Elaris's POV
I do not answer Averic when he says Caedmon's name
The name settles in some deeper part of me where the conversation itself does not reach
Caedmon
The man I once measured my life around the man who's failing wolf once mattered more to me than my own health, my own body, and eventually the life of the child I had wanted for years The man who woke from the essence transfer alive and looked at me as though my sacrifice had been an offense
I remember his rejection without having to conjure it
I remember walking away from his home believing I had lost everything
Now he has shown up in the council hall immediately following Averic surrendering both his title, and his wolf
That timing is bothersome to me more than the mere name alone
I ask "Why did the council keep him?"
Averic does not pretend to know anything more than what he knows
"They did not tell me"
That answer leaves something to be desired
Caedmon would not remain in a council hall after an emergency session without a reason. Whether he intends to claim the position, use his influence on the council, or simply wait for an opportunity to arise, the space around Averic has already attracted someone willing to fill it, and
this time there is no Alpha wolf standing between Caedmon and that opening
Averic watches me carefully
He does not come closer
He does not remind me that everything will be fine or promise that Caedmon will not hurt us. After everything that happened, I almost appreciate his restraint
He has learned that cannot erase facts
"I know what you are thinking" he says
"No. You know what you hope I am thinking"
His mouth moves slightly with the movement, but there is no argument
I look towards the window instead
The house feels different tonight. Not because the walls have changed, but because I know the protection attached to them has
Averic no longer commands the pack from a position of unquestionable authority
He is still Averic
Still the man who crossed the boundary to save me when Caedmon threw me away
Still the father of the child beneath my hand
But the title that once made everyone obey him, is gone
For the first time, I understand that when he entered this house tonight, he did not come as an Alpha returning from council
He came as a man who had already paid the price
Finally I say what has been forming in my mind
"He will try to take the position."
Averic's expression remains composed
"You think so?"
"I know how Caedmon thinks."
The words leave my mouth before I can soft them
"He has always known how to stand in the space left by another man's failure"
I turn to Averic
"He will not need to defeat you in battle. He only needs enough people to decide that you are no longer capable of leading."
Averic considers that
"He cannot claim the position simply because I lost my wolf."
"No. but he can make other people believe he should."
I remember Caedmon being at his gates after my rejection, already speaking as the laws surrounding our bond belonged to him.
Caedmon has always understood, the power of appearing entitled to something before anyone has officially granted it.
That is what concerns me now
Averic explains what happened after the council session
"They have not named an interim Alpha."
I study him
"Then why was Caedmon still there?"
"I don't know."
He pauses before adding "The council asked him questions about pack readiness."
My stomach tightens
"Readiness?"
Averic gives a small nod
"They are frightened. The pack has and Alpha without a wolf. The council will want someone who can shift, defend the borders, command warriors, and answer challenges."
The words are practical.
That makes them worse
I look down at my hands
"So they are already measuring what you have lost against what someone else can offer."
"They are measuring what the pack needs."
"That is not always different."
Averic does not argue
Outside the wind moves through the trees.
I realize now that Caedmon does not need to accuse Averic of weakness directly. He only needs to stand nearby while everyone else is made aware of the difference
The signal is already there.
A wolf without an Alpha's authority
A council searching for stability
And Caedmon waiting in the room where decisions are made.
The night grows heavier after that
I do not think of Caedmon as the man who once rejected me
Not entirely
I think of what happens when a pack loses the person who has held it together
I have watched it happen before
When Caedmon's health failed, I became the person keeping him alive. No one asked what it cost me because the important thing was that he survived
Now Averic has made a similar decision
Except he did not give his essence to preserve his position
He gave his wolf away knowing what would happen afterwards
For me
For his child
The realization is uncomfortable because gratitude is easier when it stays abstract
This does not
His sacrifice has a face
It is sitting several feet away from me
And Caedmon is waiting somewhere beyond these walls for the weakness that sacrifice created.
I hate that the thought makes me angry
I hate even more that the anger is not directed Averic
I look at Averic properly for the first time since returning from the council
The change is subtle
Anyone who did not know him before might have missed it
I do not
The old force is absent
Not his personality. Not his presence
Something deeper.
There used to be an instinctive command in him, something every wolf in the palace responded to before he even spoke. I had watched warriors straighten when he entered a room. I had watched servants lower their voices around him
That power is no longer there
And yet he sits quietly. Accepting the consequence without pretending it has not happened.
