THE PAST AT THE DOOR

Elaris's POV

The knock comes again

Neryss eyes me before going to the door

Averic remains where he is beside the low stool, his body tense despite the directions of the healer. I can see the battle to be in control of the situation happen before he remembers that the council does not have the same obedience as it once did.

Neryss only opens the door enough to see who waits.

Caedmon stands at the front.

For several seconds, I simply watch him.

He looks healthy compared to the last time I saw him.

Of course he does.

The essence I gave him years ago had enough effect to pull him from the brink. I remember the healers telling me that his condition had stabilised. That I had been relieved that he lived despite everything I had sacrificed to make it possible.

Now the results of my sacrifice stand outside of my door.

Behind him stand several council warriors in the formal colours of the council.

The sight is enough to understand that this is not some old mate coming to see me privately.

It is an official visit wearing the face of the old wound.

Averic comes to beside Neryss before Caedmon has spoken.

He does not raise his voice.

He does not have to.

"By what authority are you here?"

One of the council escorts answers instead.

"By council instruction. The visit is official and temporary."

Averic's eyes remain fixed on Caedmon.

"Temporary for what purpose?"

The escort only hesitates for an amount of time that makes me notice it.

"Assessment of the outer territory."

Averic's expression does not betray him

"There are warriors stationed throughout the territory. There is no reason that an assessment requires my private residence."

At last, Caedmon speaks.

"The council thought my presence would make the transition easier."

Averic's answer is immediate.

"For whom?"

No one answers.

The question has exposed what everyone knew.

The council may call it an assessment, but

Caedmon has not only come here to inspect roads and patrol routes.

He has come to be seen.

I push myself up off of the cot.

Neryss looks at me as if she expects me to need help

I don't.

My body is still recovering, but the difference made by the essence transfer from Averic is undeniable. My legs hold me. My breath is not shallow. I can stand without gripping the wall.

That alone matters.

There was a time when Caedmon could have seen weakness in me before I even admitted it to myself.

He knew exactly how much essence I had.

How much more he could ask for.

How far I would go.

And he no longer has that knowledge.

I walk only far enough for him to see my frame from the doorway.

I do not come to him.

I do not lower my head.

I do not call him Alpha.

I simply stand.

Caedmon's eyes move to me

For the first time since he has arrived, the official purpose of the visit seems to slide from his mind.

They linger on my stomach.

The pregnancy is impossible to hide now.

I see the recognition before he manages to bury it.

His eyes linger on it a fraction too long.

Perhaps he is remembering the child I once carried.

Perhaps he is remembering the woman who lost that child and kept him alive.

Or perhaps he is calculating something else entirely.

I refuse to guess.

Caedmon studies me as if seeing two versions of the past at once- the woman who stood beside him, and the woman who left his territory carrying another man's child.

The old dynamic tries to return.

For a heartbeat, I remember what it felt like to wait for his approval.

Then the memory passes.

I have spent too long rebuilding myself to allow one look from him to put me back there.

I meet his stare without apology.

Whatever he was expecting to find when he came to this house is not the woman he ordered out

Caedmon turns towards Averic.

Protocol comes first now

"Alpha-"

He pauses

The correction is deliberate

"Former Alpha."

Averic says nothing

Caedmon continues

"The council has asked me to assess the stability of the outer territory while succession remains unsettled."

I almost laugh at the careful choice of his words

Assess.

Stability.

Succession.

Each has been chosen to appear harmless

But the escort behind him makes it clear what the true purpose of the visit is.

Averic's title has barely been stripped, and already Caedmon is being placed where everyone can see him

I say, "If the council wanted an assessment, they could have sent a patrol captain."

Caedmon glance towards me.

"They could have."

The slight emphasis makes my stomach twist

"But they did not."

There it is

Not a confession

Not even an accusation

Just enough truth to make the visit impossible to misunderstand.

Averic remains in the doorway

"You have your answer. The territory can be assessed without entering this house."

Caedmon does not move

Neither does the escort.

A few seconds pass before the doorway turns into a contest of authority

Then one council warrior says, "The escort has permission to remain on the property while the assessment is conducted."

Averic turns his head slightly

"On the property is not the same as inside my home."

Caedmon steps forward

I expect Averic to stop him. Instead, Averic watches.

Caedmon crosses the threshold

The moment his boot touches the floor, something inside of me recoils

Not fear.

Recognition.

This is the same man who once controlled the doorway of his own house and told me I no longer belonged there

Now he has crossed mine without being invited

The difference is, this time I do not feel powerless

I simply feel angry.

Neryss shifts closer to me.

Averic remains between Caedmon and the rest of the room

The house suddenly feels too small for three people carrying this much history

I speak before either man turns it into a contest of authority.

