Chelsea Wren POV
“Where is he?” I mutter under my breath, my fingers tightening on the skirt of my pure white mate gown.
I stand just inside the doorway of Moonlace Atelier, the heavy fabric weighing on my skin. Five minutes ago, a text lit up my screen. Everett Sloan claimed he couldn't wait another second to see me in the gown, prompting me to rush downstairs without a second thought.
Now, the view through the window shows me exactly why he’s late.
Everett stands with his back to the glass, his lips locked with another woman’s. The female in his arms turns her head just enough to meet my eyes. Cressida Wynn smiles—a slow, sharp curve full of pure triumph.
My knees nearly give out. The gown suddenly feels like a set of heavy chains.
“I can’t believe how stupid I was,” I grit out through clenching teeth.
My half-blood pack sister sent the text. Of course she did. Cressida always needs an audience for her victories. First, she and her mother stole my father Gideon’s affection. Now, she’s taking the male I was supposed to claim under the next full moon.
The phone in my hand vibrates. Cressida’s name flashes on the screen. I answer only because rage demands it.
“Did you see that, dear sister?” Cressida’s voice drips with honey and poison. “Everett has belonged to me the entire time. He will never form the mate bond with you. I won’t allow it. Give him up while you still have a shred of pride left.”
I end the call without a word. Tears blur the street as I walk out into the open air, wrapped in the white gown. Passers-by stare, but I couldn't care less.
The Blackfang Night Den swallows me the moment I push through its heavy doors. I order drink after drink, each one burning a hole through the hollow ache in my chest. The pack members around me blur together. Voices rise and fall in the background. At some point, the room tilts, and I curl up on a low couch, the white gown still wrapped around me like a cruel joke.
Morning light cuts through the den windows when a new call jerks me awake. Everett’s name. I answer on pure reflex.
“Chelsea Wren, where were you?” His voice is laced with thick irritation. “I waited at Moonlace the entire afternoon. If you can't take this mate bond seriously, maybe we should call the whole thing off.”
Cold clarity floods my veins. The mate bond with him is already dead. I hang up, force myself upright, and head for the washroom to splash cold water on my face. The mirror reveals bloodshot eyes and ruined makeup. I pay the den keeper and step out into the hallway.
Two sets of footsteps approach. A tall male moves down the corridor like he owns every inch of it, an aide trailing nervously behind him.
“Alpha, Lord Emeric has ordered that your primary task today is at the Pack Registry with Lady Ottilie Crane. After the official sealing, you are expected to attend the celebration.”
“I have better things to do,” Alastair Crowhurst replies, his voice cold as winter steel.
The aide swallows hard. “I understand, sir, but the pack elder was clear. If Lady Ottilie does not please you, he will keep sending candidates until one does.”
Alastair’s mouth curves into a cold, humorless smile. “Then bring me a different female. Anyone except the ones he’s already forced on me. That will put an end to it.”
The aide nearly trips over his own feet. “Sir, you can’t be serious. A mate bond isn't something to decide in a single day—”
“Do I sound like I’m joking?”
My gaze locks onto the Alpha of Crowhurst Holdings. I saw him once years ago when I was still a junior pack member. Flawless bone structure, a firm mouth, and eyes like deep forest shadows. His tailored black clothes fit him like a second skin. Everything about him radiates raw Alpha dominance—the kind that forces lesser wolves to drop their gaze.
He needs a Luna. I need a weapon sharp enough to destroy both Everett and Cressida.
The realization hits like a full-moon shift.
I step forward before the two males can disappear around the corner.
“Please wait a moment, Alpha Crowhurst.”
Alastair stops and turns. The aide freezes mid-step. Those icy eyes land on me—taking in my wrinkled white gown, messy hair, and the faint scent of last night’s liquor still clinging to my skin.
For one long second, silence hangs heavy between us.
Then Alastair’s voice cuts through the air, low and dangerous. “And who exactly are you supposed to be?”
