Chapter 6:THE FIRST MOVE

Lyra stared at Ronan's outstretched hand.

Just hours ago, she had been standing before the Alpha Council, watching her life fall apart.

Now she stood at a crossroads.

One path led back to the pain she knew.

The other led into the unknown.

"What if I refuse?" she asked.

Ronan shrugged.

"Then you walk away."

No threats.

No pressure.

No promises.

Just a choice.

For the first time in days, the decision was hers.

Lyra glanced toward the distant lights of Stormfang territory.

Her former home.

No one had come after her.

Not her parents.

Not her friends.

Not even Kael.

A bitter truth settled in her chest.

There was nothing left for her there.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward.

"I'll come."

A faint smile touched Ronan's lips.

"Good."

Without another word, he turned and disappeared into the forest.

Lyra followed.

Hours passed as they traveled deeper into the mountains.

The air grew colder.

The terrain rougher.

Finally, they emerged from a narrow stone passage.

Lyra stopped dead in her tracks.

A hidden city stretched across a vast valley below.

Thousands of lights glittered beneath the moon.

Stone houses lined winding streets.

Children laughed as they chased each other across bridges.

Merchants packed away goods from late-night stalls.

Families gathered around fires.

It wasn't a rogue camp.

It was a kingdom.

Her kingdom.

Or at least, Ronan's.

"Welcome to Shadow Hollow," he said.

Lyra stared in disbelief.

"This is impossible."

Ronan folded his arms.

"The packs call us monsters because it makes them feel superior."

His gaze swept over the city.

"The truth is much less convenient."

For the first time, Lyra questioned everything she had ever been taught.

These people didn't look like monsters.

They looked like survivors.

Like her.

As they overlooked the city, Ronan's expression suddenly darkened.

"There is something you need to know."

A chill ran down her spine.

"What is it?"

His silver eyes locked onto hers.

"The rejection wasn't the beginning."

Lyra frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Ronan reached into his coat and pulled out a small leather pouch.

From inside, he removed a silver pendant.

Lyra's breath caught.

She recognized it immediately.

It belonged to her.

Or rather...

It had belonged to her.

Years ago.

She had lost it during a training exercise.

"Where did you get that?"

Ronan's jaw tightened.

"Off the body of a man."

Fear crawled into her stomach.

"What man?"

"A hired killer."

The world seemed to tilt.

"What?"

"He was carrying instructions."

Ronan's voice was cold.

"Instructions to watch you."

Her pulse thundered.

"No."

"He wasn't supposed to kill you immediately."

The Rogue King stepped closer.

"He was waiting."

Lyra struggled to breathe.

Waiting for what?

As if reading her thoughts, Ronan answered.

"For the right opportunity."

The realization struck like lightning.

Someone had been watching her.

Following her.

For years.

"Who?"

Ronan's expression hardened.

"We don't know yet."

"But we know this."

His eyes narrowed.

"Someone powerful wanted you gone long before Kael rejected you."

A thousand questions exploded in Lyra's mind.

Why her?

Who would want her dead?

What had she done?

Ronan looked toward the distant mountains.

His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.

"Your rejection."

"Your banishment."

"The attack tonight."

None of those things were random."

A shiver raced through her body.

Because deep down...

She believed him.

And if he was right, then everything she thought she knew about her life was a lie.

Ronan turned toward the city.

"Welcome to the game, Lyra."

She stared at the pendant in her hand.

The moonlight reflected off its silver surface.

A simple piece of jewelry.

Yet somehow it felt like the key to a mystery much larger than herself.

And for the first time since her rejection...

Revenge was no longer the only thing on her mind.

Now she wanted answers.
