Lucy:
Mr. Shaggy shook my hand first, letting me know that he was Liam.
Leon followed suit but followed up with a question.
“You’re the assistant in training my dad was telling us about?” he asks.
His question was laced with doubt, but I didn’t let it show that the words kind of hurt me.Both had looked at the pack mark on my wrist to confirm whatever question they obviously had in their mind.
“The one and only. I will be sure your things arrive in your respective rooms. Alpha Leander is expecting you in his office. Please follow me,” I stated firmly. “We know where his office is; we don’t need you to escort us,” Leon retorted in an irritated voice. “I have no doubt you know your way around the pack house you grew up in Alpha Leon. I am following my orders. I’m sure you can respect that and would have the same expectations of your assistant once you’re running the pack. Now follow me.” I wasn’t going to let my age or size let anyone intimidate me, not even my future Alpha and potential “boss”. Liam chuckled at my response and gave me a smirk and a nod.Damn, they were cute, even Mr. Attitude.
I had an inkling he knew what his father wanted to speak to them about.
Leon seemed without words, so I smiled and turned toward the pack house pacing quickly to Leander's office.
I had expected Leander to assign me another task, but he requested that I stay present. Both of his sons sat down in chairs across from their father, so I took a seat on the couch to the right of his desk.
“Tomorrow, we will be hosting the first of a series of mating galas. You both will be turning 24 soon and the pack will need you to lead with at least one Luna at your side. The Blue Moon Pack and the Silver Moon Pack will be arriving tonight and joining us for the gala tomorrow. I expect both of you to be on your best behavior and mingle with all the unmated she-wolves.” Leander spoke with great authority. He continued to talk, but my brain faded out of the conversation after it sunk in that my father would be arriving here tonight.
My heart started pounding out of control and my vision was quickly blurring. I hadn’t realized that my breathing was out of control until I felt a hand on my shoulder. “Lucy, are you okay?” the voice spoke softly. I blinked my eyes rapidly, trying to control my dizzy vision. “Breathe slowly; it’s okay,” they said reassuringly, rubbing my arm.I started to steady my breathing with my eyes closed.
The numbing feeling in my hands started to fade when I opened my eyes, and Liam's hazel orbs were staring back at my ice-blue eyes.
“Have you always gotten panic attacks?” Liam asked, his eyebrows furrowing together with concern. Panic attacks weren’t common in wolves. It was something I had developed after the physical and sexual abuse.
Of course, I wasn’t going to say that.
“No, I’m sorry I don’t know what came over me. I didn’t sleep well last night is all.” The lies I told were piling up, but I couldn’t help it. “Perhaps all the planning for this gala so soon has taken a toll on you, Lucy. Why don’t you get some rest?” Leander's voice was music to my ears, but I didn’t need rest; I needed a plan.I needed some way of getting out of greeting my father upon his arrival and avoid him at the gala.
Everyone was now staring at me, and I realized Liam's hand was still resting on my arm.I cleared my throat and glanced at my arm.
The sensation of his hand on me and his proximity to my body was making my skin crawl.
I didn’t like to be touched; it was a constant reminder that my body was once used and abused. He quickly pulled his hand back to himself and stood up.
“Thank you, Alpha. Please don’t hesitate to mind-link me if you need anything. I will be in my room,” I said before standing up.Being a part of the pack made communication between us much easier, and I am especially grateful for this right now.
My legs were wobbly as I stood up, making me sigh.“I will walk you to your room,” Liam said, putting his damn hand on my arm again.
What is with this guy? I shook his hand off of me and moved towards the door as he followed behind me. “Thank you, son. Leon, stay. We aren’t finished talking,” Leander said firmly, his voice growing smaller as the door shut behind me and Liam.I looked over at Liam who was now walking next to me.
