Violet’s pov

When the guards had mentioned the arrival of the King and Queen, an uneasy feeling clouded my heart. I knew something was up and I was right.

Someone was getting married.

That night,

I remained silent, adjusting the hem of my gown, forcing myself to blend into the background but no matter how I tried, I was still the oddball of the Blue Moon pack.

Servants whispered amongst themselves, anticipating the arrival of the Alpha, King Logan mentioned was visiting. I didn't catch his name when it was said. I was busy biting down on my lip as Mira crunched her boot on my leg, an old habit she would never grow out of.

Guests from all over the place gathered at the entrance, their faces glowing with excitement.

Mira stood at the forefront of the podium, beaming with pride as her parents, the Alpha King and Queen, raised their hands to silence the murmurs.

His Majesty, Lord Alpha Logan spoke in an authoritative voice. “Alas! The Moon Goddess has blessed us!”

I nearly scoffed. But when I felt eyes on me, I forced a laugh and even whooped with the rest of the room.

“Our daughter, Mira,” Alpha Logan continued. “has been chosen as the mate of Alpha Xaden.”

A round of applause rippled through the crowd. Mira herself smiled triumphantly.

My stomach twisted at the sheer glee in her expression. As the Handmaid, I had no business caring about matters like that but I couldn't help but pity this Alpha Xaden. Of all the people he chose to spend the rest of his life with, it was Mira. I made a silent prayer for him and watched with the rest of the crowd.

“His lordship will arrive in a few hours. Let us prepare for his coming!” The King announced.

And by “let's”, he meant me. After all, it was my duty to make sure everything around the packhouse was in perfect condition.

As soon as the sun went down, the sound of horses and carriage wheels filled the courtyard.

“His Lordship has arrived!” The Herald announced and everyone bowed their heads including me.

“Alpha Xaden, welcome to the Blue Moon pack.” Lord Logan went to greet the Alpha.

“Thank you, Your Majesty.” Alpha Xaden replied.

That voice…

“You look like you've been through hell.”

It was the same voice!

My breath hitched and I forced my gaze up.

My eyes fell on him and my jaws dropped to the floor.

He was taller than I remembered. His dark hair tousled by the wind, his piercing golden eyes scanning the crowd with the weight of a king. This man exuded raw power, his intense aura dominating everyone in the courtyard.

Those narrowed stares were enough to make one shiver but that didn't make my heart hammer against my ribcage.

It was the necklace around his neck — The same silver chain I had seen on the man that saved me from the cannibals and the tattoo on his arms … They were the same inscriptions I had traced with my fingers the night before when I had surrendered myself to a stranger.

No.

Oh, hell no!

A sharp gasp escaped my lips and I clamped my hand over my mouth.

He wasn't …

He couldn't be…

It was impossible!

There was no way. I told myself that lie but the truth was as clear as day in front of me and it was standing right before me.

Alpha Xaden was the man I had slept with.

Panic clawed at my throat and I took a step back, desperate to disappear, desperate to hide myself before he would notice me but he was quick to find me.

His golden gaze caught mine and I nearly screamed.

Something flickered in his eyes, recognition followed by surprise and something unreadable.

He took a step forward and I quickly bowed my head, hoping he'd dismiss me like any other servant.

I prayed Mira wouldn't notice the way his gaze lingered on me.

My prayer was answered. He walked past me without sparing me another glance.

After that meeting, I didn't know what any reasonable person would do,  so I made myself disappear for the rest of the day.

I made sure I avoided Alpha Xaden but every time I tried to go away, Mira kept summoning me as though to humiliate me. And each time I served her, Xaden kept staring at me, watching my every move like a hawk.

The drama went on till evening. The tension snapped in the middle of dinner.

And it began with Mira.

“Violet!” She said my name like a curse and as the humble maid I was, I came running.

“Yes, Your Highness?” I said when I reached her.

I felt Xaden's gaze on me and quickly bowed my head.

Mira snapped. “Oh don't just stand there! Refill my cup!”

She lifted her goblet, acting like she didn't care. She knew exactly what she was doing.

My cheeks burnt red in embarrassment as I reached for the wine pitcher. Before I could pour, a deep, commanding voice shattered the moment.

“That's enough!”

I stilled.

What was…

It was Alpha Xaden.

Mira turned to him, blinking in confusion. “My Lord, what's wrong?”

Xaden didn't even look her way. His golden eyes were on me. And then in a voice that sent a shiver down my spine, he spoke.

“This charade cannot go on any longer!”

“What?” Mira panicked, her voice, low and hesitant for the first time in her life.

He turned to Mira and hissed in an annoyed tone. “I reject you as my mate, Mira.”

Gasps traveled around the room. Even I gasped.

Mira shot to her feet even though her parents did the same.

“What?!” Lady Madeline spoke for the first time that night.

Xaden ignored her too and stepped forward till he stopped right in front of me.

His hand reached out for mine in a soft grip. His touch sent a jolt through my body. At that moment, I couldn't think. I couldn't even breathe.

Xaden took the pitcher from my hand and he set it down on the dinner table.

Then his finger tightened around mine and he faced the room. “My mate is right here.”

Mira made a strangled noise, her face twisting in rage. “What?!”

Xaden brought our linked hands to his lips and gave mine a kiss. “Violet is the one the Moon Goddess chose for me.”

My brain screamed at me. What the hell was going on here?

The world tilted.

Someone help me!

Mira began to panic. “You're lying! You're - - Xaden, she's just a servant! She’s - -”

“My mate!” Xaden completed the sentence, cutting off her.

“What?”

When he was done, he didn't stay to argue.