Chelsea Wren POV“Stay a little longer. The mountain paths are clearer after full dark.”Alastair’s voice cuts through the cool night air outside the restaurant. Chelsea nods. The dinner still sits warm in her stomach. Two hours of easy talk and no sharp edges feel almost unreal. They walk the upper trails in silence broken only by the wind. Stars hang bright above the territory. Chelsea’s wolf stays quiet for the first time in days. Somehow this male she has known less than a full cycle already feels like solid ground.Near ten, the temperature drops. Alastair glances at her bare arms. “Time to head back.”The drive to her pack residence is short. When the vehicle stops, Chelsea opens the door herself.“Thank you for tonight. It was… good.”Alastair rests one arm on the open window, eyes steady on her face. “When do you move into the estate?”“I start packing tonight. Two days if nothing goes wrong.”He holds out his hand. “Phone.”Chelsea hesitates only a second before placing it in
Chelsea Wren POV“Stay with me for a few nights.”Honora Finch plants herself in front of Chelsea at the gates of Wrencrest Media House, arms crossed. Dusk settles over the district.Chelsea shakes her head. “I can handle Cressida. She does not scare me.”Honora’s brow furrows. “That half-blood will not stop. Your pack residence is her territory right now. One call and I am there. Promise me.”“I promise. Go home. I will be fine.”Honora searches her face one last time, then sighs. “All right. Text me when you get in.”They part. Chelsea turns toward the street.A black pack vehicle glides to the curb. The rear door opens. Angus Reid steps out and bows his head.“Luna Crowhurst. The Alpha is waiting.”Chelsea’s steps freeze for half a second. She slides into the back seat. Alastair Crowhurst sits like the vehicle was built around him, dark eyes already on her.The door shuts. The vehicle pulls away.Chelsea glances sideways. “You did not leave after the meeting?”“I waited.” His voice
Chelsea Wren POV“Turn it up. I want to hear every word.”The main screen in Wrencrest Media House floods with the Sloan pack press gathering. Everett Sloan stands at the podium, his voice smooth and practiced.“The male in those photos is me. The female is not a bar girl. She is my private mate. We have kept the relationship quiet until now. I am announcing our mate bond ceremony will take place under the next full moon.”Chelsea’s claws itch under her skin. She hits the power button hard enough to rattle the keyboard. The screen goes black.Around her, the office shifts. Whispers start low, then grow teeth.“I knew my Prince of the Sloan pack would never touch a bar girl.”“Whoever leaked those shots is pure trash.”“I heard Chelsea Wren did it. She wanted her half-blood sister’s male for herself.”“She looks so soft. Turns out she is the worst kind of liar.”Eyes slide toward Chelsea’s desk like blades. Her wolf snarls.Honora Finch is already on her feet. “You know nothing. Shut y
Chelsea Wren POV“Look who finally decided to show her face.”Cressida’s voice floats from the living room the second Chelsea pushes open the door of the pack residence.Gideon Wren sits between Prudence and Cressida like the three of them form a perfect little pack. Laughter still hangs in the air. Chelsea’s wolf bristles hard. She shuts the door and heads straight for the stairs without a word.“Stop right there.” Gideon’s shout cracks across the room.Chelsea turns halfway. “What do you want?”“You vanished all night and stroll in like this house is a hotel. No greeting. No respect. Do you have any love left for your family?”Chelsea’s laugh is pure ice. “Family? My mother is long gone. The male who calls himself my father might as well be dead too.”Gideon slams his palm on the table. “How dare you, ungrateful girl!”Cressida rubs his back with soft, practiced care. “Dad, don’t let her get to you.”Prudence rises, voice dripping false concern. “Chelsea, that is no way to speak to
Chelsea Wren POV“What’s the meaning of this?” Angus Reid steps squarely in front of Alastair, extending an arm to block Chelsea’s path.Chelsea keeps walking. The wrinkled white gown swishes around her legs. She stops only when she is close enough for both males to catch the lingering scent of last night’s drink and pure determination.“I heard you need a Luna,” she says, her voice steady. “I need an Alpha. Looks like we can solve each other’s problems right now.”Angus’s mouth falls open. “Excuse me?”Alastair’s cold gaze travels over her from head to toe. The dress catches his attention first. A flicker of surprise crosses his dark eyes before vanishing entirely.Chelsea forces her spine straight. Inside, her wolf paces restlessly. She refuses to let her nerves show.Alastair’s voice cuts through the silence. “Aren’t you already promised to another male for a mate bond?”“He found someone else. Your aide just said you’re short on options. Put my name down. I cook. I clean. I keep m
