FAZER LOGINClara’s POV
Professor Vance talked like he had somewhere else to be.
I hammered away at my keyboard, trying to catch every word while also completely against my own will sneaking glances at him every few sentences. He paced the front of the room with his sleeves rolled to the forearm, dark hair a little too long to be tidy, and a jaw that looked like it had been carved specifically to make undergrads lose their train of thought. If Blackridge had a mascot for "walking Greek statue," it was him.
I hadn't picked this school for the faculty. That was just a very nice bonus I hadn't been expecting. Still, I had a bad feeling I wasn't going to absorb a single fact this semester, which was tragic, honestly, because mythology was the one subject I'd never gotten sick of.
"That's it for today," Professor Vance said, folding his arms and somehow making that look intimidating and unfairly attractive at once. "Don't skip reading chapters two and three, the syllabus has the page numbers."
I finished my last line of notes and looked up to find half the auditorium already funneling toward the exit, while the other half had formed an actual line at the front to introduce themselves. My advisor's voice was in my head, telling me it never hurt to put a face to a name early in the semester. I'd told her flatly that I wasn't the type. But he kept catching my eye through the entire lecture, and now I couldn't stop thinking about how I'd basically launched myself and my books at him that morning without so much as an apology.
I didn't plan to go up there. I told myself I wasn't going to. And yet somehow I found myself hanging back, letting every single person cut in front of me, stomach twisting tighter with each one that left.
Then the last student said her goodbyes and walked out, and it was just me. Just me and a man who had no business looking like that while explaining Homeric epithets.
He glanced up, hazel eyes catching mine, and something in his expression eased into a small smile. "Hi."
"Hi I'm Rue."
I rocked back on my heels, mentally scrambling for literally anything to say next. I hadn't rehearsed this. If I'd planned it, I would've stood in front of my dorm mirror running through it a dozen times until I didn't sound like an idiot.
"I wanted to, um"
He leaned back against the edge of his desk, hands sliding into his pockets, mouth curving. "Rue," he repeated, and the way my name sounded coming out of him did something entirely unreasonable to my pulse.
Heat crawled up my neck. My heart tripped over itself.
"Rue," I echoed back, like a complete fool, too busy being derailed by how good-looking my professor was to form an actual sentence.
He had to be pushing forty, at least a few threads of gray woven through the stubble along his jaw, faint lines carved between his brows like he thought too hard, too often. And here I was, barely out of high school, mostly on this campus because it was three states away from everything I'd been trying to outrun.
"Sorry," I blurted, cheeks burning. "I just wanted to say I'm really looking forward to this class. I've been into mythology since I was basically a little kid, so. Yeah. Excited for the semester." His attention was steady on me in a way that made my skin feel too warm, so I dropped my gaze to my sneakers and hitched my bag higher on my shoulder. "I should probably head out"
"What's your favorite?" he cut in, pushing off the desk and closing some of the distance between us.
The air caught somewhere in my chest. My heart was doing something reckless.
"My favorite?" My voice came out barely above a whisper, mostly because of how close he'd gotten.
"Favorite myth. Favorite god, if you've got one."
"Oh um. Hades isn't exactly my favorite, but I've read his stories more times than I can count."
"Any reason why?"
My cheeks were on fire at this point. I shifted my weight and fought the urge to look up into those eyes, like they might actually see straight through whatever answer I gave. I lost that fight almost immediately, and once I was looking, I couldn't make myself stop. The space between us had gone thin and charged, and I didn't move back. I didn't want to.
"I don't really know," I admitted quietly.
He tilted his head, one dark brow lifting, a smirk tugging at his mouth. "You've got the whole semester to figure it out. People don't gravitate toward a story for no reason." He raised his hand slightly, like he might tuck the loose strand of hair by my face back but stopped himself halfway and dragged his fingers along his jaw instead.
"What's yours?" I asked. "Favorite story."
A beat passed before another smile broke across his face, the kind that could probably get a person into real trouble. "You'll figure that out too. Eventually."
Hearing him say my name earlier had left a low hum under my skin, and hearing this now didn't help. "Right, well" I glanced down, willing the feeling to settle. "Sorry again for running into you. I'll actually watch where I'm going tomorrow."
"Bright and early," he said.
"Bright and early," I repeated, and with one last smile I couldn't quite control, face still blazing, I turned and made my way back up the auditorium steps, careful this time not to trip over my own feet.
"Pull it together, Rue," I muttered to myself the second I hit the hallway.
He was my professor. It was literally the first day of school.
This was a terrible, terrible idea.