With one last lingering look at me and released my hand and walked away.

His absence left the room in absolute silence. His final words echoed in my mind making my heart flutter uncomfortably. I was the only one that heard it. No one else had.

It wasn't a warning or a threat but it was a message and I knew he wasn't bluffing when he told me that :

“I am coming for you soon.”

Violet's pov"Who's there?" I heard someone calling out from somewhere inside the cottage.Definitely a lady's voice.I panicked. My chest pounded in fright.Who?Could it be his mother? I wondered.A thief? My body jolted forward at the sudden realization of who the lady could be.His mistress?I bit my lips in anger, almost drawing blood. "His mate indeed." I scoffed."Who's there?" I heard her call out again.Swiping angrily at the tears that trickled down my face, I fought the urge to crumple at the exhaustion that hits my body.Everything had been a lie.I was a fool for beginning to think I was something. For starting to open up and believe Xaden.I beat my chest, trying to still the pains that groped me. Mira's voice echoed in my head.Nothing.I was nothing. I reminded myself. Now I know why he doesn't let anyone go through this place and why he likes to soothe himself here.I turned to leave, but my legs pulled me across the room. I stopped in front of a door and deliberated

Violet's povMy curiosity has been piqued. I was restless. I sensed that wherever that path led would open up something unbearable. Still, I needed to know. It was as though something from within me had been rattled.I stayed awake all through the night. My mind kept wandering like it was lost. I turned on my bed all through, trying to figure out possible reasons why that path in the garden had been excluded from my tour.Shortly, it was dawn. Just as my eyes were about drooping closed, my door squeaked open and Danya walked in with several other servants. Some servants carried in a large basin with a gold-like signet on it, a few carried in jars of perfumes. However, what caught my eyes was the beautiful emerald gown Danya carried. Fascinated by the rich color of the beautiful gown, Danya walked towards me with a wide smile."My lady, did you sleep well?" She queried. Her smile crumbled underneath her face when she saw the dark circles beneath my eyes and my tired face."I think not

The castle was quiet in the morning, not like the packhouse had been. There were no shouted orders. No crashing footsteps. No Mira. Just birdsong from the open window, the slow creak of trees swaying outside, and the soft scrape of a tray being set down beside my bed.I blinked myself awake to find a girl with short, dark curls pulling the curtains back. She was trying her very best to be quiet, probably because she didn't want me to wake up. Her eyes met mine for only a second before she looked away. I just hope I didn't frightened her.“Sorry,” she mumbled. “Didn’t mean to wake you.”“You didn’t wake me,” I said, my voice rough from being quiet for a long time. “It’s fine.”She nodded once and turned back toward the tray. “I brought breakfast. The Alpha said you might not be used to eating at dining yet. He said to make sure it was something soft, I hope you like it?.”I sat up slowly. “Yes I do, everything looks nice. Also you don’t have to call him that around me.”Her lips twitc

The stairs were too soft.I know that sounds dumb since they were made of stone, something hard. But they were smooth in a way that made me walk slower. Like they were used to carrying people who mattered, people who were royals. Not girls with bruises under their sleeves and dried blood behind their ears.I kept my eyes on the floor, one hand on the rail as I made my way down. My legs were still sore. My wrist still stung. I kept expecting to feel pain when I stepped down, but the ache was dull now. Manageable. I’ve felt worse. And it scared me how easy it was to forget how much worse it had been.At the bottom of the stairs, Xaden was waiting. He didn’t say anything at first. Just looked up as I appeared, arms loosely folded, leaning back like he’d been there a while and didn’t mind. His eyes moved over me, once. Not in a creepy way. Not like I was something on display. More like he was making sure I hadn’t cracked somewhere while no one was looking. No one has looked at me with so

  • The Alpha’s chosen one    CHAPTER SIX

My eyes opened, slow.First thing I noticed wasn’t the bed, or the light. It was the quiet. Not total silence. Just… quiet. Like a place that had always been loud decided to just stop. No yelling. No boots slamming the floor. No Mira screaming my name from across the hall, or that awful sound of the whip cracking through the air.Just the soft flap of curtains moving with the breeze… and the gentle, steady crackle of a fire.Safe.It felt safe.Which honestly made me more nervous than anything.I sat up too fast and instantly regretted it. My whole body shouted back at me—joints tight, ribs sore, like I’d been run over and barely stitched back together. For a second, panic rushed in. Like maybe I’d wake up back in the packhouse and none of this was real. But the memories came fast and heavy. This wasn’t the packhouse. The bed was soft. Too soft. Layers of feathers, not the usual lump of old blankets and straw. The sheets felt smooth, kind of cold against my skin. Silk, maybe? My hand

  • The Alpha’s chosen one    CHAPTER FIVE

Violet's povJust as I had prayed everyday for someone to rescue me from this wretched place, Xaden appeared, helping me escape the horrors that had held me for what felt like eternity, and I will be forever grateful to him for saving him from that nightmare. But…I didn't ask to be reached from one nightmare only to enter another. Our journey to the Winter pack, Xaden's pack stretched on for weeks. It felt like an eternity, moving through endless forests, towering mountains of his bone-chilling territory. The cold was insane and the fact that he didn't flinch once made it even more insane. He noticed me flinch and wrapped his coat over mine. “Here.”“But aren't you…” my words froze on my tongue when he planted a kiss on my lips. “I'm fine,” he smiled. “Besides, the cold never bothered me anyways.”My cheeks tinted pink and I turned my gaze ahead. Light laugh spilled out of Xaden's lips as he rode behind me.With one hand, he pulled my body closer, making my back press against hi