“So, are you excited to find your mate? Your brother doesn’t look impressed,” I said, trying to avoid the awkward silence. “Yeah, I’m excited but nervous. I hope she isn’t disappointed. Leon is just worried. Beta Seth's mate rejected him. She didn’t want the responsibility of being mated to the Alpha's Beta and had already fallen in love with another wolf who had lost his mate. She ended up choosing the other wolf as her mate and it messed Seth up for years,” Liam explained, his voice growing solemn with each passing word. I had wondered about Seth’s mate since I had never seen him with any female, but I never had the guts to ask him.I was happy I hadn’t asked him after what Liam had shared with me.
Before I could respond to what he had said, he asked me how old I was.“I’m 17. I know I’m still young, but I promise I will make a great assistant. I’m dedicated and I owe your dad everything. You don’t need to worry,” I rush out.
I wanted to prove myself.
My response was probably defensive, but I didn’t want anyone to doubt me.I had only ever known doubt, and I needed my fresh start to be different.

Lucy:I was surprised that none of my mates had interrupted or stopped me. The crowd was silent, but I could feel the warmth from their bodies surrounding me now.Tony is curiously observing me. I can tell that he is unsure about my comment. Maybe it feels more like an accusation for the way that I have now put him on blast."We haven't been completely honest with all of you," I start, now knowing exactly what we need to do to get the Moon Goddess's blessing."Little mate," I hear Leon behind me as he hops down off the stage."There are things at play that could endanger the entire werewolf species," I continued, hearing Liam hop down off the stage and come up on my other side.People were shifting uncomfortably, but thanks to Rosie, the crowd wasn't in full panic mode."We don't know all of the details and that's why we have kept it from you. We haven't wanted to scare anyone when we haven't yet figured out how to stop what's coming, but we can't take over this pack with half-truth
Lucy:I could always sense Silver, especially when it was pure, like the knife that had been switched out.No Alpha ceremony would contain a knife made of Silver. That was obvious. However, I wasn't worried about the Silver itself; my mates are now immune to it, but I was concerned about who switched it, if they were here at this moment, and why.My Alpha gift allows me to sense others' intentions toward me and, most recently, toward my mates as well. This was about the only reason I didn't light that cocky Alpha Rusty on fire earlier.Unfortunately, with the number of people present, it was nearly impossible to gauge what everyone was feeling and their intentions.'It's Silver. It won't hurt you. Whoever did this must not know you are both immune to the Silver,' I link my mates. They don't respond or make any movements that say they've heard me, but I know they have. The crowd grows quiet as Leon picks up the knife, lifting his wrist above the chalice and slicing it in the same spot
Leon:Lucy had been timid in the last 24 hours since everything had happened. If it weren't for the fact that she was so distraught once she returned to the packhouse, I would have been upset with her for leaving herself alone with that stranger. It was clear that there were so many rumors now flying around the pack since our return yesterday. While I trust our warriors, there's no easy way to say that there are a few who love to gossip. It was inevitable to keep it away from everyone."Rusty! Man, leave her alone!" I tease, punching his shoulder."Is she really a witch?" he asks quietly.Lucy's lips purse together as she glares at Rusty with her hands resting aggressively on her hips. Her toe taps violently against the cement as she stares daggers into Alpha Rusty.I was surprised I couldn't feel the steam coming out of her ears."You can wait for Lucy to address everyone. I'm glad you were able to make it," I smile before winking at Lucy."Little mate, this is Alpha Rusty and..." I
Lucy:"Hurry up, darling, we can't be late." That's Sybil. You could say that she is excited for her sons to finally take the lead as Alphas of the Crescent Moon Pack. I can't imagine how proud she must feel of her boys.I had put on the blue dress that Liam had wanted me to wear to the mating ceremony, which we weren't able to have.It was a dark royal blue off-the-shoulder dress that flowed down to my ankles perfectly. The silver-laced edges of the cuffs and ends of the gown made me feel elegant in a way that I hadn't before."Thank you," I murmured as she zipped up the back of my gown."Are you okay?" she asked as we both stood in front of the large mirror in her bathroom. As tradition called for, Sybil and I got ready for the ceremony together. It's a way of symbolizing the power of one being transferred to another, even though we both knew it wouldn't quite be the same.Sybil is not Sybil without her need for tradition—something I loved about her."It's been a day, and we haven't