I remember how easily he could have refused the transfer
He could have protected his title
He could have protected his wolf
He could have allowed the council to deal with me instead
He did not
My throat tightens
I look away before he notices too much
I am not ready to call this forgiveness
But I can no longer pretend his sacrifice means nothing to me
The boundary I have kept around myself since his apology begins to change
Not disappear
Change
There is a difference
I still remember being accused
I remember Maevra's death
I remember standing in front of Averic while he told me he could no longer keep me under his roof
I remember leaving with my belongings while carrying his child
Those things do not become smaller because he later discovered the truth
But another truth exists beside them now
When he learned what had happened, he did not protect his title first
He did not bargain with the council
He did not ask what the pack would think before giving me the essence I needed
he gave me his wolf
That decision cannot erase what came before it
But neither can I erase the decision from the story between us
I look at him again
He notices the movement but says nothing
For once, I am grateful he does not force me to explain myself
My eyes fall towards the low stool near the bed
It is the one he used during the transfer
The memory of that night comes back in fragments, the healer's instructions, the pressure in my body, the terrible fear that accepting his essence would destroy the last thing he had left
I speak before I can reconsider
"You should sit."
Averic looks at me
"The healer said you are not to take strain."
His expression only changes slightly
"I am fine."
"That was not what I said"
A pause
Then he sits
It is such a small action that it should mean nothing
It does
Until now, he has remained either at the threshold, or on the far side of every conversation as though he understands that, entering too deeply into my space without permission, would be another kind of pressure
Tonight I gave him permission to cross one small distance
Not into my heart
Not into my forgiveness
Just into the room
And somehow it feels significant
Averic settles onto the stool without trying to fill the room with words
Neryss notices
She quietly moves towards the far side of the house, arranging the few things that do not actually need arranging
She gives us privacy without leaving me alone with him
I appreciate that
Averic looks tired
Not physically weak in the way I was after the transfer, but stripped of the ever readiness that once surrounded him
"You should rest," I tell him
"I wanted to make sure you were all right."
"I am."
His gaze drops briefly towards my stomach
"And the child?"
"Strong."
Something in his posture eases
That answer is enough for him
I realize how strange this is
We are not discussing forgiveness
We are not discussing whether I will return to the palace
We are not even discussing what happens between us
We are simply sitting in the same room without either of us trying to win something from the other.
For the first time since his return, I do not feel as though I need to defend every inch of distance between us
The child moves beneath my palm
A strong, deliberate kick
I glance down, then back at Averic
He notices the movement
Neither of us reach towards it
That restraint matters
I swallow before speaking
"I did not want this price."
Averic remains still
"I still don't want it."
My fingers rest over the place where the child moved
"But I will not pretend I do not see what you have already paid."
The words cost me more than I expected
Not because they are affectionate
They are not
They are simply honest
Averic lowers his eyes
"I know."
I shake my head
“No. You don’t.”
He waits
"I need you to understand something. Seeing what you sacrificed does not erase what happened before it."
"I know."
"And I am not ready to forgive everything."
"I know."
I study him
He does not defend himself
That makes it harder to remain completely closed
"I just..." I stop, searching for words that do not promise more than I can give
"I don't want your sacrifice to become something I refuse to acknowledge simply because I am still hurt."
Averic nods once
"That is enough."
He does not reach for my hand
He does not ask whether he can stay
He does not use the child as an excuse to move closer
Instead, he accepts the small opening exactly as I offered it
That matters
I expected him to seize the moment
He does not
For a man who once had the power to command an entire pack, Averic has become remarkably careful with the few things that cannot be commanded
My trust
My forgiveness
My choice
I look towards the window
"We don't know what Caedmon intends."
"No."
"And if the council gives him an opportunity..."
"I will deal with it."
I glance at him
"With what?"
The question is sharper than I intend
Averic does not look away
"I still know how to fight."
A faint, humorless breath escapes me
"You no longer have your wolf."
"I noticed."
Despite myself, the corner of my mouth almost lifts
It disappears before becoming a smile
But Averic sees it
He does not comment
That restraint makes the moment safer
Then we hear it
Hoofbeats.
Not one horse.
Several.
The sound is approaching along the outer road in a measured rhythm
Not travelers
Not merchants
An official party.
Neryss stops what she is doing
The hoofbeats grow louder
Averic rises instinctively, then pauses when the healer's warning returns to him
He no longer has the strength of his wolf behind that movement
But his body still remembers the being prepared for danger
Neryss crosses to the shuttered window and looks through the narrow gap
For several seconds, she says nothing
Then her shoulders stiffen
I stand despite the sudden unease in my stomach
"Neryss?"
She turns towards us
Her face has lost its color
"Council escort."
Averic moves towards the window
Neryss speaks again, quieter this time
"And Caed mon is with them."
The room changes
The fragile peace we had created, lasts only a few breaths before the past arrives at the door with witnesses, authority, and a reason we have not yet heard.
I place both hands over my stomach
The child shifts beneath them
Outside, the horses stop,
Then someone knocks.
Once
Twice
A third time.
Caedmon has not come alone
And this time he has the council standing behind him.