Clara’s POVThe library held thousands of books, and not one of them helped in the slightest.I shoved another volume back onto the shelf, hoping I had returned it to the correct spot so others could find it, then pulled out the next mythology text and quickly scanned the blurb for anything useful. When that book failed too I set it back and yawned.I had not slept.Since nine o’clock last night I had paced my tiny dorm room, replaying every second and wondering what I had done wrong. What had shifted in those few moments? At first Professor Vance had been so determined to please me, and then, right when I was about to finish, he ordered me to leave and not look back.Maybe he finally understood what he was doing.Maybe he realized he had crossed a line by touching a student.Maybe hegah, I did not know. I could not make sense of it at all. He had been so possessive, so hungry, so dominant last night when he lifted me onto his desk, tore off my panties, and claimed my pussy as his.Wh
Lucan's POVClara lay stretched across my desk, right on the edge of climax, her body rigid and her eyes squeezed shut. I stopped just before she finished, sensing my wolf about to seize control. If I heard that pretty mouth cry my name while her legs shook around my shoulders, fuck, I would lose everything.I would shift into my beast right here, right now, in front of a human.“More,” Clara whispered, her voice rough.Hell, I wanted to force my name from her lips so badly it physically hurt to pull back.“Clara, you have to leave,” I said, staring down at the wooden floor between her thighs. No matter how much I craved it, I could not look up into her pleading eyes or listen to those soft moans any longer. I was seconds from shifting with students still roaming the halls and Clara right here with me.She propped herself up on her forearms. “Is something wrong"“Now, Clara. Get out.” I stood quickly and turned my back so she would not see the canines in my mouth or the gold in my eye
Clara’s POVTwo hours later I stood outside Professor Vance’s office door with my stomach in knots and The Red Hammer pressed tight against my chest. Earlier I had lied to Professor Vance. I had not had class; I had gone straight back to my dorm, showered, shaved, and maybe… tried to invent some excuse for having sat in his office with the door closed.I did not think he believed I had only been there to talk.Office hours were meant for exactly that, and for some reason I had chosen to arrive about two minutes before they were scheduled to end. I told myself I simply did not know what to say and wanted the meeting to be short. But the real reason I showed up right before Lucan Vance finished his hours was that I did not want him focused on anyone else while I was there. I wanted his attention. I wanted him more than I should admit.Deciding I would never invent a perfect excuse, I stepped into his office. A girl from my class sat at his desk, brows furrowed, our textbook open in fron
Lucan's POVBefore I headed out for my run, I spotted Clara sitting on the grass in front of the classics building. It almost felt like she was waiting for me to step outside and notice her. At least that was what I told myself, though I still could not quite read her. I did not know yet whether this pull between us went both ways. But when I finally walked into the sunlight, she was nowhere in sight. Jasmine occupied her usual spot, smiling up at me the way she had ever since she turned eighteen a few months earlier. I did not know how she had driven Clara away, yet I could not stop myself from finding out.“Hi, Alpha,” Jasmine said, rolling onto her back and propping herself up on her forearms as I drew closer.I let out a low growl. “It is Professor Vance here, Jasmine. You know that.”She dipped her head. “Sorry, Professor Vance. What are you doing out here? Levi mentioned that you never run around the campus.”Instead of playing along, I went straight to the point. My wolf needed
Clara’s POV The grass still held the heat of the afternoon when Jasmine flopped onto her stomach beside me, phone already glowing in her hands. Her textbooks sat in a neat, untouched stack like props. “So,” she said, eyes still on the screen, “how was the god’s lecture?” I turned another page of the novel I’d been glued to since I left his classroom. Three hundred pages of dense theory and I couldn’t put the damn thing down. Half of me hoped he’d notice it tucked under my arm tomorrow. The other half knew I was being ridiculous. “Fine,” I said. She finally looked up and wiggled her brows. “Just fine? Girl, the man looks like he was carved out of something illegal. Don’t tell me you sat there taking notes like a model student.” I hadn’t. Not really. I’d spent most of the hour watching the way his throat moved when he swallowed, the way his sleeves were rolled just high enough to show the veins in his forearms. And then I’d opened my mouth and asked about extra credit in a
Lucan’sPOV"As promised" I moved down the rows handing out quiz sheets "five questions on last night's reading. Anyone who added the class late, you'll make it up during office hours."A round of groans swept the auditorium before the room settled into that particular hush of pens scratching against paper. Rue tore through her sheet like she'd been waiting all morning for the chance, and something about that made me want to smile despite myself. In all my years standing in front of a classroom, I'd never had a student care about this material the way I did.Now I had one who did. And she also happened to be my mate."Bring them up front when you're finished."Students trickled up one by one to drop off their quizzes, but Rue stayed put at her desk in the front row, clearly finished. I could see the answers filled in, even a short explanation scrawled beside one of them and still she didn't move. Waiting, it seemed, for the room to clear first.Declan was the last one standing, and