"You are not welcome here."

Caedmon looks at me

I keep my voice even

"You ordered me out of your home once. You do not get to walk into mine now because the council has decided you should."

His expression barely changes

I continue

"The child I carry is not your concern."

His eyes flicker to my stomach again

"And I am not your mate anymore."

The last sentence feels different when I say it aloud

There is no pleading inside it

No question

No hope that he will contradict me

"You discarded me," I say

"Whatever claim you once believed you had over me ended when you made that decision."

Caedmon studies me

I can almost see him searching for the weak point he used to know so well

There isn't one he has access to anymore

I add, "So whatever it is that brought you here, leave the past outside with your horses."

Caedmon does not lose his temper

That would have been easier

Instead, he gives me the same composed expression as he once did in council meetings and pack gatherings

"I did not come here to reopen the past."

"Then you chose an unfortunate house to visit."

A few seconds pass

His eyes pass briefly over Averic

"I came because the council is considering temporary leadership."

Averic's posture changes

Caedmon continues

"My name has been placed among the candidates."

The words are simple

Their meaning is not

I feel something settle inside of me

This is why he came

Not for me

Not because he suddenly regrets what happened

He came because there is a vacant position

Because Averic is no longer Alpha

Because Caedmon has a wolf that can still shift

Because the council is searching for someone who can stand where Averic once stood

I look at Caedmon differently

The man who once depended on my strength may now be preparing to use his own survival as a credential

Averic speaks first

"The council has not chosen anyone."

"No."

Caedmon's answer is calm

"They are considering their options."

His gaze returns to me

I do not move

For one brief instant, I understand the shape of what he wants

He does not need me back

He does not need to apologize

He does not even need me to forgive him

He only needs the council to believe that he represents stability

And my existence complicates that image

The woman he discarded is alive

She is carrying Averic's child

Averic gave up his wolf for that child

And Caedmon's own history with me could become either a political weapon or and an uncomfortable question

Caedmon says quietly, "The pack needs certainty."

I answer, "Then they should stop confusing certainty with obedience."

Neryss goes still behind me

Averic watches me

Caedmon's expression becomes harder to decipher

I do not regret the words

Averic turns towards the council escort

"The council has not appointed an interim Alpha. Until it does, you have no reason to conduct succession business inside this house."

One of the warriors begins to respond, but Averic raises a hand

Not an Alpha's command

A request for silence

"Take your assessment elsewhere."

Caedmon looks between us

"I expected resistance."

"You expected permission," Averic corrects

Caedmon's mouth tightens slightly

"No. I expected reality."

Averic does not move

"You are standing in a house belonging to a woman you once rejected while she was still recovering from saving your life."

Caedmon's gaze shifts towards me

"I remember."

"Then remember enough to leave"

The words are not loud

They do not need to be

Caedmon finally turns towards the doorway

But before he reaches it, he pauses

He looks at me again

This time, his attention does not settle upon my face

It moves to my stomach

I place one hand over the child instinctively

Caedmon notices

Something passes over his face

It is not tenderness

It is not regret

It is recognition

He understands that the woman he once believed would always remain tied to his history has built something beyond him

He also understands that the child is Averic's

That fact carries political weight now

Caedmon says, "You seem very certain that the past is finished."

I answer, "It is finished between us."

He studies me for another second

"Perhaps."

The word irritates me more than an argument would have.

I refuse to give him the reaction

"You should go."

He gives the faintest nod

Then he looks towards Averic

Neither man speaks

Whatever exists between them now is no longer simply friendship, rivalry or old loyalty

It is the beginning of a contest over what happens after the council removes an Alpha

Caedmon reaches the threshold

The escort begins to move with him

For a moment, I think the confrontation is over

Then he pauses

He does not turn entirely around

"The council will decide within the week."

My fingers tighten slightly against my stomach

Caedmon continues

"If they ask me to stand as interim Alpha, I will accept."

Averic's face remains unreadable.

I say nothing

Caedmon's next words are directed towards me

"And I will remember who emptied herself to keep me alive..."

He finally glances over his shoulder

"....and who she chose to stand beside now."

The words strike differently from the accusations of the past

There is no rage in them

Only calculation

He steps outside

The escort follows

Neryss closes the door

The latch settles into place

For several breaths, nobody speaks

I look at Averic

He is no longer Alpha

Caedmon knows it

The council knows it

And now Caedmon has openly placed himself within reach of the position Averic surrendered

The threat is no longer standing outside the territory.

It has a name, a living wolf, council support, and a reason to remember me

And for the first time, I understand that Caedmon may not need to take anything from me directly

If he wins the council's trust, he may gain the power to decide what happens to all of us
