felt a longing moan catch in my throat.

His hands slipped between her thighs. Sabrina trembled, her eyes fluttering closed as she surrendered herself to the Alpha’s touch. His fingers grazed the band of her panties, and she let out a low, helpless moan.

The Alpha grinned in satisfaction, then guided her lips to his. Pain and arousal throbbed through my veins as I stood there, a silent witness to the scene unfolding before me. I wanted to move. I wanted to slip quietly to the door and leave.

But Sabrina had warned me. If I took even a single step toward that door, she would punish me like a traitor. I couldn't risk the Luna’s wrath. Or worse, the Alpha’s.

If Sabrina said I was to watch, then I had no choice but to stand there while the man who once might have chosen me gave his body to someone else.

He kissed her gently at first.

"You taste like spring water and rain," he whispered against her lips, before deepening the kiss, his passion flaring, hands moving to her chest, cupping her breasts.

"I am going to make love to you right now, songbird. He rasped, his voice reaching my ear, that familiar name he had often called me while I tended his wounds hitting me between my chest.

I covered my mouth with my hands, trying to muffle my cries. I couldn’t take it anymore. I turned to face the wall, unwilling to watch them any longer.

This was deliberate. Sabrina had done all of this knowing I had a real chance of being chosen. She wanted what could have been mine, and she had gotten it.

So while the man who might have been mine made love to someone else, I stood there in silence, crying, as their bond deepened with every sigh and gasp.

"You taste so fucking good," he growled. "You taste just like I imagined. Like wild earth. Musky. Perfect."

"Ah..." Sabrina moaned, her voice breathy as the Alpha continued to pleasure her. Even though I had turned away, I couldn’t block out the sound of their desire. It wrapped around me like chains.

"Feel it, dearest," he whispered. "Feel what you do to me. Now, I’m going to fuck you like I’ve always wanted to. Like I’ve dreamed of since the moment you walked into my chambers and silently tended to me."

My breath caught.

I waited, hoping for a  moment that this could be the point where the alpha would realize the deception that was going on. I had never said anything while I tended to the alpha's wounds, afraid that if I did, I will be sought after and beheaded

"I want to mate with you right now, songbird," he said, his voice low and rough. "My member pulses with want, and I’m on the verge of tearing your clothes off and pressing your skin to mine... but I need to hear your voice. You never spoke to me while you tended to me, but I want to know now. I need to know what you sound like. I need to remember it. Call my name, dearest Luna."

I turned slowly.

And I saw it, panic settling into Sabrina’s face. She turned, and our eyes met. Her eyes narrowed into something venomous, and I quickly looked away.

The Alpha was waiting. His hand still rested at the juncture of her thighs.

"Are you afraid, songbird?" he husked against her ear. "Do not be afraid... I will bring you no harm."

Sabrina shut her eyes and whimpered as the Alpha resumed the movement of his fingers.

"Say it, Luna," he growled, the tension in his voice sharp. "Say my name."

Her whimpers grew louder, almost desperate.

"I won’t ask again, little flower." His voice dropped, edged with threat.

My heart beat so loudly I was afraid it would betray me.

"K-Kieran!" Sabrina shrieked, her body spasming as she reached her climax. Her legs clamped shut around his hand, trapping him there.

"Again," the Alpha commanded.

"Kieran... Alpha Kieran... my Alpha," she whispered. "My mate."

Her eyes flew open, and I saw it then, real fear, rising in her like a tide she couldn’t escape.

The Alpha tensed.

Silence fell over the room like fog. I watched sweat map Sabrina's forehead as she waited for the alpha's next words.

Then, a low growl rumbled from deep within his chest. Animalistic. Ravenous.

"Yes, my Luna," he said, voice rough and wanting. "I will have you now. I must have you now."

That was it.

I couldn’t take it anymore.

I didn't care whether Sabrina would behead me and decorate her dinner table with my remains. I couldn't stand to watch this another second.

I turned, flung the door open, and ran, tears spilling down my face like blood from a wound I couldn’t hide anymore.

