ELOWYN

"Where are you going?" The guard posted outside the Alpha's door asked as he stepped forward, blocking my path.

"I need time to myself," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"The Luna commanded that you remain in the chamber with her until the mating activity is finished," he said firmly. "I cannot allow you to leave."

He stood tall and immovable, clad in the traditional leathers of the Ornyth guard, his blonde hair matched his blonde eyebrow, and he looked less menacing than most of the guards around the palace. He couldn't have been more than a few years older than me.

"The Luna is perfectly safe with the Alpha," I said quickly. "I just need a few minutes. Alone."

His eyes narrowed as he stepped closer, noticing the tears I was trying really hard to hide. Have you been crying."

I hastily wiped at my cheeks. "No. I haven't." That was a really stupid lie. But the guard didn't call me out on that. Instead, he looked upon me with pity.

"Were you hoping the Alpha would choose you?" he asked quietly, his eyes raking over my plain dress and tired face. "You're not royalty. You have no gifts. And from what I've heard, you can't even shift. And you're not a warrior too."

I braced myself for cruelty, but none came. His voice wasn’t mocking, just... honest.

"The Alpha was never meant to choose you," he said. "But you don't have to cry about it. There are strong men in the Ornyth pack who would choose a girl like you. You have the prettiest and longest hair I’ve ever seen on a woman. And you're quite easy on the eye."

I nodded slowly, surprised by the unexpected kindness. "Thank you."

"My name is Seth," he added.

"I’m Elowyn," I whispered.

He nodded, then tilted his head toward the chamber door. "Go back inside. Don’t let her punish you. Not on your first day."

He was right. I was never meant to be Luna. I had no wolf. No strength. No destiny forged in moonlight or glory. I was Elowyn, daughter of a healer, born soft in a world of claw and fang.

I turned to go back inside, steeling myself for whatever came next.

But the door flew open before I could touch it. Sabrina stood there in a silk robe, her eyes gleaming with anger.

"What are you doing out here?" she snapped.

My heart raced.

"I’m sorry, my Luna," I said, bowing my head low. "I needed the loo. I was just returning."

She crossed her arms. "The instruction was that you remain inside until the mating was over. Are you always this disobedient and incompetent?"

I shook my head, my voice low and rueful. "No, my Luna. I didn’t mean to disobey. It won’t happen again. Please... forgive me."

She smiled, but there was nothing soft in it.

"You’re forgiven. But you will still be punished."

Before I could reply, Alpha Kieran appeared beside her, his towering frame filling the doorway. He brushed a finger gently along her cheek fondly.

"What is it, my love?" he asked, voice low, intimate.

She smiled at me, a wicked glint in her eyes, before turning sweetly to him.

"I hired a maid who’s not very good at her duties," she said. "I asked her to stay close so she could run us a bath after. But she left to collect flowers for her hair."

My eyes widened at the blatant lie. I opened my mouth to speak, but she reached out and gripped my arm, her nails digging deep into my skin.

"I dare you to argue," she hissed, her voice pure venom. "Go on. Try it."

Then, with a syrupy smile, she turned back to the Alpha.

"Come, Songbird. Let the guards deal with the servant. Come back to bed with me."

"I will do as you’ve said, my Alpha," she purred, dropping my arm as though I carried a disease.

"Guards!" she called, and two more appeared.

"Take her to the holding cell. No food. No water. I’ll decide what to do with her later."

"Sabrina, please!" I begged, but the guards had already seized me. Their hands were firm, their grip merciless.

She didn’t turn around. She didn’t look at me again.

She stepped back into the chamber and the Alpha followed her. The door shut behind them.

The guards dragged me through the halls, down endless winding staircases until we reached an underground. Their hands were rough and unkind as they continued to lead me further down. One of them grunted as I stumbled, and the other yanked my arm so hard my shoulder screamed.

"Stop dragging your feet, girl," one of them snapped.

I didn’t respond. My throat burned with unshed sobs, but I wouldn’t cry in front of them. I couldn’t give them the satisfaction.

At the base of the underground, the scent of damp stone grew. The hallway narrowed until the walls nearly brushed my shoulders. And then we stopped in front of a thick iron door, rusted and groaning with age.

The taller guard unlocked it with a heavy iron key. The sound echoed like a death bell.

“Please, let me go.” I begged.

But they only cackled at me.

They shoved me forward. I landed hard on the cave floor, my knees scraping against the sharp rocks.

The holding cell was not a room. It was a pit. An underground cave of moss and stone. Water dripped from above, staining the rock with green veins. The air was cold and foul, thick with mildew and something metallic. Blood, perhaps.

"Enjoy your stay," one of them laughed, slamming the door shut.

The sound of the lock twisting into place sealed my fate.

Darkness swallowed me. My breath hitched. I pressed my back against the damp wall, hugging my arms around myself.

I wondered whether my father knew where I was. And whether he would come get me. I leaned my head against the cold wall and allowed the tears to come.

