Being The Suspect

I guess my nagging took Cassie by surprise. It also caught the attention of the other wolves.

Then I heard the girl who had brought the news say, "Omegas might be low in rank, but they are still considered better than those without any rank. Talk more of an ugly, terribly scarred, duckling."

"You—" The word slipped out of Cassie's tongue before I could stop her. Surprised at my defiant look, Cassie snorted and lowered her head angrily.

I turned to look at the girl and smirked amidst the mud which had stiffened my face. "Omegas like you only know how to look down on the pack members. If we don't give you the fear you want, that makes you like us."

I had a lot of things in my head so I didn't bother to listen to whatever she had to say or the surprised gasp that rang out of everyone's lips.

I walked into the house and slammed the door shut. When I got to my room, I picked up my mask and headed to the bathroom, taking with me a small, rough mirror.

I once again confirmed I was beautiful. My plan to admire myself a bit more was cut short when I heard my mother bade her friends goodnight and the door opening and closing.

I rushed out of the room and put on my mask while I dressed up. Just like I expected, she stopped just outside my door.

"You did say something about leaving my house earlier today. Seeing you back at home gives me the wrong thoughts about you."

"I'm not planning on leaving until I get back my money which you took." I huffed, pulling my top down my head.

When it passed my head, I saw mother staring intently at me. "Where were you last night?"

"I went to cool my head. After the heartbreak I received from you last night, I began to question my existence." I said and stood akimbo. "I only just realized you've actually never cared about me."

Mother didn't say anything for the time being. She just looked silently at me and said. "You mentioned something out of anger last night. About you being a Hybrid."

I stared defiantly at her not uttering a word.

"You're not a hybrid. My mate was a werewolf, so if you're a Hybrid, you better have an explanation for it or I will have the whole pack informed and you know what will happen next."

It didn't sound like a threat, but I could see the smug look in her eyes. It was as if she knew all about this and was hiding something.

"So you're really not my mother then?"

"I birthed you, Ashley. The whole pack can testify to me being pregnant for you."

She left as soon as she finished leaving me deep in thoughts. No matter how I tried to convince myself she was lying, I sighed recalling the various photos in our family catalog.

My father was long dead but he was still a werewolf. With a sigh, I walked out of my room and left the house. I ran into Onniel.

He stopped upon sighting me. We maintained eye contact for a minute before he walked towards me again.

"I'm sorry about your father." I sympathized.

Onniel nodded and said nothing. Seeing he wasn't in the mood to talk, I decided to hasten when I heard his voice.

"I heard you were brought from the forest some minutes ago. By chance, did you happen to see what transpired between my father and the vampire?"

With my back still turned to him, I grimaced. It was one thing that they thought it was the vampire and it was another that the vampire might have seen me. What if he rats me out?

Thinking of it, I felt an incoming headache.

"I saw nothing."

"You had a squabble with your mother last night. I happened to hear it and I also saw you run towards the forest. You being brought back this morning can only mean one thing, you stayed there all night. Now how could you not have seen what transpired or are you—"

"Onniel, I said I saw nothing. Now, I understand that you want vengeance for whoever killed your father but I strongly advise you to head back to your home and prepare for your father's burial." I said.

I expected him to attack me. On the contrary, he nodded obediently. "Ok." And walked past me towards his home.

I looked at his retreating back in surprise. I was about to retreat when I felt a hand touch my shoulder.

Accompanied with the hand was the familiar smell of Jerry. He yanked me around to look at him. Only then did I notice the other two pack warriors behind him.

"We need you to come identify something." He said, his hostile eyes not leaving mine.

As the meek girl that I was, I followed along as he pushed me towards the Alpha's residence.

I knelt down as soon as I came into the presence of Alpha Helter. Maverick stood at his right hand side, while Luna Celeste sat on his left hand.

"Greetings Alpha." I greeted with my head lowered onto the ground.

"Something wicked occured in our pack this morning. I was told you were found within the crime scene. What did you see?" He didn't acknowledge my greeting as he went straight to the point.

"I suggest you tell the truth. The absolute truth because it won't be funny when you're found lying." Maverick butted in.

"I had a fight with my mother last night. Out of rage, I stuffed some things into my bag and took off into the forest. I grew tired along the way and decided to have a small rest, then I drifted into sleep. When I woke up this morning, I decided to wash my face at the nearby stream which was where the pack warriors found me."

As soon as I finished speaking, I heard hurried footsteps. The pack warriors who had gone to confront the vampire stopped in the meeting room.

Cage stepped forward and delivered the news, "When we went there, we found no one. However, there was a note stuck to the door for you, Alpha."

Maverick went forward to take it. When he stood in front of the Alpha, he read out the words on the note. "What happened last night has nothing to do with me. The culprit is in your midst."

As soon as Maverick finished reading, I could feel everyone's eyes fall on me.
