Nolan was quiet for a long moment.

His eyes stayed on her face.

"I'll agree to your terms," he said finally. "With one condition."

Gianna's stomach tightened. "What condition?"

"The divorce." He straightened, hands clasped behind his back. "I'll only approve it if Cyrus tries to endanger your life. A real attempt. Not an accident."

"He pushed me down the stairs." Gianna said.

"You fell." Nolan's tone was firm. "There's a difference."

"He shoved me. I have witnesses –"

Gianna found Evelyn in the hallway."I need you to send this," she said, holding out the sealed letter. "Find a courier. Make sure it gets to my father in Highmoon."Evelyn took the letter carefully. "Of course, Luna. Right away."Gianna nodded and headed to her bathroom. She filled the tub and sank into the water, letting the heat soak into her bones. Then the tears came. She pressed her hands to her face and cried quietly, remembering Cyrus's words from breakfast. You made your father embarrass himself. He went to the King on his knees. For you.It was true. Alexandra had humiliated himself. He'd called in favors and begged. All because she'd decided she loved a man who would never love her back. She stayed in the bath until the water went cold. When she came out wrapped in a towel, Cyrus was sitting on her bed.Gianna stopped."Get out," she said."We need to talk.""We don't. Get out so I can change."Cyrus stood and moved towards her, "I said get out." Gianna stepped back.He ke

Gianna couldn't sleep. She lay in bed staring at the ceiling, her mind replaying the temple room over and over. She couldn't get the way Nolan had looked at her blood before drinking it out of her mind. She closed her eyes but that made it worse because then all she could see was his face. His eyes brighter than they should be. The way he'd pulled her back against his chest and told her to keep his secret. The heat of him through her dress. She sat up, pressing her hands to her face. A soft knock came at the door."Luna?" Evelyn's voice was quiet. "Are you all right? I heard you moving.""I'm fine, Evelyn."The door opened anyway. Evelyn stepped inside holding a candle, her face worried."You don't look fine.""I couldn't sleep. That's all." Gianna forced a smile. "Go back to bed. I'm all right."Evelyn hesitated. "Are you sure?""Yes. Go."Evelyn looked like she wanted to argue but she nodded and left, closing the door quietly behind her.Gianna lay back down. Her pulse was uneven

"I'm not saying he's innocent. I'm saying I can't dissolve a royal marriage over something that could be interpreted as an accident. If he tries to kill you deliberately, I'll end the marriage myself. Until then, you stay his Luna."Gianna wanted to argue. She wanted to scream that Cyrus had meant it, that the hatred in his eyes when he'd pushed her was real. But Nolan's expression said the conversation was ov

Gianna's mind was still spinning when Nolan moved. He stood up and stepped back, putting distance between them. His eyes left her face and dropped to the blood on the floor. He stared at it for a long moment. Then he looked away, jaw tight."If you don't want to do this," he said quietly, "leave."Gianna blinked."I'm not going to beg." His voice was flat. "If you want to walk out of here and pretend you saw nothing, do it now."But he was still looking at the blood. His hands had curled into fists at his sides. He was speaking from pride, the same place that made him refuse to search for his fated mate. The same stubbornness that was going to kill him.Gianna's thoughts shifted. The Moon Goddess had answered her prayer. It was not the way she expected, but answered it all the same. She'd knelt in the temple and begged for freedom, for a way out of her marriage and now here she was, holding the one thing the Lycan King needed to survive. The old Gianna would have agreed immediately.

Nolan's hand closed around her wrist and their eyes met. Gianna went completely still. She could see the blazing anger in her eyes but under it, something else flickered there. Recognition? Confusion? She couldn't name. The moment of silence stretched between them, taut as a wire. Then footsteps echoed down the corridor. "Someone's coming," a voice called from somewhere nearby. "I heard something. Check the restricted halls." It was the temple guards. The tension shattered immediately and Nolan pulled her forward. She stumbled through the doorway and he shut the door behind them, his hand still on her wrist. Gianna's breath came fast. She looked around the room. Symbols were drawn on the floor in white chalk. Complex patterns that spiraled outward from a central circle. Potion bottles lined the edges, dark liquids inside them catching the candlelight. Strange items she didn't recognize were arranged at specific points around the circle – herbs, crystals and a silver blade.

Gianna moved through the corridor on silent feet. The temple's restricted section was darker and narrower than the main hall. Nolan was twenty paces ahead. His hood was still up. He walked quickly despite the unsteadiness she'd noticed earlier. She kept to the shadows, pressing herself against the wall whenever his head turned. This was dangerous. She knew that. If she was caught following the Lycan King through a restricted part of the temple, there would be real consequences. But IsaGianna wouldn't settle. The pull was stronger here, insistent, like her wolf was trying to tell her something she couldn't understand. So she followed. Nolan turned a corner. Gianna counted to three, then followed. The hallway split ahead, left and right. Both directions looked identical. She stopped. Nolan was gone. She listened. Footsteps echoed from somewhere but she couldn't tell which direction. The stone walls made everything bounce. Gianna chose left, following the twisted co