ELOWYN I remained in the alpha’s embrace until the sun began to go down. The orange light from the setting sun slanted through the tall windows, spilling over the bed and bathing his skin in soft gold. The alpha didn’t let go of me. His arm stayed around my waist, heavy and warm, his breath brushing my neck. He held me like I mattered, like he would never let me go, and kissed me tenderly at intervals. It was the most beautiful time I had ever had with anyone, and one I knew I would never forget. When the alpha slumbered, I stayed awake, drinking him in. My fingers traced the strong line of his jaw, the roughness of faint stubble, stubble, and the fullness of his lips. His eyes were closed and his breathing was slow and even. He looked peaceful, almost gentle, nothing like the fierce man everyone feared outside these walls. He was the most beautiful man alive. The fact that he had gone through everything he had and yet still carried kindness somewhere deep inside him was something I g

Fuck my tongue. He says, slipping his tongue into my tight entrance. I arched my hips as intense pleasure ran through me.I had never experienced anything like this. I didn't know that my body could come alive in this manner. CHAPTER SIXTY-ONEBETSYThe smell hit me before I reached the door. Damp stone. Rust. Blood. I had smelled it before, but it never got easier. The guards didn’t look at me as they let me through. They knew why I was here. Everyone did.I stepped into the cell. The light was dim, coming from a torch outside the bars. David was there, sitting on the floor with his back against the wall. His head was bowed. His shirt was torn. Bruises marked his face and neck. Dried blood streaked the corner of his mouth. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. My legs shook as I moved closer. “David,” I whispered. He lifted his head slowly. One eye was swollen shut. The other found me. Even through the pain, there was that same gentle look. “Betsy,” he said, his voice rough.I dropped to my knees beside him. My throat burned. I reached for him, but he flinched when my hand brushed his arm. I pulled back, tears blurring my sight. “They did this to you again,” I said. “They’re not even letting you heal.”He smi

CHAPTER SIXTY SABRINAOwen walked into the room and stopped. His jaw was tight. He did not sit. He did not smile. I felt the muscle at my throat tighten.“Well?” I asked. He bowed once. “The Alpha will not be disturbed,” he said.I heard the words, and something hot rose in my chest. I screamed. The sound left me before I thought about it. It was sharp and raw. I wanted Owen to feel the edge of my anger.“He ordered that no one enter his chambers,” Owen said. He kept his voice low. He did not look away.I stood up so fast the chair hit the floor. “That stupid girl,” I hissed. “She disobeyed me. I told her to stay away. I told her every rule. And she still dares to lie in his bed all morning?”My hands tighten into fists of their own volition. The girl's stubborn foolishness is something I can no longer tolerate. “Kill her,” I said. “The moment you catch her alone, kill her.”Owen did not move. He did not blink. He looked absolutely calm, the sort of calm that belied the rage that bub

His body was warm against mine, and his steady breathing made me calm.It was the first time in a long while that I felt wanted for who I was. The alpha’s touch was gentle. His hold on me said more than any words could. He wasn’t just seeking warmth or comfort. He was letting me know that I mattered to him.Nothing could spoil that feeling. Not Sabrina’s cruel looks or Owen’s hard glare.I felt like I was on top of the world. Nothing could kill the happiness that flowed through me.Then, a knock sounded on the door, making my heart skip. My body went tense, and I tried to slide out of the alpha’s arms. But Kieran pulled me even closer, his eyes still closed.“Who is there?” the alpha asked when a second knock came. His tone was firm and clear.“It is Owen, Alpha.”I went still. He was really here to drag me out of the alpha’s arms. Sabrina had said that my only duty was to warm the alpha’

CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHTELOWYN"Shhh. You do not have to say anything. I am not sure I want you to. Just sleep beside me; let me feel the warmth of your body and the steadiness of your breath," the alpha said, pulling me closer. His words sank deep inside me. I felt my chest lighten. I pressed closer to him, careful not to brush against the wound on his side. The scent of herbs filled the space between us, soft and clean, reminding me of home.Father had used these herbs so much and so frequently that they'd clung to him, and somehow, they had become ingrained in him. And then, as time had passed, home had begun to smell just like Father too. The perfect mix of herbs. I inhaled more deeply and imagined home. I imagined Father's kind eyes and the constant slump in his shoulder. 8 remembered the way he looked at me, like I was a painful yet beautiful reminder of the woman he had lost. His breath warmed the side of my face. I shut my eyes and let myself drift, listening to the slow rhythm
