CHARLOTTE

I didn’t breathe.

For a moment or maybe two, the entire world froze around me as my eyes dragged over the blood-red seal on the raven’s letter. My fingers trembled violently as I cracked it open, already knowing it would be bad, already feeling the panic stirring inside my chest like a rising storm.

But nothing prepared me for the words written inside.

“Meet me at the Blood Well, or your mother dies.”

A sharp gasp tore from my throat. My pulse shot so fast it felt like my veins were being ripped apart from the inside.

“Hell, no!.” My voice cracked as the letter slipped from my hand and fluttered to the floor.

I turned sharply toward the hallway.

“Lina!” I called, shouting for the maid who’d been assigned to care for my mother. “Lina! Where are you?!”

An eerie, suffocating silence that pressed on my lungs.

“Lina!” I screamed again, louder, desperate, because she ALWAYS answered on the first call.

I didn’t wait anymore. I didn’t think. I grabbed my sword from the table, the me

  • The Alpha's reborn Luna: His Surrogate mate    Chapter 117

CHARLOTTE One second Rowan was struggling to his knees, blood dripping from his chin as he tried to put himself between me and Emmalaine. The next, Liam was there. His boot slammed into Rowan’s ribs with brutal precision.Rowan flew sideways like a discarded body, crashing into a rock with a sickening crack that made my stomach twist violently. He didn’t even cry out, just a strangled gasp before his body went terrifyingly still.“Stop!” I screamed, my voice ripping out of me.Emmalaine threw her head back and laughed, when she was done she wiped blood from the corner of her mouth with the back of her hand, smearing it across her cheek like war paint as her eyes glittered with sick delight.Liam didn’t look at Rowan again. His attention locked onto me.Before I could scramble backward, his hand was in my hair, fingers fisting painfully at my scalp. He yanked me upright so hard my neck screamed in protest, my feet barely finding the ground as my vision blurred.“Running again?” he ask

CHARLOTTE For half a heartbeat, I didn’t understand what it was. My mind was still trapped in Emmalaine’s raised dagger, in the cold promise burning in her eyes, in the certainty that the next second would be my last. Then her wrist snapped sideways with a vicious cry.The dagger flew from her hand and disappeared into the darkness.I spun around, breath tearing out of my lungs as my gaze followed the direction the arrow had come from.A figure stepped out from between the trees.Tall. Broad-shouldered, and when I looked closely it was Rowan. For a second, my vision blurred, and I thought my mind was breaking, that I was imagining him the way dying people imagine miracles. But then he moved fully into the firelight, and I saw the hard set of his jaw, the fresh scar along his temple, the spear gripped tight in his hands.Relief hit me so hard my knees nearly buckled. I was so happy my uncle was here to save to me from all this. I know Emmalaine had turned into something demonic, but u

CHARLOTTE I was so terrified. My body moved before my mind caught up, stumbling back, my heel catching on a root, my balance tipping. I hit the ground hard, palms scraping against the earth, breath ripping out of my lungs in a sharp gasp.“No… no, you’re dead,” I choked, shaking my head so violently my vision blurred. “I saw when they executed you. I watched—”Emmalaine only tilted her head, smiling with that same cold amusement she used to wear when she slapped me for speaking out of turn. Her eyes glimmered with something worse than hatred.“Execution,” she purred, stepping closer, “is such a flexible thing, Charlotte.”The sound of my name in her mouth made bile rise in my throat.“One simply needs friends in dark places.”I tried to scramble away, but she stepped forward with the slow, confident grace of a predator. She circled me, her steps soft, measured, almost elegant. Her hair spilled over her shoulders, wild from the shift, her skin smeared with dried blood and dirt. She lo

CHARLOTTE Immediately Matilda let go of me I ran into the forest. Branches whipped against my arms as I tore through the trees, each slap of bark stinging my skin. My lungs burned like someone had scraped them raw with hot metal. Every gasp came out jagged, desperate. My feet pounded the forest floor. The cold earth bit into my soles, sending tiny shocks of pain up my legs, every step threatening to fold me in half. But I didn’t stop, I ran like my life depended on it because it did. I ran until I felt my lungs almost giving upBehind me, through the thick night, I heard Matilda’s footsteps as she kept walking towards me calmly.A slow, measured rhythm, as if she were strolling through a garden rather than hunting me like prey. The sound of her steps twisted the fear in my belly tighter and tighter. She was tracking me just the way a predator tracked a wounded animal.A shiver tore through me.I forced myself forward, chest heaving, heart battering against my ribs in a violent, panic

CHARLOTTE “Stop!” I coughed, choking on thick black smoke as the rogue yanked my arm, dragging me across the floor. Heat burt at my back, creeping closer with every breath. The wooden beams above groaned, then split, letting loose a fresh rain of burning embers that scattered across the stone.“Move!” the rogue snarled, his voice hoarse. He wasn’t immune either, his eyes were red, watering, his skin damp with sweat and soot. “The whole damn place is coming down!”Another coughing fit racked my chest. My lungs burned so painfully I thought they were being scraped raw. I twisted, searching through the chaosand I saw Jeffery fighting three warriors who were desperately trying to hold him back. His eyes glowed a fierce, wild gold, his body trembling with the raw urge to shift even though the suppressant powder still clung to him like damnation.“CHARLOTTE!” His voice ripped through the flames, desperate, broken.“I’m here!” I screamed back, reaching for him even as the rogue tugged hard

CHARLOTTE For a moment, all I heard was the ringing in my ears, the echo of Jeffrey’s growl, the scrape of metal against stone, the rasp of my own uneven breathing. Then, slowly, footsteps emerged from the darkness beyond the corridor.Liam slid across the damp floor before the man himself stepped into the rays of the torchlight. He moved with calm arrogance, dusting his hands as though he was arriving at a party rather than a dungeon filled with blood. His lips curled upward into a smile that made my stomach twist painfully. Then he started clapping.Slow, mocking claps that bounced off the stone walls and crawled under my skin.“Little brother,” he drawled, his voice slick with amusement and venom. “Always ruining the fun.”Jeffrey stiffened, muscles coiling, eyes glowing with murderous rage as he shoved the rogue away and pushed to his feet. His chest heaved with every breath, sweat and blood mixed together as they flow down his skin.He didn’t look at Liam.He looked at me. And t