  • The Alpha’s Unwilling Heir-Bearer   Chapter 63

ELOWYN I remained in the alpha’s embrace until the sun began to go down. The orange light from the setting sun slanted through the tall windows, spilling over the bed and bathing his skin in soft gold. The alpha didn’t let go of me. His arm stayed around my waist, heavy and warm, his breath brushing my neck. He held me like I mattered, like he would never let me go, and kissed me tenderly at intervals. It was the most beautiful time I had ever had with anyone, and one I knew I would never forget. When the alpha slumbered, I stayed awake, drinking him in. My fingers traced the strong line of his jaw, the roughness of faint stubble, stubble, and the fullness of his lips. His eyes were closed and his breathing was slow and even. He looked peaceful, almost gentle, nothing like the fierce man everyone feared outside these walls. He was the most beautiful man alive. The fact that he had gone through everything he had and yet still carried kindness somewhere deep inside him was something I g

ELOWYN Kieran kissed the tip of my nose and moved to my collarbone, sucking hard on the flesh until I let out a helpless whimper, liquid heat gathering at the juncture of my thighs.I must have to now, songbird. He growled as he lowered himself, kissing and voting a path towards my womanhood.I clutched the sheets and let out a loud moan, unable to help myself. The alpha wasted no time in covering my sex with his mouth, flickering his tongue against my quivering flesh.Kieran. I gasped as I began to move my hips against his mouth.Yes, songbird. Fuck my tongue. He says, slipping his tongue into my tight entrance. I arched my hips as intense pleasure ran through me.I had never experienced anything like this. I didn't know that my body could come alive in this manner. I didn't know that I could feel so much pleasure from being touched like this. The alpha's agile tongue remained on my cunt, and I began to move my hips against his strong jaw, already beginning to utter gibberish as lit

CHAPTER SIXTY-ONEBETSYThe smell hit me before I reached the door. Damp stone. Rust. Blood. I had smelled it before, but it never got easier. The guards didn’t look at me as they let me through. They knew why I was here. Everyone did.I stepped into the cell. The light was dim, coming from a torch outside the bars. David was there, sitting on the floor with his back against the wall. His head was bowed. His shirt was torn. Bruises marked his face and neck. Dried blood streaked the corner of his mouth. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. My legs shook as I moved closer. “David,” I whispered. He lifted his head slowly. One eye was swollen shut. The other found me. Even through the pain, there was that same gentle look. “Betsy,” he said, his voice rough.I dropped to my knees beside him. My throat burned. I reached for him, but he flinched when my hand brushed his arm. I pulled back, tears blurring my sight. “They did this to you again,” I said. “They’re not even letting you heal.”He smi

CHAPTER SIXTY SABRINAOwen walked into the room and stopped. His jaw was tight. He did not sit. He did not smile. I felt the muscle at my throat tighten.“Well?” I asked. He bowed once. “The Alpha will not be disturbed,” he said.I heard the words, and something hot rose in my chest. I screamed. The sound left me before I thought about it. It was sharp and raw. I wanted Owen to feel the edge of my anger.“He ordered that no one enter his chambers,” Owen said. He kept his voice low. He did not look away.I stood up so fast the chair hit the floor. “That stupid girl,” I hissed. “She disobeyed me. I told her to stay away. I told her every rule. And she still dares to lie in his bed all morning?”My hands tighten into fists of their own volition. The girl's stubborn foolishness is something I can no longer tolerate. “Kill her,” I said. “The moment you catch her alone, kill her.”Owen did not move. He did not blink. He looked absolutely calm, the sort of calm that belied the rage that bub

CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE ELOWYNThe alpha and I spent the morning in each other’s arms. It felt right. His body was warm against mine, and his steady breathing made me calm.It was the first time in a long while that I felt wanted for who I was. The alpha’s touch was gentle. His hold on me said more than any words could. He wasn’t just seeking warmth or comfort. He was letting me know that I mattered to him.Nothing could spoil that feeling. Not Sabrina’s cruel looks or Owen’s hard glare.I felt like I was on top of the world. Nothing could kill the happiness that flowed through me.Then, a knock sounded on the door, making my heart skip. My body went tense, and I tried to slide out of the alpha’s arms. But Kieran pulled me even closer, his eyes still closed.“Who is there?” the alpha asked when a second knock came. His tone was firm and clear.“It is Owen, Alpha.”I went still. He was really here to drag me out of the alpha’s arms. Sabrina had said that my only duty was to warm the alpha’

CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHTELOWYN"Shhh. You do not have to say anything. I am not sure I want you to. Just sleep beside me; let me feel the warmth of your body and the steadiness of your breath," the alpha said, pulling me closer. His words sank deep inside me. I felt my chest lighten. I pressed closer to him, careful not to brush against the wound on his side. The scent of herbs filled the space between us, soft and clean, reminding me of home.Father had used these herbs so much and so frequently that they'd clung to him, and somehow, they had become ingrained in him. And then, as time had passed, home had begun to smell just like Father too. The perfect mix of herbs. I inhaled more deeply and imagined home. I imagined Father's kind eyes and the constant slump in his shoulder. 8 remembered the way he looked at me, like I was a painful yet beautiful reminder of the woman he had lost. His breath warmed the side of my face. I shut my eyes and let myself drift, listening to the slow rhythm