Lucy:For a brief moment, I thought that my mates were too shocked to move. I know that I was.My heart was beating so heavily against my chest that I thought that my ribs might break and crack into pieces.'Nia?' I'm starting to panic because she typically reacts to intense situations. She always has a gut reaction."Don't worry, she is fine. She just can't speak to you at the moment. You know it's not nice to give others your attention when someone is speaking to you," The man says.I'm too scared to look back at him.I look to my mates for some type of reaction, and it's at this moment that I realize they're frozen in place. Can they see what's happening? Are they frozen in time? A thousand questions running through my mind."What do you want?" I finally gasped for air, realizing that I had been holding my breath that entire time. The air feels disintegrating as I take rapid breaths, trying to fill my lungs back up and devise a plan.He clicks his tongue in my ear, leaning over my s
Lucy:The air was clearer, but the same icy feeling wafted throughout the surroundings as I looked around at the warriors all looking back at me with a puzzled expression."Leon..." I whisper, looking over at him to see what he is thinking. Was I the only one confused?I hop out of Liam's arms and study his face."What are you doing here? How did you get here?" he asks again, as if I didn't hear him the first time.I had. I was simply processing what the hell just happened.Seth is marching around the area, probably looking for Nadia, as Liam waits for me to answer his question."I.. we... Nadia said "he" was here," I mutter, using my fingers to quote the word "he".The way he is looking at me tells me he doesn't understand what I'm referring to. I look over at Leon for help. The loss of memories was now making me question everything I did remember, or at least what I thought I had remembered. What was even real anymore?"What's going on?" I hear Saul's voice in the distance before he
Lucy:The night is as cold as it has been, but the air seems frostier than usual.Something oddly chilling lingers in the air."Lucy," Trish speaks up from behind us."Is the council working for Kragen, or is Kragen working for the council?" I ask no one in particular, but it dawns on me how little it makes sense that the council would be involved in something that would take out their own kind.Unless they didn't know or unless..."They wouldn't let us search Kragen's pack even with substantial evidence that he was involved with your disappearance," Leon says, squeezing my shoulder and confirming that he understood what direction I was coming from."What could Kragen have that the council would-" I start to wonder out loud, but Trish cuts me off mid-thought."LUCY!" Trish shouts, now waving her phone in front of my face, where I can't read or understand a single thing that's on it.I whip the phone out of her hand, moving it a few more inches from my face so I can see the screen clear
LIAM:I couldn't rest. Falling asleep and jolting awake soon after.Over and over until I finally gave up sleep altogether. The warriors were too exhausted to travel back home after an entire day of travel and an attack.Saul had stayed in the tent with Nadia and one of our healers. We had no idea if the attackers had retreated to the nearby camp or where they had gone. They could be planning another attack right now, and we're sitting ducks. This was not at all how I had expected it to go. At some point during all of it, my phone had been lost, dropped out of my pocket, or broken and tossed during transition. I wasn't entirely sure."How is she?" I ask as Demi walks out of Saul's tent.Demi sighs and runs her fingers through her disheveled hair."She's lost a lot of blood. Saul's blood has helped her healing process, but Fae are different from us. We can't just give her our blood to help rejuvenate her own. If we try, it could have the opposite effect and result in her death," Demi s
Liam:"The magic..." Nadia gasps. She's barely hanging on. This is all my fault. Why did she have to come here?"Shh, save your energy. You're going to be okay," I mutter.I wasn't sure how much I believed that.I continue jumping over bushes and maneuvering around trees of all sizes. The arrow is still buried in her chest.I quickly weigh my options as I know every action from this point is detrimental. If I remove it, there could be too much blood loss, but she could have internal bleeding already. The arrow could be doing more damage, especially with the way she's bouncing around in my arms."Fuck," I mutter, looking down at her again."Keep your eyes open!" I say firmly.'It needs to come out,' Bo says as yet another arrow flies past us.If they're not chasing in wolf form, they may not be a werewolf. I could use this to my advantage. The forest in front of us is growing thicker with brush and trees, making it hard to move through, but it could be useful.I swing around a line of
